The Power of Flak

It has been very frustrating to see the great many posts claiming flak is worthless and can't counter carriers.  Several players I know as well as myself have tried to explain that flak does work and cuts down on the strikecraft numbers, but some people don't seem to believe us and occasionally make sensationalistic claims about flak being worthless and carriers being overpowered.

So, I present a couple demonstrations of the Power of Flak.  I have actually been using Flak a lot in the last few days, very successfully I might add.  Both of these games are good examples:  I was under a lot of pressure early, was outnumbered, and had to fight to gain the advantage.  Take a look and you will see that I use flak to successfully counter Carriers.....and Long Range Frigs, Basic Frigs, Heavy Cruisers, Capital Ships, and small Starbases.

These are Entrenchment Replays v1.01

Notice how dangerous Vasari is early game when they get some neutrals and go straight for the kill!

I'm Barnaby in this game.  What can I say, I was testing out flak.

So please, don't nerf those poor carriers any more.  The balance is just fine right now!

Best,

Cykur

PS.  Don't suicide your flak frigates on a Starbase or HC fleet and cry to me about it.  This isn't the purpose of flak -- I was just doing it for fun.

Light frigates are the answer? gimmie a break, they don't take ANY damage. I just tried it. It was hillarious, you can sit there and pound a star base to death with a bunch of lame flak frigates haha. How much anti-matter do light frigates take? I didn't even know they did damage to anti-matter.

Witness the power of this fully armed and operational Flak Frigate!

The various light frigates have military upgrades to steal / interfere with antimatter abilities.  They also do anti heavy damage which is good to kill both flak and support cruisers.  But, like all counters, you have to make enough of it!   =)   (Sound familiar?)

Haha yea but a flak frigate briggade with a single type of support ship IS supposed to be a counter and not a offense LOL  ,  I am advent player,  We have to play sometime and you should do this on me.  I have to try and beat it.  I have been playing to much today.  I wish there was a way to make the AI play a certain way for practice.

Ummm....well, if you KNOW what I'm going to do, it is certainly counterable.  What name do you go by online?  I'm on now and then -- just give me a shout if I'm not in a game.

My fleet, Kol + LRF + Hoshiko + Carriers got destroyed by Mothership + Defense Vessel + Illum.  He balled his fleet up, and I got arrogant, thinking there is no way he can stop me, and I was wrong, yes I was lazy on the micro, but the thing is I should have ownd him, but I lost.  I thought you were being stupid, but I believe you, now.  Apparently, the game has changed since Sins.

What should I do to counter the Illum + Defense Vessel battelball formation(why didn't I figure out something was up when he wasn't chasing my carriers)?  I can't make LF because of Illum, and my fighter's firepowers can actually be shut down by the flaks during early to mid game stages, while the stupid mothership keep taunting me with the shell reg.  HELP!!!

Same name as here.  I would just want one game at some point.

Umm...HC's with lots of repair.  If you already have carriers out, pick off the Illuminators until your fighters are all dead, then switch to bombers and keep em docked until they are built, then strafe ships in passes.  There is no simple solution when you fight a fleet that has multiple counters in it.  His fleet had capabilities in it to fight just about anything.  You just have to do a better job than him, or have superior numbers and ship quality.  A Dunov EMP Charge could also go a long way to breaking the shield tank.

Lol, haven't Flaks always been like this? They do crappy damage to non-fighters, but they have high hull for low supply cost and can fire at almost any angle. Add Hoshikos in there and the fun begins. Now they get a range bonus in entrenchment.

I thought the build rate penalty of 75% on the carriers if there were enemies around was a little excessive. I don't see why having an enemy ship in the grav well should decrease fighter build rate. The old settings where carriers suffered a build rate loss when under attack made sense though. Perhaps they should just give carriers a 100% decrease in build rate of fighters when under attack or they can't build any strike craft, lol.

Flaks have always been like this....and I'm pretty sure it is not a 75% penalty but 75% of normal build rate.

They build slower because when everyone is at battle stations and ready for combat maneuvers, it inconveniences the guys managing the manufacturing.

this replay is very interesting and funny...

It is great to have replays working again.

Cykur, do you typically build trade structures so early in the game on this small of a map, or did you just do it in this game because you thought you had the advantage in experience?  I usually play TEC but wait until I have filled up all my ship slots after two upgrades before I start on trade structures.  The ai appears to build them quite early to and I wonder if I am missing something key?

Great game and I think you have proved your point.

No, sometimes I go straight military.  Putting up trade first made my life difficult in the fight with Zoomers because he made a beeline straight for me, like most Vasari players tend to do.

having 4-5 flaks is good move early game, if you go against TEC or advent, vasari fighters are just too resiliant against flak... but still.

Having more than this is usualy waste, since using the flaks for full potential requires you to micro them insanely.

same way you counter any Advent Battleball. Shut down the mothership and the rest comes apart easily. the last thing you want to do is try to beat it with brute force because taht just increases the shield mitigation and makes Shield Restore insanely powerful.

Use anti-matter destroying abilities on the thing. all the light frigates get an upgrade for this at tech tier 4. you'll definitely lose your Lights to the illums but you only need a couple to get a Sabotage Reactor going or something.

the other counter will be certain cap ship abilities. for TEC its the Dunov's EMP pulse ability (which is extraordinarily good against Advent in general). for the Vasari its the Disruptive Strikes passive on the Kortul Devastator. For Advent its Ignite Antimatter on the Radiance. you could also use interrupting type abilities to break the channeling on Shield Restore. Ion Bolt, Reverie, Phase Out Hull, etc.

once the mothership is down you can just outgun illuminators with your own Javelis as long as they're backed by Hoshikos. otherwise, you gotta go for Kodiaks which are highly resistant to Illuminator damage.

Haha, NECRO!  Flak damage has gone through MAJOR changes in the last 5 years, in the old days it could do more damage to the heavier armors.  This thread is no longer relevant.

It is also no longer relevant because the current meta is to use LF's because corvettes hardcounter LRF's, which was the old meta for Vanilla / Entrenchment.

It is barely a soft counter because they tend to annihilate each other, and it requires critical mass, but you are right, Illuminators are the one exception.  My point is LF's are the early game meta-strategy now, at least in team multiplayer games.  And this thread is 5 years old and the arguments I originally presented are no longer valid.  Back in the day people constantly complained that flak was ineffectual, so I started making flak fleets and winning games.  You can't do that now.

And on another note, I see Hydraling and Stilat are probably the same person since both are brand new accounts that are making large amounts of troll posts and necroing threads.
