I see Sins having a likeness to the Great War in the path that it is apparently taking. In the first game you see a fully geared up TEC, a still strong Vasari, and the fresh Advent. In Entrenchment all sides are set up for a stalemate and predictably not much ground will change hands, or it will change hands so many times as to make no difference. When brute force does not work, the next expansion will come in with more subtle options, like diplomacy and possibly more non-combat stuff. A third expansion would most likely be the Breakthrough where all sides are whittled down and something has to give. Whether it be a superweapon, new classes of ships, or the introduction of whatever is chasing the Vasari.

Something will end the war; it's just a matter of what.

I was thinking of bio weapons that you could launch and kill all the crew on the ship. then have your capital ship send in pods to capture it

Another thing i would like to see is the ability to take over a planet with out bombing the hell out of it, like an attrition army battle on the surface, dropped by seige ships (giving seige ships a good ability, and a reason to build them).  The more troops you have on planet compared to your opponet the faster you take control (new planet upgrade, "garrison toops").  Then then after taking the planet by invasion, there could be upgrades on those planets like slave labor camps that would give you bonses to your production and resorse extraction but penaltys to your tax, loyalty, and population, and always a chance of revolts (the garrison toops upgrades will help keep this from happening).  If you liberate a planet where your people are enslaved, you would receve extra loyalty and tax bonses there for a short time (and bonses to your army during the assult as well).

i like this idea but to expand on it is that the population takes a small "-50% decrease" as well as all up grades to the plante will remain tat slots ect

and if you dont want slave camps cause you want full population, tax and what not, you could always have a one time  "exicute all pisoners" planet upgrade on planets with slave camps. (which opens up a whole new level of diplomicy as well, "you killed my people?  I'll distroy you!!!")
