Wizard1956 is NO LONGER MIA!!!!!

Wiz go POOF!!

Wizard 1956 asked me to let everyone know that his PC has bitten the dust. He woke it up from sleep mode, the cursor would not respond. He switched mice, nada. Started up in safe mode, still nothing. Shut down and restarted and now it won't boot at all. Unplugged it for 1 1/2 hours, still nada. Will not boot from any CD/DVD drives. Hard drive indicator flickers once or twice....nada.  Fans run, power light is on.

I believe it is a power supply. It has an awesome 250 watt unit!! And an upgrade graphics card and 2 GB ram.  He just reinstalled.   Bummer......  He is currently unemployed and therefore will not be getting it fixed soon. So he wanted me to let everyone know why he won't be around for a while.

He also say: "Yrag, if you're listening, HELP!!!  I need the Duck!!"

Wiz...I'm rootin' for you! I remember this past summer/fall when he moved back and was trying to get everything set up correctly.

Cp is right....ouch!

I miss you, Wiz! Call if you can.

May the wizard's own good fortune that he bestows upon us all visit him in this time of technical downturn! Good luck, my friend!

Sounds like the bio battery died. With power lights, fans running with HD indicator light blinking even so much so... it seems it will not boot due to no bio being set. Thus I would check the battery and/or try another one. Then check to see if there is power at the four wire connection for the cpu power plug. With other lights showing it kind of says the board is getting power. But then again how much. Be worth a try to have that power supply tested. But I do not think that is at the root of the cause yet.

The other bad part is that the board got a bit too hot and either the cpu is fried or the chipset has done about the same. Check to see if the heat sink for the chipset is getting warm to the touch. If it fried it will more likely not get hot. Cpu is harder to determine without doing other test on the board.

I'd start with that bio battery and then go to check the power supply. From there you can about figure where it is and another thing to see is ... are there any pci slots used by graphics or sound cards. If so remove them and try to reboot. They will short out - but usually cause the power supply to shut down when they do and nothing usually works. Start by unplugging hardware and trying to startup. It could be something simple too like the Hard drive bought it. Even if it did you should be able to disconnect it and see a bio startup. That would be step in a good direction. Check all the hardware one at a time HD, DVD/CD, floppy, and whatever maybe added to it. Next even remove the memory to see if it boots. It will start with no memory and the bio will give you a warning. So that would be great.

Try to figure it better and get back to us here Red Neck! I hope it is something simple. Plus what kind of rig is it?{Specs}

He can't see a Bios screen because the PC won't turn the monitor on.  :|

I see that he upgraded his memory from 512mb to 2GB in February. Did he test his memory? It sounds to me like this could be a case of bad memory.

I gave him the memory from my PC because I upgraded to 4 GB. It was working fine here, and worked there for a few months. But ya never know, it could go bad.

I'm sure you've thought about this but he could drop the old stuff back in and see if it will boot. He could also pull the new video card out and plug into the onboard video and see if it will boot then.

For an old guy his memory seemed ok to me....

Wizard has asked me to thank everyone for their advice and condolences. Especially Yrag, RedneckDude and Doc.  He wants you to know that his PC is DOA in it's present state, but will be undergoing surgery soon and will hopefully come out of recovery in a week or so. If not, he's only a quarter mile away from the cemetery.

OK Red Neck I'm sitting here gripping my chair for some kind of results...

Thanks for the info on that rig. So this is a AMD processor? With an ATI graphics card?

He acn take the graphics card out and use the on board graphics. Plus it will or should start without any memory in it. Start meaning it will show the HP boot bio screen with options to enter the bio settings.

But if that board has a bad cpu or chipset it may not do none of the above. SoI await what Yrag has to find with this.

Like I said I'm gripping my chair arms in haste of some news here!

Well that shoulds bad and good. Least now I can relax a bit. Had me really going there.

Wizard is one of my better friends and I'd of done almost anything to help him out.

Even got an ole HP laptop here with XP Pro on it he could have. Got 1gig of ram and 160 gig HD.

But seems Yrag has it worked out for now. But if things change just send me an email to my address listed here with my profile and I'll see what I can do for him ASAP.

Start by unplugging hardware and trying to startup

After trying everything yrag suggested,we were consigned to repairing it.After cleaning the inside of the case I decided to unplug everything on the mobo and reconnect it. I didn't find anything loose so I suspect this served to reset things and its's all good to go now.

Your advice may have been right on the money,Shelbygt_the_Car! Btw, I think WC is the greatest community on the planet.

LOL....on your new thread I suggested...p.s. maybe it's an intermittant loose connection. Still could be. Happy to have you back! yrag for President.
