Screenshot star rating

 Got me, might have been a hiccup in the system or some buds all gave out 5 star ratings and that boosted the score.  Who knows.  Lets see what other Mods or Admins have to say.

We can rate screenshots?

No hiccup here...but, after reading that "other family" remark, don't be surprised if the rating starts going down.

The same thing yesterday is happened not only in screenshot section...some uploads are go up 2 and half star in one night

How many times have people bitched about low ratings?

I can't wait for the rating system to be a thing of the past!

I personally think that screenshots shouldn't been able to rate - nor count in the overall download count.
Why download a screenshot?!?!

Whenever I push a screenshot through the mod-queue, I always add the same rating - 2½ stars - despite what it shows.
Because screenshots are just that - screenshots.
Setting up a desktop and pressing the printscreen button requires no skills. Anyone can do that.

Snowy, first let me say that though my opinion differs, I respect yours and your right to it.

I believe the screen shot gallery gives the nonartists a creative outlet too. Not everyone can afford graphics programs nor have they had the training to use them effectively.

They do, however have a love of the GUI software and an eye for esthetics, enthusiasm and a wish to say the sincerest thank you they can, and that's by using the artist's skins in various combinations and with various walls.

They are, it can be argued, SD's most effective advertising..."See what you can do, also?".

Incidentally, I expect you feel the same about the Suites Gallery, even though Philly (for one) has expended a lot of time and effort to synthesize the Themes: All their component parts to make downloading the relevant parts so much easier for those desiring a 'uniform' look to their desktops. Certainly that Community Service and Spirit should be reflected in his ratings, no? Well then, so it should also in the Screenshots Gallery.

You know Snowman I think the general message in your statement is right, anyone can do a screenshot....but in some there  is a lot of skill involved, some people even go as far as designing a wall to go with the skin, plus I don't think it is that easy to get the layout that you want, some people have the eye and some don't, I go about designing my desktops like I would a letterhead logo or a magazine cover, I put a lot of effort into my desktops, really I do, I am a qualified, International diploma'ed Technical Illustrator, I have been a manager of various depts, I have ben a sub contractor for most of my life in the graphic design game, and I know how much time and effort that I put inot my desktops, so yes you are right that just ANYONE can push the button and print a screenshot, but not everyone can go about it in a professional manner, and I see a quite a few who do do this, so I think in that aspect you are wrong....but everyone is entitled to his /her opinion.....and also I think that people got this whole message wrong, I was asking in a celebratory manner, I have never had 5 stars for a screenshot, its the only honor I haven't had in the gallery, so I wasn't bitching or complaining, I was just stunned and couldn't believe it was true, you know so I could phone my Dad and have bragging rights over him Ha Ha Ha Ha,,,that was all I wanted to know...could I celebrate or not, bu6t thanks for your opinion my friend, although I think you arer wrong in the way your mesaage was put across, but again, everyone is entitled to his opinon, and I thank you for yours...bye the Thug

Far as I'm concerned, the screenie gallery and the monthly desktops of the Forums are the heart and soul of this place. The galleries don't allow the social interaction that the monthly desktop thread does...but both have thier place. TLJ, Cp, OnkelTommy, and everyone in the gallery is special to me. I hope it survives because of its importance to SD and the Community.

I wish I had a screenie right now to upload, I'd love to see a !   My desktop for the past couple months has been as scattered as my brain!!! Enjoy all those stars everyone!

Hear, Hear Doc, I also believe that the SS gallery has a special place here, it would be a shame to take it away, but Snowman isn't the only Mod to think that this is a waste of space, but what can you do, they have there right to there opinions, its just a shame they are in a place where they could influence the decision, buts that life I guess, I've learnt the hard way that life isn't fair and sometimes you just have to say...What the F#$#@....and get on with it, I will still be a loyal WC family member either way, I just won't be such a happy family memeber Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha cheers Doc, and thanks for the kind and generous words for the gallery and for us, thank you mate, you rock

While I agree with you both with all my heart about the true hidden contribution that the screen shot gallery gives this site and to it's members, let's not forget the original purpose and current concern of this post.

That was talking about the 'rating' system and nothing more.

I don't see where 'any' mod has said the SS gallery is 'a waste of space'.

Dale, Jr.  put a 'bug' on the mod stealth rock and recorded everything.

Imho the SS gallery is a waste of the moderators time. A forum section for screenshots would be way better.

Well I guess us little screen shooters should be grateful that opinion however humble or narrow-minded as they may appear, doesn't determine these decisions then huh?

Tell you what though.  Off the top of my head and without mentioning any names, I can give you at least 12 Non-skinning Shooters, who can shoot circles around anybody including Skinners.

And I do agree to some extent that some people just change their walls and blinds, then post nine shots in a row.  To me that's damn near spam, it's abuse and I don't like it either.

But there are a few shooters that take great care and pride in presenting the best of the best, sometimes displayed even beyond the original skinner's expectations.

I've heard Skinners say, how in the hell did you do that several times.

So to say that Screen Shots is as easy as hitting the PRT SCR button, yes it is, but not to the ones who take their time to build a great presentation.

Now, go and get 12 heavy big time Skinners and I'll go get my 12 shooters, and let's shoot it out to see who comes out on top!

We'll just see if screen shooting ain't an artform.

IMHO the Screenshot gallery is a necessity. It's the best way to showcase what can been done with the available customization products. I'm not aware of any plans to eliminate the gallery.

The only moderating that's done is to be sure that wallpapers are adaquately covered to protect copyright and for overly risque content. I imagine most mods don't like to have to rate them.

The main complaints (not from just mods) is that they accrue download counts and "compete" with the "real" skins. Also, they used to show up in the "New Uploads" section and could take over the space from real skins. That part has been fixed.

Dumb question --- what does IMHO mean?
