If It Weren't For Bad Luck...

This morning I put my truck in the engine shop in Fargo so they could find the source of the coolant leak as well as get my heat working again. I was literally freezing in my truck.

It pretty much took all day for them to do the repairs and to test to make sure it was really fixed. They had to replace the thermostats and the radiator cap. They thought the head might need to be replaced (again) so they put it on the dyno and tested for compression. Turned out the head was ok this time.

Once I got the truck out of the shop I backed under my trailer and got set to start running for PA. As I pulled out onto the highway I noticed that the trailer looked way too close to the road (low boy trailer). I glanced at the suspension air gauge and it read zero. Hmm, maybe I forgot the flip the switch. Nope, switch in correct position.

I toggled the switch a few times to no effect. Great. I pulled into the Petro to check it out. I could hear the air leaking badly from the air bags. Wonderful.

I am now sitting in the Petro shop waiting for them to replace all four air bags. They had ruptured when I backed under the trailer. This is pretty amazing as the load is quite light. They said they had simply gotten brittle from the extreme cold. It happens.

Dispatch, the broker, and the customer are all going nuts at this point as they were expecting this load delivered right away. Shit happens, but I still had to field the phone calls all damn day.

When I called dispatch to tell them about the air leak, after spending all day in a shop, I think he just gave up.

Like the man said, if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all.

Yeah, it was a pretty fucked up day. But I did finally manage to get the load delivered and am now reloaded and heading back West.

Word:  New Job.

Trucking companies are hiring all over, Mason.  There's no freakin' reason for you to be driving the piece of shit your current company expects you to make a living with, and if their other trucks are just as bad, the company itself ain't long for this world.

Actually our trucks are good trucks. I've just had some bad luck with this one. It's basically a lemon and the boss knows it. He's already told me that I get my pick of the next crop of new trucks they buy, which hopefully will be in the Spring. Funny thing is, they bought these Western Stars because they're supposed to be top of the line trucks, and honestly all of the other ones we have haven't had the problems this one has. Just my luck I guess.

I could jump ship and go to work elsewhere, and to be honest have given it some thought, but all in all this outfit is a good fit for me and have always treated me right, so I guess I'll stick it out until I get a new truck.
