GUI 2010

GUI 2010

Here is my wish list for the 2010 GUI Championships: A suite category, consisting of,

WindowBlinds skin (that could also be entered in the WB category)

IconPackager theme (that could also be entered in the IP category)

Wallpaper (at least one, preferably a choice)

DesktopX Theme (hideable, open/close weather, media, system metrics, clock, etc).

DesktopX widgets, objects, gadgets (at least 4, not necessarily from the DX theme)

Docks (tabbed & zoomer)

Rainlendar

Xion

Sysmetrix

Dream????

This would be a real team competition, and would allow a lot of talented people to participate that for now can only be cheerleaders.

Another wish: screenshots that don't have to be scrolled; that can be viewed completely on a desktop.

What do you think?

The GUI Vhamps are not every year.  It's too big to manage that often,

And to speak of the next so soon after the last may cause Zoomba's head to explode.  Not cool.  ;)

Asking a bit too much on that I think, for one, too many diff monitor res. and 2.. its SCROLLING!!!  ..not backpacking thru Afghanistan!

Plus, impossible to show, XP, Vista, several different elements of a WB in a say.. 1280 screeny...effectively.

Sounds good, but how many teams will actually participate in suites unless its mandatory? I don't see that many new suites in the suites gallery.

I doubt there'll ever be a category for widgets.  DX Widgets are harder to standardize (and judge, for that matter)--it's like apples and oranges. One could make a live action, interactive, talking fish and another could make a gadget that teaches Spanish. The first is more fun and the second is more productive. How could you tell which is best? Apples and oranges.

lol. I've heard about bubbles, fish tanks, and now seahorses. I'm curious to see your finished product. Is this a DX theme or a widget?

Widget hon, he's not perfect, but I'll work on that, his eye's move, he floats up and now, looks kinda cute :meow:   plus I've always wanted a Seahorse, and Frogboy won't ever get around to making me one no matter how much I beg:rofl:

I've made a bunch of Saw [movie] widgets too, the clock is actually not bad, and it's animated with that evil puppet laugh:ninja:

I wouldn't want Zoomba's head to explode. He's a nice guy, so please don't tell him about this post.

One of the main reasons I posted this is because there are a lot of skinners that don't get to take part. What about a guy like Webgizmos, for instance, or all the DX people, the cursor makers, the artists who skin the minor programs like Rainlendar? If there was a Suite category, similar to WindowBlinds, IconPackager, and Dreams, then just about anybody that skins could get on a team and take part. The team winners, MaxStyles, has ten members that produced a suite. It's a perfect example of what I mean for a category.

Another reason is that I like suites and matching parts. If you like them too, then wouldn't it be great to get 20, 30, or 40 new ones? I also think DesktopX is a great program and is more worthy than Dreams, for instance.

   Thanks for taking part.

DX will never be an option.  Judging would be impossible without a thousand sub catagories.

I think DX could be made judgeable by specifying what widgets would be elgible, those being the most commonly used. A DX theme could be specifically defined as well: weather, calendar, etc. Any extras, like fish blowing bubbles, could get bonus points. I'm not really campaigning for a separate DX category, but as the GUI's get bigger, it could be added.

Stardock is built upon suite-making programs. A category of "Suite" would utilize all the Stardock programs, and all the skinners that make skins for them. I see that no skinner has come out and agreed to the idea, but I bet the DX, CursorFX, dock-makers, etc. would like to get in.

A DX category just for the most commonly used widgets? Hmm, I don't think that does the program any justice. The most commonly used widgets are clocks, weather, and meters...which would already be part of the theme. There's only so many ways to do a clock, weather, or meter before it just becomes reskinning.

Alas, I don't think it's feasable for the GUI champs. But I'd still like to see more skinning categories other than WB, dreams, etc.

If you think about it, you could apply that line of reasoning to WB skins.
There's only so many ways to do a START MENU, TASKBAR, OR WINDOW SHELL before it just becomes reskinning.
There could easily be a category for non-standard DX widgets if somebody wanted one where the power of DX could be demonstrated, along with a category of specified common widgets.
A Suite category gives everybody a chance to get into the game, instead of being a spectator or benchwarmer, and it fits the Stardock philosophy and business model like nothing else could.

A Suite category gives everybody a chance to get into the game,

You have at least 2 years notice. You know there will be a WB and Icon category no matter what. Start honing your skills. :)

It seems the wrong direction to expand the contest to fit some's need to participate...... rather.... those that want to participate learn to skin the catagories that WILL be in the contest.

Hypotheteically you do add Widgets, docks, cursors to the GUIC. Now the screenshot people want a piece of the action.

Organize a seperate contest for programs you think are left out. People always jump all over those, even if it is for bragging rights.

I want to be an Olympic Athlete but unfortunately I had a run in with aging...and a bit o' bacon. Perhaps they should add a catagory for me so I don't feel left out. mmmmmm.....  baconatholon... that sounds like something I could get into and train 24/ 7 for.

That's just it, DX isn't necessarily a skinning program and WB is. I tend to agree with NT on this...we'd probably need to organize our own competition. However, docks and cursors are akin to skinning, so I don't see why they aren't included in GUIC.
