So Your 7 Year Old's a Tramp . . .

I don't have a daughter. Evidently God feels I am the sort of mom who needs only rowdy, grimy little boys. No matter what anyone tries to tell you, boys and girls are inherently different. Give boys dolls and they will tear off the arms and use them as guns. This is just the way it is. Give little girls GI Joes, and suddenly Barbie has a new love interest (shhh . . . don't tell Ken!). This is just the way it is.

Some things can't be helped, but some things can. Your second grader does not have to be a slut! This is not just the way it is! There is hope!

Here, from a mom that has never raised a daughter (HA HA!), are some tips for keeping your child from turning into a smoldering pile of 13 year old jail bait!

1. Bikinis are for babies and big girls. Babies can wear frilly little polka dot bikinis and be absolutely precious, but there is a point where the bikini just becomes wrong.

Try this easy rule -- once the baby pot-belly is gone, so is the two piece! Never again do I want to see a 10 year old working it in a string bikini . . . NEVER. Just don't do it, parents.

On the other end of the spectrum, try this other easy bikini rule -- allow her to have a bikini when you put her on birth control . . . not old enough for BC? you don't plan on providing her with contraception? No problem . . . no bikini! Simple, see?

2. Children should NOT wear kneehigh boots. Kaitlyn can't run on the playground in tight, sweaty leather boots. She can't. I promise. I don't care if Julie has a pair. I'm not Julie's mom. The answer is no, and that's final.

If your husband drools when you wear a certain item, that's a good sign that it's something you should never, never dress your kid in. Ever.

3. Midriff baring tops. No. No. No. No. I'm sure your 12 year old has fabulous abs. I'll bet she has a nice belly button, too. We cannot live vicariously through our children, moms. Just because we can no longer pull off those sexy short tops does not mean our children should! Yucky!

4. Miniskirts, and particularly school-girl style miniskirts (and with knee high stockings!) are also bad for your child's non-slutty karma. You know what this type of outfit tells your 9 year old daughter? I'm like Britney Spears. I'm hot. I want to marry someone else's man and then pimp out a new fragrance for $50 a bottle. That's not what you want, is it?

5. Whenever your 3rd grader daughter shows the neighbors her school photos and exclaims, "Look how sexy I look. *giggles* Don't I look sexy in these pictures?" or when the boys in her class are talking about bending her over a desk and taking advantage of her, you have a problem. A big one.

I suggest you stop dressing her like a tramp, stop laughing when she dances like Christina Aguilera, and have daddy put those Girls Gone Wild DVDs up somewhere where the kids can't see them.

Look, there's plenty of time for your daughter to be a slut in college. Let's drop the sexy dancing, the miniskirts and sexy boots for now, and let her go play outside in a pair of shorts (I didn't say Daisy Dukes, either!) and Carebears T-shirt.

Oh, and . . . Brats and Diva Stars are part of the problem, too . . . let her brother tear their heads off and bury their bodies in the backyard, and then never buy anymore ever again.

Having 2 of each, I can tell you that there are indeed differences between the 2. But maybe I was lucky, or just had good children, but I did not have to worry about either of my Daughters being slutty at 7.

Quite the opposite, my youngest refuses to this day to wear dresses unless she is forced to! SHe is very much the tom boy. But she does not like boy things, and stuffed animals are her choice. That and Cats. My oldest daughter is now 21, and she does look pretty in a dress. I miss my little girl!

Boys are easy to take care of until they hit the stupid stage. This is the same time their hormones kick in! Until then, they will break a leg, or dismember a frog, but otherwise, you know what they are up to, even if it is gross!

Having been born male, but having 4 sisters, I was not really surprised by any of them. Each was unique and a joy. Yes, I broke the cardinal rule of never letting children outnumber the parents, but I would not trade any of them for anything.

Yeah, my wife teaches half a day over at the elementary school, and they sent a kindergartener home for wearing a shirt that said "hottie." We have junior high girls that we have to tell weekly to pull their pants up because they want to show off their thongs. It's getting worse and worse. And don't even get me started on those teen/pre-teen "modeling" websites that are really nothing more than soft core kiddy porn.

Hilarious stuff Tex. And yet so true. That is the most disturbing part of all of it.

True story.

I've studied psychology and the nature v. nurture debate and gender roles and all that, and I just totally believe that men and women are made different.

But maybe I was lucky, or just had good children, but I did not have to worry about either of my Daughters being slutty at 7.

I think it's hard in the society we live in. Kids have so much grown up stuff pushed on them.

Quite the opposite, my youngest refuses to this day to wear dresses unless she is forced to! SHe is very much the tom boy. But she does not like boy things, and stuffed animals are her choice. That and Cats.

She sounds like a cutie.

I'll bet you do.

That's the thing . . . girls are sneaky . . . boys are bold. Girls backstab and gossip all year, and boys have a disagreement, duke it out, and then drop it and are friends everafter.

Having been born male, but having 4 sisters, I was not really surprised by any of them. Each was unique and a joy. Yes, I broke the cardinal rule of never letting children outnumber the parents, but I would not trade any of them for anything.

Sounds like you have a wonderful, lively, loving family.

I am incredibly lucky.  I have a 12 year old girl who wouldn't be caught dead in knee high boots, who has refused to wear shorts because they're "too short" and who dragged me around multiple stores this past summer trying to find a one-piece that didn't "show too much".  She will not wear skirts of any kind, and isn't interested in boys or relationships....although she thinks that Orlando Bloom is cute.

I see this phenomenon of little girls dressing inappropriately for their age every day.  I see them trying to be so much older than they are....I hear them talking about boys and pair-bonding at the ripe old age of 10.  There's something seriously wrong with this.....why aren't we encouraging our kids to be just that - kids?

Good points! While I have no human daughters, I will adjust as necessary to keep my girl doggies from becoming little sluts. As it is, Aji wheres pants when she goes into season. And we picked our doggie moomoos out specifically keeping in mind that we didn't want to have them looking all slutty!

If your husband drools when you wear a certain item, that's a good sign that it's something you should never, never dress your kid in. Ever.

An easy way to remember this one - If daddy likes, you won't like it on your daughter...

I see children going to school now, and they wear these tiny little skirts and I just think my god! No wonder there is so much teenage pregnancy! They act like adults, some even look it, but they aren't! They are children, and should be treated like that! They grow up fast enough as it is.....lol...how old do I sound! Great article honey xxx

I see that kind of stuff all the time at my son's school. Good for them for not letting her parents send her to school in that. What kind of message does that send a little girl? *shakes head*

I guess I should be glad I don't have a daughter . . . I remember pushing my parents' limits with clothes, but it was much more innocent than it is now. Scary. People wonder why we have so much teen pregnancy . . . part of it is because we teach our little girls (intentionally or not) that they are first and foremost sex objects, and that they can use their sexual appeal as a tool to get what they want.

And don't even get me started on those teen/pre-teen "modeling" websites that are really nothing more than soft core kiddy porn.

Never heard of those. That sounds awful.

Thanks. I joke (cause I can't help it!) but it's really an awful thing.

Not lucky, dharma . . . your daughter is not modest by accident. IMO, it's a reflection of her good raising.

That's what's so awful. Kids today have the opportunity to live as kids for a huge span of time . . . they don't have to help around the farm or support the family anymore, and at the same time, they are being thrown into a culture of sex and adulthood.

! What a good daddy you are! Slutty dogs are the worst offenders, I think!

Very good . . . that ought to be put on a plaque and sold at home furnishing stores . . .

I think the EXACT same thing, Sally. They are so sexualized, without really have a grasp on it all.

They act like adults, some even look it, but they aren't! They are children, and should be treated like that!

That's the thing to remember. Even though they may look more like an adult, they still have the reasoning of child. We should be protecting them from all this junk, not encouraging it!

Great article honey xxx

Thanks, Sally!

Naughty, history! Isn't it surprising, though, that the boy are so sexualized at that age, as well?

Can I add low-rise jeans to the list? I don't mind women wearing them (I find them to be very comfortable) but there's something disturbing about hearing giggling 11-year-old girls in the department store talking about which pair has a smaller zip fly.... I suppose they go with the bare midriffs, though. (The HR person where I was just hired was informing me of the dress code and apparently midriffs are out for conservative adults in the editing world, too. Darn.) Thank god for winter.

Most definitely.

The sad thing is, kids have such limited choices because most of the clothes made for little girls are designed in this trampy, pseudo-adult way. Yuck.

he he he . . . now one would think a bare midriff would be helpful to the professional image. Your dress code's just no fun, A.

Funny, if scary. I don't know if i should get out more to laugh at kids dressed like this or be glad that it's something i've never seen...

I was a strange child too.... I had non-sexual peer crushes since the second grade....

Thanks Texas. I know you are going to really have a hand ful when your boys get to the stupid stage. Some, like my oldest son, passed through it rather quickly. Some, Like me, dont get out of it until they graduate college! But none of it is done out of spite. It is just they lose all common sense until they have to grow up! My youngest has not hit it yet. He is only 12, so I am expecting it in the next year. His vooice is already changing, and he is growing a foot a year! (not quite, but it sure seems like it).

But Little girls will break your heart, just because they are the most delicate of flowers......until they grow up and move away!

I don't think that's really unusual. I think the weirdness comes in with the sex talk and the lust at those young ages. Maybe you were a good boy, afterall.

he he he . . . we should have saved the non-trampy clothes from the 80s!

No doubt. My boys are mischevious.

TW, great article! I think I'll go so far as to say it's brilliantly stated, and yet it is so obvious. As the parents of a four-year-old, my wife and I only have the next two decades to worry about her and how she will grow up. I am utterly disturbed with how many parent don't follow common sense and allow their daughters to violate every point you've stressed. I guess it's also important to show our son that while sluts and attention whores may look appealing, the drawbacks far outweigh the temporary satisfaction. Then maybe it will be possible to reduce the supply and demand of tramps.

Insightful

Here! Here!

A hearty round of applause for Texas Wahine for hitting this dead on!
As the father of two boys and a six year old daughter, it's amazing what kind of slutwear parents allow their daughters out in. These are KIDS, not L.A. prostitutes needing a John so they can score their next rock.

Little girls do NOT look sexy in tank tops, short short shorts or fishnet! There is nothing in the world sexy about young girls, and parents letting their daughters dress up like a porn star should be held responsible for all the heartache and anguish they are allowing into their daughters lives! These are items that women can choose to wear when they are adults (and more specifically not my daughter living under my roof), and hopefully only in the most appropriate situations. Girls of all ages: fishnet is tacky at the family reunion! Tank tops and funerals don't mix!

You'd think we're raising a generation of sexed up pop stars...

And for my sister in law, if you happen to read this, I know we've mentioned it before, but please cover yourself. Thanksgiving dinner is not enhanced by a 9" miniskirt, and the example you set for your daughter by wearing a tank top without a bra during Christmas is horrible. Besides, my boys don't need to learn about nudity from their aunt!

I don't envy you that . . . it's a scary world for raising little girls.

I agree . . . and it all really is the parents. The parents are the ones that purchase these clothes and allow their daughters to wear them out. Of course, the clothes are just a piece of the culture of over-sexualization that our children are living in.

guess it's also important to show our son that while sluts and attention whores may look appealing, the drawbacks far outweigh the temporary satisfaction. Then maybe it will be possible to reduce the supply and demand of tramps.

I'm doing my part, too, ED. I think it's very important to teach my boys to respect women, and it's a task I take very seriously.

Thanks for your comments.

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly. This all goes back to the parents and how they are choosing to raise their daughters. It really does.

That sounds awful. It reminds me of Amy Poehler's (sp?) character on Mean Girls.
