Wyoming Blizzard

I am hauling an airfield snow blower truck out to Salt Lake City. I stopped here in Cheyenne,WY yesterday morning to get some fuel and breakfast. By the time I had finished eating they had closed down the highways due to blizzard conidtions.

As the wind was so extreme I really can't blame them. Even loaded as heavy as I am the wind was pushing my rig around like a toy. A lighter truck would have a lot of trouble staying on the road let alone in their lane. It's a recipe for a major accident.

I had planned on delivering today but called the customer to let them know I wouldn't be there today. She said she understood as she was looking at a blizzard out her window as we were talking. Even if I had made it through WY I would have never made it through the mountains going into UT.

I spent yesterday sitting around knitting and watching the wind blow the snow while it shook the hell out of my truck. I watched a little tv and then late in the day I accidentally wanderied into the saloon next door. I had a pretty good meal in there and a few adult beverages and then returned to my truck for some sleep.

Sleeping was not easy as these high winds kept the truck shaking all night and a couple of times it shook so violently that I was sure someone had hit my truck.

This monring I am having my coffee and keeping an eye on the WYDOT website waiting for them to re-open the highways so I can move on. As long as these high winds are still blowing I am in no hurry. The storm will eventually pass and I can move on safely, but as of now it's showing no sign of letting up.

Hello Mason.  I got cold just reading about the snow and wind you are stuck in.  I have family in Lander and hear a lot of these stories.  As always, glad to hear you are being sensible.  Stay safe out there.  j

Thanks. This sort of thing just goes along with trucking. Not the first time I've had to wait out the weather and I'm sure it won't be the last.

Oh the memories.  I was in the PoE on !25, getting permits for a portable water tank we were moving up to Cheyenne for a jobsite we had up there.  While I was dawdling, waiting for all the typing and stuff to happen, I noticed a picture on the bulletin board.  It was a fence post with a heavy tow chain attached.  The chain was at about a fortyfive degree angle from the post.  The title was "Wyoming Wind Guage:  Conditions : Normal"  The text under the picture described the different conditions based on the angle the chain was from the post.  When the chain was straight out, stay home.

I am a few hundred miles south of you, we got some snow last night but the promise is for a real umdinger of a spring storm tonight through Friday night.  Hope you get out of there before that happens.  Good luck, M.

Thanks. Yeah I know another storm is coming through. I got rolling into Utah this morning and ran smack into another snowstorm, but was out of it again by the time I dropped into SLC.

I've reloaded with a military truck and will head out of here first thing tomorrow morning. It's heading for nice, warm, SC. :D
