Dread Lords will not install on Windows 2000

Just purchased GalCiv II:Dread Lords at Best Buy last night.  The packaging claims that the game requires 98/Me/2k/Xp/Vista, and it reccommends XP.  However much to my frustration, when I attempted to install the game it clearly told me "Sorry, Gal Civ 2 requires Windows XP."

I'm quite irritated, as the system requirements on the retail package are clearly wrong, and I feel that I was essentially lied to and tricked into purchasing a game that refuses to even install.  I'm even more frustrated because I've wanted to play this game for quite a while, and was rather shocked when my older system (supposibly) met the box requirements.  So what recourse do I have here?  Did I just toss $20 down the tubes?  I can't return it now that I've opened it.  I know no one is going to like this suggestion, but should I just torrent a copy of Dread Lords?  It seems that the installer is the problem, the game may very well run on my system but the installer refuses to.

Any help (I've searched the forums, but have turned up nothing) would be greatly appreciated!

An easier (and faster, in fact) way to fix your issue is to download and install Stardock Central, which still has DL 1.5 on it.  It's been phased out in favor of Impulse, but Impulse won't run on 2k due to requiring IE7.

To my knowledge, the only update for DL that didn't make it onto SDC is the recent fixes for Vista, which shouldn't be relevant in your case.

I am however assuming, as you are, that DL will run on 2k and that it is simply an installer problem.  I haven't personally tried to run/install DL on a 2k system.

Only problem with that theory is my personal rig (I'm at work now) has no internet connection!  I should have mentioned that!  My Apologies!

SDC can archive.  I'm unaware if SDC requires a connection initially (to restore an archive), though.  (I believe it doesn't, but I'm not positive.)

Excellent, I shall give this a shot.  Hopefully my laptop can run SDC so I can download it there and then transfer to my desktop.  Thank you very much!

After it shows up in SDC, right click on it and select Archive Application --> Download and Archive.  Otherwise, you're looking at downloading and installing (probably on a non-2k OS, as it seems unlikely your laptop is 2k as well) and then archiving the installation.  I know Impulse has difficulties restoring an archive from an installation on another OS, but I've never tried with SDC.  Better safe than sorry, though.
