Fences Update

So I was at home last night and after launching Impulse was told that there was an update for Fences. Looking at the history I see that the update specifically fixes the problem that I'm having here at work with wallpapers on multiple desktops. Since I had some free time at work today I figured that I would install Impulse and nab the update real quick. Well, it's now an hour later and I'm about ready to punch my PC because Impulse won't run so I can't update Fences...

At this point I'm tired of trying to find a solution to the impulse error "impulse was not able to create its temporary directories". The solutions I've found while googling that phrase haven't worked and all I want is the Fences update.

Is there any other way to obtain that update? Could I just grab it off of my home PC and install it here or is it available to download somewhere without Impulse?

The problem may have to do with with how your work PC is set up.  Is it on a network?  If so it could be a server problem on your end.

Vista?

Running as admin?

Your best bet is to start with a full build of Impulse. - Impulse Client - Full

I have a feeling you're on Vista. If that's accurate try this:

Make sure impulse is not running.

Delete the directory C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Impulse (ProgramData is a hidden folder)

Run impulse, and if it doesn't restart automatically after downloading the required stuff, do so manually.

That should solve the inability to create temporary files.

So can anyone explain why the 'History' I see for Fences has an entry dated 22 Feb 08 but has a version number of v0.95.1583 while my installed copy of Fences is 0.96.037?

I saw that and thought there was really no update.

And I just gotta say, for clutter-prone folks like me, Fences makes for good desktop neighbors. The snap-to-grid is a bit too tidy-feeling for me, but I can ignore that on account of how overall handy it is to be able to keep too much crap on my desktop and still have it useful.

End of GW's quote

It means Jeff is too lazy to type up what's changed. ;)

Sorry, I probably should have mentioned the OS. I'm on XP SP3.

Zubaz: I did try installing Impulse with that exe and still the same error message.

Mickeko: I tried pretty much everything but just deleting that folder for some stupid reason.

Going to try reinstalling with the full client again and then delete that folder, if the message still occurs. Will let you guys know if that works.

The folder to delete on XP would be:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Impulse

Right, so deleting the Impulse folder located at "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\" let me into Impulse. It recreated the folder and everything is working ok with Impulse now.

On the downside I updated Fences through Impulse and that did jack to fix the wallpaper issue.

Just to give a little more info, that I should have given in the first place sorry, I'm running what reports as Fences v 0.96.1533 Beta if I right click on the desktop and go to Edit Fences > About. It also reports as Fences 0.96.039 if I go and take a look at it in Impulse. My PC here is running Windows XP SP3 and I'm using UltraMon v 3.0.4 Beta with three monitors.

Last thing I'm going to try is just uninstalling Fences and then reinstalling through Impulse to see if that resolves the multi-monitor wallpapers problem that I'm having.

no such luck with a full uninstall of fences and reinstall to fix the wallpapers. That's ok though, I've got some other stuff that I need to get to. Sending a copy of my debug info.
