After having the CTD when trying to start any new games in 1.05, I reinstalled the original version and upgraded to 1.04. This fixed any issues I had....I can always go back to 1.04 but prefer to use the new stuff in 1.05
End of quote

At least you were able to get 1.04 to work. I have no idea why uninstalling and upgrading to 1.04 didn't work for me, and the only other program I have added is SmartException and the only other one I have upgraded is Stardock. Since both of these are presumably running on all of Stardock's computers, I don't get it.

For everyone else that is having the same CTD problem: I thought possibly that it had to do with DirectX, so I downloaded and installed DirectX9a from Microsoft's site (thinking maybe it was slightly newer than the one on the GalCiv CD, and maybe they'd just upgraded devkits at Stardock). This did not fix the problem.

Interesting...

One of the new features in the upgrade seems to be that the program now places "debug.err" on the Desktop when I run gcmenu.exe from the Desktop icon. (I might have debug.err sooner if my desktop weren't so cluttered.)

Here's the contents of the file:

Debug Message: ******* Starting Game Shell *******
Debug Message: Going Fullscreen

and that's it.

I've also found that if I try to run galciv.exe instead of gcmenu.exe, I get an instant crash. So the problem is NOT with gcmenu.exe. When I do this, it dumps debug.err to the GalCiv directory rather thanon the desktop. Here's what *it* contains:

*DEBUG ERROR: *** MWinEditFields::Create - Unable to load sprite book ModAbilities ***

I may be wrong, but it would appear that the problem is related to the loading of sprite book ModAbilities, probably dealing with the failure thereof.

I certainly hope I'm helping. (I'm a bit worried that posting to the bug forum is becoming an addiction to replace the galciv addiction I can't fill...)

'071 - if you resubmit a game (ie one that was valiudly accepted by the metaverse previously), you still get the "submitted successfully" screen. [I see this a s a quirk that we need to know about, not necessarliy as a 'bug' that needs fixing.]

Debug.err is in your GalCiv directory.

There was a problem with SDC earlier this week where it was deleting files when you updated. If you don't have SDC version 1.01a157 build 16, you may need to re-install it.  If your debug.err files is reporting missing files, uninstall and re-install Gal Civ.

Once you get the uncorrupted update to 1.05.071, the governor crash is fixed, there are no scoring or version number issues.

Pozest: hmm...Do you still have the save game? Can you please send it to me at [email protected], with both the .sav file and the corresponding folder?

Bearcave: You mean the planet changes? Probably just the sort needs to be refreshed.

You must be greater than the year 2190 to win cultural victory now.

Nassi: that's a bug with information warfare.

AutoSurvey and AutoAttack only work if there are anomalies visible in the first case, or ships visible in the second.

Some of the governor actions (I'm not sure about swap, but editing the social queue does) require you leaving the screen, or switching modes before applying the changes.

Code Monkey: So you're saying that it's not refreshing the planet list every turn? Or just not that turn when you're manipulating other things?

hkarapuu: Can you send me your playlists so that I can see if there's anything there making the mp3 player choke?

After installing the latest 1.05.69 update, my options say 1.04. Also, when I submitted this last game to the metaverse it has 1.0440 as the version. I've installed every update as they came out. The one right before this, the options said 1.05 and my metaverse score shows 1.05. Any ideas what's up? Do I just need to reinstall

As reported in http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GS&ID=71371, 2 bugs in how eco figures display:

- "Tribute" on EcoStats is in credits, not billions of credits (so my Tribute at 493bc/m, shows as 4,294,967,231)

- even 5 turns later, only the planet where the GSE was built is actually showing the increase in the economy % figure on the Planet Details screens. The others are getting the benefit, but still not showing the bonus correctly. [Note: the planet where it was build showed the increased eco% instantly, but did not update the cashflow figures until the next turn.] In all cases, this is creating a situation where the bonuses shown for the planet were not used in calcuting the figures shown, which I think qualifies as a (cosmetic) bug.

Hey - the Torians just built the Galactic Stock Exchange - I built it about 10 turns ago!

I've got a new one (and easy to reproduce) in 1.05071:

In the report screen you get for the AIs, there's a new button 'total routes', presumably something that will be in the upcoming expansion. Well, don't click it because it will CTD instantly.

If it helps, from Smart Exception:

I have noticed a few bugs / problems. I have installed the v1.05 from Stardock Central. I did get the new govenor screens so I know that I got the upgrade.

#1 - When in the Menu screen at the top it still shows v1.04.

#2 - When viewing the planets tab (planets shown down the right side of the screen) there is a major problem with the refresh of what is being built.

#3 - When I submitted my score to the metaverse it was listed as v1.04. I am playing as Bradley@maple.

#4 - When in the govenor screen, once I had the build order (lower half) full I was no longer able to use the priority sort buttons to move my social builds around.

I had a work around, highlight the social project in the lower screen that you want the new social project to be above then click on the new social project.

#5 - The score I got at the end of the game did not match the one that was posted in the Metaverse. I thought that this was fixed.

Sure, what's your email address? I couldn't see any way to reply directly through the forum?

Oh, a new one. In 1.05.69 I stacked 'terror star' with bunch of rangers with speed 8. For some time the fleet showed correctly movement speed of 1/8, as the terror star slowed the fleet down. However, after 10 or 20 turns this reversed to 8/1 and i was able to move the full 8 units with terror star even after disbanding the fleet. Now, thats a bad ass ship ;).

In general i feel the 1.05.59 is a lot less stable than 1.04.? from the standalone 'bonus pak'.

This one not exactly a bug but here goes anyway. This has been bugging me loads anyway (:(

My request, any chance not to hard code my civilization name with that "The" word? Also, perhaps "Lord" could be left out? My names sound ridiculous with those additions, and currently it takes something out of the Total Gaming Experience. I guess this is also a language issue.

Cheers

Not so new, this one has been around at least since the game came out. No one knows what's causing it, though, so it's still in the game.

@Bradley: if you're getting the 1.04 options under 1.05 you will need to do a total reinstall. I had this problem and according to Brad, who should know :), it's caused by a failure in the dynamically queried list of files/versions you have on your computer. SDC *thinks* it's updated everything but it hasn't, nor will it.

The undead are back:

1.05071, the Altarians, who surrendered their planets to the Torians several turns back, just declared war on me for going to war against their allies, the Torians.

Now that's loyalty, returning from the dead to (not) fight for your friends ;)

#229 by Senator CariElf - 6/13/2003 8:22:03 PM Debug.err is in your GalCiv directory. There was a problem with SDC earlier this week where it was deleting files when you updated. If you don't have SDC version 1.01a157 build 16, you may need to re-install it. If your debug.err files is reporting missing files, uninstall and re-install Gal Civ.

Cari, thank you for the information. I uninstalled/reinstalled and everything works again. (Whew! GC withdrawal is painful!)

I haven't had any problems with clashes under 1.04a.062. However, I have not been able to update to any of the newer versions, 1.05.068 or 1.05.069. Each time, as it downloads "battletransport.shi_", it would display an "Invalid chunk data" error, resulting in "Failed (incorrect file size)". My SDC is 1.01a.175 build 16. Any suggestions?

Roy

Steps I took to finally get 1.05 to work.

1) Ununstall GC.
1.1 Remove all files and folders under the GC install directory except for the saved games etc in the DATA directory.

2) reinstall GC up to 1.04 standalone and check that it works.

3) Updated stardock to the latest build 16 as it will not do so automatically (not for me anyway!).
3.1 A complete reinstall is not necessay. Go to Add remover programs for Stardock and choose repair.
3.2 This will replace all the newer files with the original ones. Choose overwrite all files when prompted to do so.
3.3 Start stardock and it will update to a newer version, but not the latest build.
3.4 Retart stardock again and it will auto update to Build 16.
3.5. Verify it is at build 16 from the help menu, then you can progress to update GC to 1.05 latest build.

That worked for me using windows 2K. The advantage being that a complete reinstall of stardock, and re typing all your personal info etc is not necessary.

P.S. whats the going rate for tech support these days? :)

Undead altarians!
Mid-game, I had almost exterminated the Altarians when there was an event saying they revolted and formed a new empire. I extorted the money they had and they later surrendered to me. Thus altarians were no more.
By 2210, when I decided to finally get rid of the Torians, I was surprised to see a panel, with a tattooed face in it, saying 'You have attacked the Torians, our allies, so regretfully, we declare war blah blah'. I saw a ghost! They were long dead, they shouldn't have been spooking around saying silly messages. I think messages from extinct races shouldn't pop up.

When 2 trade items are obtained on the same turn, the second item is lost and you have to research it all over again.

The 1.05 versions seem pretty bad, yesterday i had the following with latest 1.05.71 version:

1) Planetlist shows outdated info if not viewed when changed (slider change or end turn)!!!

2) Planetlist and research screen often show wrong completion time estimates for one turn after changing soc/mil/research slider even after double refreshed, which cures the first bug.

3) Traded tech is lost if you were researching that tech! No 'new' tech discovered screen for traded techs.

4) 3 times crash to desktop at various points, Terror star with 8/1 speed problem, Lost all icons for newly build ships (but restart cured), undead torians appeared, mp3 music playlists stop once in about 10 minutes until screen with special ingame music comes up, etc. etc.

Needless to say, i'm back to the 1.04 of 'standalone' bonus pak thingy. There should be clear warning available somewhere that the SDC patches are rather experimental. Morale -20%.

Hi, I'm not sure if these are bugs or not All I've been able to update to is the standard 'Bonus' Pack.

a. My scout won't auto explore, (other ships won't sector scan either sometimes)

b. my ship weopen/defence abilities don't seem to improve after substancial millitary research (none of the attribute change?)

c. old conquered races seem to hang around,

d. I can't seem to tech past Alpha Omega stuff (crashes to desktop),

Thanks

On 1.04a.62 I can't select one of my ships if it is stacked on one of my tiny freighters.

I've had an interesting situation that I think is a bug...

My score of 4400 for a tiny challenging game seems too high. As does the trillions of dollars I was getting a turn from the dread lords...

The dreadlords got released from the orb thing and their ships appeared all over.
There world appeared over the altarians. Whiping them out without a word or message.
In the same turn as the appearance I talked to them and declared peace and gave them Aphodisiacs. (Hey, I figured that since they'd been frozen for who knows how long they might need a little pick me up)

Anyway, being the greedy person I am I tried to see if I could get a few creds back from the deal. well. They were willing to let me have about 140 trillion credits per month for 50 months. Needless to say I had some cash pretty fast...

It's a tad annoying as I don't get to play much and this sort of killed the game I'd been playing as I won without effort after that. (Buying Ranger ships 8 per turn...

Interface Issues
----------------

Governor Screen -
When the Social Projects queue fills up (i.e. the space for the listed projects is filled to the point where any further additions will create a scrollbar), it is virtually impossible to change the priority on social projects. Most of the time, you can't - the buttons simply don't work. On the off chance it DOES work, it's completely random - i.e. if you click "Down", you have a better chance of pushing it UP rather than down. What's more, once the list is filled, but NOT to the point of a scrollbar being created, the Priority buttons once again go haywire - "Down" makes it go UP, "Up" usually doesn't work, repeated attempts on both buttons will EVENTUALLY get it to work right, or it may not work at all. And, once that list is filled, you can't move things up or down to/from the bottom of the list. Any attempt at moving something from the bottom of the list UP will not work; likewise for moving ANYTHING in the list DOWN.

Trade Screen -
When attempting to trade Techs, if you have enough available Techs to create a scrollbar in the window, after scrolling to the bottom of the Tech list and adding each of the Techs to the Trade queue (thereby removing them from your Tech slot), the scrollbar does not function anymore. You cannot scroll back up to click on further Techs - it simply does not work. You have to delete ALL the Techs from the Trade queue in order to make the scrollbar return, THEN scroll up from the bottom to a point between the middle and top of the list, so that while you add Techs to the trade queue, it keeps the scrollbar active.

That's all I can remember off-hand, aside from the usual CTD bug concerning the missing file MWIN.cpp. That bug is REALLY annoying, especially when I'm about to win a game. :P Ah well. If I find anything else, I'll add it here (most likely in this post).
