Thanks to the site vets

just wanted to say thanks to the vets of the forums and especially those who skin.

a lot of forums you go to these days have a large membership that seem to do nothing but flame the noobs and forget that they too once needed help in the very areas that they are flaming the new people about, treating them as though they are stupid.

I have yet to see that here, the vets respectfully provide help without a better than attitude.

thanx people.

Not quite *all* yet but getting closer every day.

Actually there are 2 such forums that are similarly named. One is "Off-topic" (this one, /forum/412) and there's also "Off-Topic (note the capital T, /forum/349) neither of which is yet accessible from https://forums.wincustomize.com although both are newly accessible from https://forums.joeuser.com.

Four months ago the "Off-topic" (/forum/412) forum was accessible only from the Demigod, Galciv2, Impulse, Sins and Stardock sites, since then I know Joe User has been added, perhaps others. Similarly the "Off-Topic (/forum/349) was only accessible from the Galciv2 and Stardock sites and in both cases seems to be a Galciv2 specific off topic forum since in both cases it is a subforum of the "GalCiv II" forum.

Interestingly enough on Joe User both of these forums are obscurely placed together as subforums under the "Misc" (/forum/17) forum and so it's unlikely that anyone there would intentionally post a thread to that forum however since any activity causes threads in these forums to scroll by on the recent posts list, replies from Joe User will probably be common.

The point is that you really do have no clue *where* a post or reply is coming from. I probably know as much about SD's forum structure as any non Stardock employee having exhaustively checked out 755 forums spread out over 11 sites of which 373 were unique, but like I said my information is at least 4 months old. Since then a new forum site has been added (https://forums.elementalgame.com) as well as an unknown number of new forums added and, as as we have seen, access to existing forums have been expanded to sites where they were not previously accessible.

The new guys should also checkout ImpulseDriven.net  B)

It is SD highly unpublicized overall community superstructure. I suggest for people to really check out the "dashboard" section as well as the personal "profile" section. There are some good stats there to be sure.

Posting from the GC2 barrio:

I haven't posted nearly as long as my Member No. might suggest, but I both appreciate my 'elders' such as Mumblefratz and try to emulate them as much as I can.

I also appreciate the fact that most of our 'noobs' start out with questions and don't make their forum debuts an instant flamewar. Apparently, that's not uncommon in other game 'communities.'

Eh, they almost happen (flamewars I mean) like when somebody starts bashing art direction or something.  (you know what I'm talking about... if you don't then this insert is not addressing you.  See Elemental: War of Magic art threads)

I mostly blame the involvement that Stardock has with the community.  Many game communities, people just kinda run amok, but stardock is actually getting things done here (see beta feedback section) and as a result it raises the atmosphere to a semi-professional level (as professional as the games industry ever really gets)

The exception being the noobs that are used to other game forum sites and start their posts here with,

"I FUCKING HATE THIS GAME"

or

"I BOUGHT THIS PEICE OF SHIT AND IT ISN"T WORKING"

Not sure what clasifies as a vet, from GC2 anyway, but as far as noobs go, the ones who open up with anything akin to the above two comments don't deserve to be answered to by any of the vets.

I know i was thankful 3 long years ago that even though i was somewhat of an ass (i can hear the laughter already...shhh! ;P ) the community was helpful and forgiving.

Are there really that many left as regular posters who started back in early '06 or late '05? (GC2)

@Kitkun. LOL. Yup mentioning OT and stardock forums in one sentance is one sure fire way to catch yourself a Mumblefratz.....

That, and the comparatively high brow of the current population tends to freeze low-brows out quite efficiently. Call it bullying, call it flaming, people can call it what they want, but it forces douches to either assimilate or get the hell out.

;P

I was a regular GC2 lurker in late '05 and I think I started posting in spring of '06. I still see some 'old' names, but it is harder to catch them since the site-sprawl-merger thing. I'm very impressed with folks like Iztok who still keep typing to new folks even though they've put the game down themselves (for the time being, anyway).

Well, perhaps I don't spend so much time on forums that I've seen a realy flame war.   I remember once I was taking a 'find out your stats in real life' and I was asked the question 'have you participated in a flame war' of course, I said yes because I play with fire all the damn time.   We used to have a 'pyro fest' every year  right after the 4th of july when the fireworks went on sale, and we'd shoot roman candles at each other. It wasn't until I asked "why does that effect charisma?" was I explained what  a flame war really is.   So maybe what I imagine a flame war to be now is like a 'minor disagreement' where a flame war is something I've never really seen.

I like the way you phrased it luckmann.   They must assimilate XD

I myself was a lurker from about Jan 06 to my first post in April of 06 i think.....

Not too many of the same faces around now as then though.

Though in some cases thats a very good thing!!
