In my last 1.05 game I had ship range inconsistencies.
A starbase was located in the far right corner off a small map. Without the starbase, my transporters would not reach that sector. However, sometimes (some turns), that sector was marked as "out of range" for my transporters and any attempt to autopilot them to the sector failed with the usual error message.

I have a couple of save games, but the error was intermittent, so it cannot be reproduced consistenly even by reloading the save games. I have tried to find a pattern as to when this happens, but failed. Could it be a rounding issue?

My problem is monitor brightness?? It's fine for everything else. I agree that it's not the only case where the game seems too dark, but other programs aren't affected. It's -~7% in red intensity from factory default.

Bugs:
You cannot make a separate peace with a member of an alliance, because the next turn the civilization you made peace with will turn around and declare war.

This should work one of two ways:
1. Making peace with a member of an alliance should make peace with all members of the alliance
2. If you make peace with a member of an alliance, the peace should hold.

If you want to make it smarter, the supporting allies could direct you to make peace with the civilization that is really at war with you.

The problem.
I was in a lengthy war with the Torians. I had good relations with Alterians and Yor. Then one turn, the Torians made an alliance with Alterians. So I get a message stating the Alterians are joining the Torians. Then I get a message from Yor saying they have an alliance with the Alterians and they are going to war with me also. I made peace with the Torians..WHICH SHOULD make peace with the Alterians and then Yor. But instead next turn, Torians say I am at war with the Alterians their allies and they are going to declare war on me..... Too hard to get out of. You have to make peace with everyone at once or your screwed.

GalCiv does not open at all -> crash immediately.

version. 1.05.71

After update to 1.05.71 Galciv crashed after I tried to create a new game or load old one. I uninstalled it, reinstalled again from CD (ver, 1.0), tested that it worked-> OK, updated it from Stardock central up to 1.05.71 and now it does not open at all....

debug.err file message is following:

---
Debug Message: Game Initialization completed.
Debug Message: Creating cutscene window.
Debug Message: Creating soundtrack handler.
Debug Message: Creating movie handler.
Debug Message: Initialize Game Options.
Debug Message: Create setup screens.
*DEBUG ERROR: *** MWinEditFields::Create - Unable to load sprite book ModAbilities ***
----

before 1.05.71 I didn't have any problems at all. well, except those points etc.

My O/S is XP, videocard NVIDIA GeoForce4 TI 4200, driver version 4.4.0.3

So, how I get my Galciv to version 1.05.71 ? or is there coming another update?

I believe the problem was one of the versions of Stardock Central deleted files upon upgrading GalCiv. The fix is to uninstall GalCiv and reinstall it from scratch. (If you d/l'd it like me, it could take a while! I'd suggest starting it before you go to sleep.)

I just noticed something on 1.05.071: If you give the AI several things in a turn and cause the "Oh thank you more presents." message, your gifts do not actually transfer ownership. It seems that once this message comes up, you have to make an actual trade before you can give the AI anything further.

I have 1.05.071 and mostly everything's good, except that I have no music nor movies. Maybe that's a deliberate thing, but I want my movies and music back

I have experienced some random crashes when using galciv in windowed mode 'galciv.exe w' and SmartException were running in the background every crash. However, I do not know how SmartException is supposed to work.

It opens an empty window and nothing else. Klicking "Submit exception report" does nothing and "Open log directory" opens c:\ root.

Is there a manual of some kind? Or a brief introduction?

I think that the reason that they may be sitting there is because their weren't choosing a new homeworld, so they may have been trying to go home, but getting blocked because you now owned their stars. So I just now put code in the defect function to make sure that they will choose a new homeworld.

CariElf,

I'm having this same problem in all of my games. Can you tell me how to fix this?

Found a bug with a special event that raises planet quality. As some of you may know, there is a chance of finding a small precursor artifact that raises the PQ of all uncolonized planets within two sectors of a system by ~14.

I have a saved game that shows the aftermath of this event (where it happened to all planets within two sectors from "Hestia.) When you open the saved game, you can see a 3x3 zone where the PQ of planets have been boosted. However, the center of effect was supposed to be "Hestia", when Hestia was really found at the top-left corner.

I'd exersize caution on the method used when fixing this bug - correcting the size of the area could unbalance the game. You may wish to correct the center instead, and change the size that gets displayed to the user.

AIL.ST: did you have any cracks or pops or anything like that when the music stopped?

jeblackstar: did you re-install and not install the multimedia?

jelvemark: Open Log directory is supposed to open it to the folder where the GalCiv.exe.Cra file is located.  I'll have to find out what to do to fix that.  But you can do a search for the file and e-mail it to me at [email protected].

philopoemen: until the fix comes out in the next build, which will be the beta of the expansion pack, the only thing that you can really do is either trade for those ships or destroy them with your ships.

In reference to your question to AIL.ST:

When the music stops for me (which it does when playing for hours at a time) cracks and pops still remain.

Hey--I noticed that with a "military" conquest you get a message about the blood of your enemies. I just won a "military" victory in which I fired one shot--at a space shark.

To CariElf,

Hmm, hadn't thought of that, I'll try and fix it and let y'all know if it works

Silly me, that was the problem all along

Probably a design feature (or oversight), but should be reported anyway:

I recently had a 5-way alliance victory with the AI players engaged in a total slugfest. While I appreaciate the united galaxy as a victory condition, it shouldn't be possible to achieve it overnight by signing Alliances with all five races at once.

This, as you know, causes massive complaints about Alliance Victory being dead simple.

To fix this problem, I suggest that a prerequisite for an Alliance would be to declare war on the enemies of the other player, or at least include "Make Peace with" in the terms of the alliance.

This is a known bug that has been reported, and explained, multiple times in this thread. The "fix", until the release of the expansion pack, is don't press that button.

Perhaps an Alliance victory should have a 12-month timer as well?
End of quote

What purpose would that serve? If you suddenly have an alliance with every single race, that qualifies as a victory.

The problem that I reported was that it is too easy to get an alliance with two rivals currently at war with each other. You can stand at the sideline without any worries of being drawn into the conflict - especially if you win that turn.

Right after culturally assimilating the last Altarian planet, I got a message that they had decided to surrender to me. While satisfying, I believe that this was not supposed to happen.

The point is, there'd be twelve months for your allies or your voters to draw you into wars. Plus, relations will have time to deteriorate, so a "bribe them all in one turn" strategy might be less meaningful.

The same thing happened after finishing Excalibur Technology. I saved the savegame. CariElf, you've seen the previous savegame (with the Xeno Propaganda problem). Do you want me to send this one too? I'm playing with version 1.05.071 now.

Just trying to make an already great game even better. ;)

For the Xeno Propaganda/Excalibur tech bug, the last time that happened, it was because they didn't have descriptions.  But I thought that I'd fixed it so that it wouldn't get messed up like that.  Are you getting the message "Tech Excalibur Technology has no description!" in debug.err?
