You have a connection issue? Tell me!

I see reports of "bad connectivity".  But please understand, when we play the game with people online it works perfectly so we need to try to understand specifically what you're seeing.

So when you say "I can't get into a multiplayer custom game" for instance, what specifically do you mean?

Can you bring up the connectivity dialog? What does it say?

That kind of thing.  The more you tell us, the quicker we can resolve it.

See http://forums.demigodthegame.com/347467 for where we're at.

Thanks!

NAT facilitator errors and people getting dropped (or me) at the loading screen.

Brad,

One of the things I see from time-to-time is that I can get into a game lobby, but I have 0 ping to a player. If this happens, the game cannot launch, since we are not connected to one another, although I am connected to the others, and that player is connected to the others as well. I'm using ImpulseReactorOptions.exe to forward all the proper ports to my local PC (and have used the port checker program from portforward.com to ensure it's working).

I haven't tried it since I played last night, but some games I try to join prompts a message saying "Join attempt failed." I just keep clicking games I'm interested in until I finally get one that lets me connect. Sometimes though, it says "You've be removed (or was it disconnected?) from the NAT facilitator".

I got that last error once mid game and everyone else dropped, though it could of been just me. They were all turned to A.I. I wasn't host.

Situation one:

In a pantheon game. The NAT facilitator finds some players. I can open the "connection info" dialog. I see everyone connecting. Once the game has finished loading for me, I hear the "player has left" message twice or thrice.

Situation two:

In a pantheon game. The NAT facilitator finds some players. I can open the "connection info" dialog. Everyone connects to everyone, except one player who only connects to me. I decide to kick him after due time. I now have a game with all players all connected to each other. The game does not start. I stay at the same screen, nothing else changes.

Here is what i see a lot;

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8778/connectionwindow.jpg

Then when i load in,  Bam,  i'm up against all kinds of bots and no one is there.  IF it isn't me that drops,  the only people to manage to make it in, are the people with the connection info.  the blanks never pass this point, and are replaced with AI.

Here's my thread: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/347417

I'm having the worst kinds of luck

Looks like what happens with me with skirmish.  Bunch of names connecting/connected, bunch that are just blank, and when I'm in game it's just bots, or bots and ~1 person etc.

Sometimes when hosting a custom game my connection window will disappear, after this other people can't connect to the game. I think it means I've been disconnected from the NAT facilitator, but maybe a dialogue box telling me that would help.

I have this issue from time to time as well. I also have open ports and am using the ReactorOptions.exe.

i'm having the same issues as a few peopple are describing. 3 friends and i just played 4 games in a matter of 4.5 hours. the games themselves took about 20 min apiece, but getting us all in the game lobby was a headache. we ended up figuring out that if we just quit the game completey before trying to do anything in the game, it would usually work. sometimes one person would have to quit twice, then they would get in. then at that point i'd open up more slots and let public players in. which took another 20 or so minutes because most people would connect to everyone (according to the connection screen), be in the lobby, yet still have a yellow ping to everyone. kick them, everyone goes back to green, someone else comes in, works fine. but sometimes even then out of the blue someone will just go yellow! one of us who has been connected for 15 minutes. and then we all had to quit the game, relaunch, resetup and try it all again. we all have our ports forwarded, in fact we are all dmz. when it works, we connect to eachother very quickly.

i dunno how you guys are playing perfectly. jump on our vent and play with us tomorrow. you'll witness all kinds of amazing. and by amazing, i mean complete fail trying to get a simple game going. and by complete fail, i mean i think we're to the point where we have edited the picard face palm into the loading png file.

Oh, i've also had multiple instances of someone pinging fine in lobby and then their ping jumps to 500 or so in game. that's.... awesome.

and to be clear, these are all custom games. and i'm seroius about jumping on vent, you can im me if you want the info. we'll be playing tomorrow prob around noonish. playing the enter the lobby game that is.

I had alot of "connection failed" messages today also. The first few times I tried to enter games I connected, then after game went back to lobby and I couldnt find any to get in. I thought it was maybe the game so I restarted the game and still problem.  1 out of 7 attempts worked.

I've had problems where I'll get into the 'connection room'  in skirmish mode, and be able to connect to 1 or 2 players, but the rest of the room will be flooded with people who aren't connected to anyone that we can't seem to kick or anything.  Most of the blocks on the list will be taken up with names that don't have any details listed under them.  In fact, there's this one guy that I've seen the last 3 times I tried to get into a game (several hours apart), but his computer didn't even seem to be trying to connect to anyone any of those times.

Edit: here's a new one, this guy's name is blinking on and off of the connection list continually as if he's leaving the list and then getting added over and over again.  Needless to say, we can't eject him.

Edit2: Here's another one, I was trying to connect to a custom game and got this while trying to connect to the other players:

Yeah, you're welcome to hop on the GamersWithJobs.com ventrilo server, too, we've been trying to host passworded custom games the past couple nights.

Tonight I gave up after several tries. Here's what happened:

First one guy hosted the game. I was able to connect to him, as were several others. One or two of them showed their (100-ish) ping in yellow instead of green, though. Then a couple other people tried connecting, were able to connect to a couple of people in the game according to the connection window. They were unable to connect to everyone though. One of those players got the "disconnected from NAT connection server" error, and another one waited about 5 minutes between tries, but was never able to join.

Then another person hosted the game. This time different people were able to connect. A couple different people were also left out of the game, with the connection never happening. One player was able to connect to the host, but nobody else. A couple of players were connected to the host, but had 0 ping (in red). I was unable to make it into the lobby because my connection never completed with a couple of players. I waited about 5 minutes each time, quit out of the game completely so I'd be logged out of Impulse, then restarted the game and tried to rejoin, with the same result.

The second person re-hosted the game, and once again, a different set of people were able to connect or not connect. It seemed to depend on what order they made it into the lobby. One person was in common with the previous attempt, unable to connect with several others, but this time was not able to make it into the lobby.

I should mention that last night we were able to play a 4v4 game with no problems at all, and it was great. Then we started getting connection issues similar to what I described above. Eventually we were able to form a 2v2 and played that. It's the intermittent nature of the connection problems that is so frustrating. I should point out that the same group regularly plays TF2, and we notice much lower pings in that game than in Demigod. For my part, I'm able to play numerous online p2p games (Sins, Dawn of War, BattleForge, Supreme Commander) with no problems at all.

Send me a message here or drop by the GamersWithJobs.com forum if you want more details. Demigod is a very popular game among these guys, and I'm sure they'd be happy to help out in any way possible.

my problem is the same as Zack52 in both patheon and skirm games i try and join, every now and then i see 4 names everyone has conc to each other then when the game loads i hear "player has left the game" and i am alone vrs bots or 1-3 people on the other team.

had maybe 2 games where i had me and others vrs 1 or AI.

I have unpluged my router and turned my av/win firewall off and the problem is still there.

With everything pluged in i can play dow2 coh etc.. all just fine, no reason why demigod should be having problems.

I think the problem isn't lying with us,  but the people who haven't gone through all the steps.  Some people are probably rocking full-scale-lockdown zonealarm or something...  I check connection info EVERY time now, and when i see that some people are blank, i cancel completely, I don't let the game load me in.

No matter what type of game I play, Skirmish, Custom, Pantheon, I am consistently stuck as being one of the ones in the room that has not connected to anyone. I understand this makes me a "poison pill" player. I've opened all my ports and done all the procedures, I think my particular case is documented, and nothing has worked for me. I'm sort of hoping the changes you guys do in the next few weeks for Eupropean DSL users helps maybe some of us US DSL users that may be experiencing similar problems?

I would note, that at one time earlier in the week, (On Monday), I got into a single match, but that was the only time. This leads me to believe it is POSSIBLE but highly unlikely for me to get into a match currently.

Some of the connectivity issues (all during custom games):

#1

Sometimes 2 people in the game lobby are red 0ms even though if you look under connection info, the two people are both in each other's 'connected to:" list. If they're not connected to each other they are almost always going to be red 0ms, but I've had it happen even when both were 'connected'.

I also noticed that usually when 1 person tries to reconnect to the server due to a red 0 ms person, they'll still stay red 0ms on a second or third attempt to that same person, But I've only seen a small number of rejoins (5 or 6). I can't remember if anyone got non-red by reconnecting.

#2 During matches, I've had about 7 out of 10ish matches have drop-outs (network related, not manual quitting). I've had 0 drop-outs prior to the day 2 patch (day 0 games were all fine once in-game). I know Stardock said the lag timeout tolerance will be addressed soon. But it's not usually 1 person lagging or dropping out, I've seen servers drop half the players at once, and one half of the server still remains connected. It usually happens within 5minutes after starting a game, when demigods are in the level 2-5 range. It's hard to chat with players after the fact, but I know one game 3v3, three players dropped out instantly and me and 2 others still remained in the game. Another 4v4 game today I had everyone drop out from my perspective, and I talked to another guy from that game and he said that on his computer, everyone but him and 1 other teammate dropped out. A third game, I think it was 4v4 and me and 2 others remained in the game, and a second later a message popped up saying I was desynced to one of the remaining players. Although if I was desynced with that person, I'm not sure why that person didn't drop out when the majority did.

#3 random NAT server disconnects while trying to join games or in lobby, can't really provide more info than that. Usually going back to menu and logging back in fixes it and brings back the connection info screen.

#4 There's still some random timeouts for players while waiting in the game-lobby. Usually it's red 0ms related, but not always.

#5 It doesn't seem to be happening anymore, but early day 2 when I had connection info open for a short time, it would usually crash the game in an unhandled exception. I haven't had it happen the last day or two though.

#6 Minor issue, but in custom games list, very occasionally when I select a game and click join, it'll join me to a different game instead. For instance I see player A hosting a game and player B hosting a game. I click to join player B's game, but I end up in player A's instead. It almost seems like the server list doesn't update accordingly the odd time. (I usually notice it when I'm asked for a password even though the game I selected wasn't * marked; it joined me to a different game than the selected one). After joining me to a wrong server, if I instantly click refresh server and after it seems to refresh it'll still join me to a different game than the one I selected. But if I seem to wait about 30 seconds or so afterwards and then refresh the server list finally joins to the properly selected games.

#7 Sometimes there are one-way connections according to connection info when in game-lobby. Eg. I'll be connected to player A under my name, but under player A's connection list, I won't be listed (or vice-versa).

Exactly what Sabbath said, been tring to play with 6 friends 3v3 all our connections have worked a few times, but over all 3 nights maybe 4 games played due to time troubleshooting the same stuff Sabbath described.

I just spent the past hour trying to play and wasn't even able to get in a single god dang game!

When I try Skirmish, it just says it is trying to match me up for a long time.  Once in a blue moon, the status will go blank and the connection info window appears and lists a bunch of names, some of which I am trying to connect to, others I am not trying to connect to (those guys usually are blank in their status).  I connect to the ones I was trying to connect to, then I proceed to sit there with nothing happening.  The ones I didn't connect to are still there and still blank.  After about 5 mins I rage-cancel and try custom.

Got into a custom lobby, was connected to everyone.  While waiting for others to join, some players left.  but I stayed connected to them in my connection window.  wait 5..10...15 minutes for new players.  I find some of them I'm not connected to and never even attempted to connect.  they are not even in my connection window list, yet I still see I am connected to the ppl that left a long time ago.

Because I'm not connected to everyone we cannot start the game (the host gets an error).  So I drop out, logout of my acct, log back in, and rejoin.  I connect to 4 of the 5 other people.  Never even attempted to connect to the 5th.  Again we can't start.  I drop out again.  Now the custom game window gets all laggy...it refreshes then the machine locks up for 100s.  It refreshes, then locks up again.  I desperately click Cancel.  Wait 100s for the button click to register.  Get to the main menu, choose exit game.  Wait 100s then the game quits.

I restart the game and get to the custom game window, wait 100s, list refreshes with no games.  wait 100s.  another empty list.  100s, I hit alt-tab. 100s. game minimizes and I kill it with taskmgr.

So my observations are - I seem to stay connected to players that have left the game.  Game doesn't always try to connect me to players *in* the game.  And at some point things get fubared and I can't talk to the servers anymore.  Before today at least I was able to play a game.  Even with someone from Stardock.  So to go read the latest status and see that "the servers are fixed, things are better" is rather a shock to my system, since things are worse for me.

Edit: Well I just tried again.  Now when I try and login I'm repeatedly told I entered incorrect user/password.  This sucks.  I only have about 5hrs gaming time a week and I'm wasting them.

1)  It takes 5 minutes to get to the pantheon because after I click "internet" the game hangs for 3 minutes everytime i press a button in the menu.   (this is inconsistent, sometimes it's great, sometimes it's really really bad)

2)  It takes forever to find a game, connect to everone, and launch.  Works fine, but takes a really long time.  Like 2 or 3 minutes taring at the "connection information screen."

The server for the games list appears to be offline or something. After completing a custom match I was greeted with the typical game list, which I then saw shrink, from scrollable, to 15 games, to 10, to 5, to 0. I have seen no games in this list for some time, and none of my friends can see these games.

The biggest issue with "connectivity" appears to be a lack of response time from the servers combined with horrible UI Code that does not act in an asynchronous manner.

The user interface should be event driven, receiving events from the game engine through a lua event handler. Right now it appears that the entire games list is populated by an engine side function, which is passed in a meta table to lua. When the engine stalls during the connection negotiation it cannot generate and hand off the table and the entire user interface becomes unresponsive.

Network connectivity, or a lack there of, will cause a person to perceive their game as locked, and to emphasize very heavily that the server is taking a long time to load. If it popped up a nice "loading..." and a user could still see the interface react as normal it wouldn't seem nearly as jarring.

As I listed in another thread in the ideas section, custom game should also have a sub menu and not automatically take you to the game list. A person hosting a custom game does not need to see that list, all you're doing is creating unnecessary traffic.

Just my thoughts. Work or reducing unnecessary traffic and throttling the amount of refreshes a user can perform within a time period and make the UI asynchronous from the network activity. Give users interface feedback on what is occuring, if it's loading, number of games it's received, last time it recieved data, anything to keep them involved.

Well, 45% of the time I get "Join attempt failed".  45% of the time it says "Attempting to join game" and it sits there, and never connects.  Twice I have been able to connect, and both games played through smooth to the end both times.  I have never been able to connect to Parthanon or a quick skirmish, it just sits there forever, the text disaprears usually after a while.

I can play DoW2, WoW, CoH, and Surpreme Commander just fine.  And I don't know if this helps or not, but this all seems SO simular to Surpreme Commander for me when it first came out; could never join a game most the time, but when I finally did, was able to play all the way through.

this doesnt happen all the time but i have noticed at a certain point if 2 people had joined after me they will show up in the lobby and have 0 ping and we wont be connected, if i rejoin i wont be connected to some one else i have to log out and log back in then rejoin and viola it works fine. ports are forwarded etc as i can play fine most the time. would there be some way to implement a "retry" if a person has already joined the lobby but is not connected to some one?

Give users interface feedback on what is occuring, if it's loading, number of games it's received, last time it recieved data, anything to keep them involved.

also the games list auto refreshes very often causing quite a bit of lag and delay in the interface allow an option to disable auto refresh and just use a manual refresh i dont need to refresh every 2 seconds if im waiting for a friend to come online etc
