Hmm, lost track of the dates, I think you are right, Robin Hood just snuck in at end of September?

Ahh but the anticipation makes it so much better... and worse!

I too would love to see the Galciv2 Beta as the October/November game. .

I'm happy with my value for money out of my sub after 4 months or so but they did promise a game a month until December.

Gal Civ has been a frustrating experience for me. I'm a longtime Space Empires IV player, and before that Stars! What I'd like to see is something like either of those games with the GC AI and diplomacy.

GalCiv can be very challenging on any but the easiest levels. Try visiting the GalCiv forums, there are some great tips there.

I don't think he meant it was frustrating because it was difficult to play... I think he meant it was frustrating because his preconceptions and prior experience with other 4X games kept reminding him of what wasn't there and what was different in Galciv compared to those games. He was frustrated because he was trying to fit Galciv into the mold of his own vision - but it wasn't built to encompass everything he wanted it to be.

Well hang in there Frightlever, Galciv 2 is not far away and it will certainly build upon Galciv 1 and may be something closer to what you are wishing for.

What 4D said IS close to the truth. My frustration with Gal Civ lies in the inequality between me and the computer players, the lack of options and the role of luck.

The computer players know right at the start where all the yellow stars are and head there like homing missiles. If I roll a random universe (which would be my preference) I'd like to think I have as much chance as the next guy to stumble across the good planets. I've played a game where I rolled a value 26 planet within a couple of turns of my home world but by the time I'd found it and mobilised a colony ship to move there it was taken. SO... I reloaded from the start of the game and immediately sent my colony ship there. Sure enough I got there first but a couple of turns later another ship arrived and because it couldn't colonise it just sat there until the shooting started many turns later. Another time early in the game another player let loose an anomlay monster (since obviously I'm not stupid enough to do that myself) within a few squares of my cluster of planets. It proceeded to trash every ship I built until I gave up. I haven't checked to see if the anomaly monsters can be turned off yet but if they can they will be.

So supposing I manage to grab a couple of planets at the start that are around the value 16+ mark, I'll have 2 or 3 planets (on a large map, say). To grab any other planets I'll have to get transports even if I just want to nuke them. In fact a lot of the time there's only 1 research route to take to achieve a particular goal. With Space Empires I can capture a planet with troops eventually or pound it to dust virtually from the start. Later on I can use various stellar manipulation to take out entire Solar Systems if I want to. With Stars! I could land troops or colonists on existing enemy colonies or even mass drive them out of existence with megaton mineral packets. Even reading this back tells me that I just have a preference for 4X games with more of an emphasis on death and destruction.

The lack of ship design is also glaring and I hope it's added to the sequel.

On the other hand GalCiv has a few things that still draw me back. The AI diplomacy can be interesting, though OTOH there've been times when I've gotten dragged into a war over a random special event, which just seems wrong. Ultimately, the role of influence is probably the best thing the game has going for it.

GalCiv has the feel of an old school conceptual board game, rather than the meat and potatoes fun-with-spreadsheets 4X games I'm used to.

I guess you aren't spending much money on espionnage, since it will help to prevent diplomatic blunder.

BTW, have you checked the Galactic Civilizations forums and especially the strategic forum here https://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GS

So no offense to the GalCiv conversation that got started here but how about getting back to the topic, whats the deal with the October TGN game? Could we get an official word on its status?

My frustration with Gal Civ lies in the inequality between me and the computer players,

All of what you have said pretty much parallels my frustrations when I started playing GalCiv. After I tried some of the tips I found in the forums I discovered that I could find more yellow stars faster than the computer. I don't think that the computer knows where they are, it just seems to be really efficient at exploring/building. The best tip I found was to not wait until you find a habitable planet before building additional colony ships. The colony ship should be halfway to the planet when you find it.

No offense taken... we did kind of hijack the thread.

In a previous thread KarmaGirl stated:

We pretty much put them up when we get them, which is usually pretty soon after we negotiate them.

My guess, since most of the non-stardock games are Strategy First titles, is that due to the financial difficulties Strategy First is having there has been some sort of problem negotiating new titles.

I think I read either on the GalCiv forum or in the unoffical strategy guide that the computer players do know where the yellow stars are. It was part of a discussion on the differences between the AI settings.

And yeah, it was naughty to hijack the thread. Sorry!

The exposure The Political Machine (about the only game in the TG lineup I have no interest in trying) has been getting has probably been keeping Stardock busy too.

I would love to see a mock-up of 'A day in the life of a Stardock Employee' and just see how busy the staff are on the multiple projects (MOM2, Galciv2, Wincustomize2k5, Object Desktop, Blog Navigator, Joe User, theme creation etc) that Stardock have underway. With the amount of products Stardock has produced in the last few months I am fairly surprised they haven't overreached as I'm pretty sure they have a finite amount of staff with a specific number of limbs and brains between them. Still I say keep em coming, and if we end up getting our October game along with the November one at the end of this month then I can handle that.... It's just the 'not knowing' part that bothers me!

It looks like the October game is....

World War II: Frontline Command

Although it's just a place holder on Stardock right

Is this the game that its developers refused to support as Stratagy First never paid them royalties? It sounds great that they are coming back to it again.

I am downloading it... any ideas on how it is in the meantime?

I downloaded it this weekend and it won't install. Not sure if its ready yet. Sure hasn't been any type of announcement about it yet.

I downloaded and installed it last night. The only problem I had was the game launch icon in the start menu was not functioning. I went into the game's bin folder and ran it from there... using launch.exe I think. The game ran fine after that. Perhaps the powers that be can fix this in the SDC install routine. (Or perhaps I downloaded it a bit too early.

I only played through the first mission, but had fun with it. The game gave me the impression I was playing a slightly less detailed version of Close Combat or Squad Assault, but take that comparison lightly since I only played one mission on the novice setting, haphazardly without reading the manual or playing the tutorial. The controls were not hard to master by simply playing around with the mouse clicks I was able to control my units somewhat effectively (2 enemy killed for every man lost ) and destroy the radar installation.

Hmmm... I downloaded it but it didn't work.
I realize that the shortcut is to be changed, but even launching it from the \bin folder its not working.
Screen goes black and then application ends.

Also tried to launch the "profile" application - it seems to be working, showing landscapes and counting the fps...

Any clue?

My problem seemed to be on my end as its working for me now.

However, I too have the same problem that markos2 has as the launch shortcut provided in the startup menu (and in the main wwii directory) does not work but I can use the icon in the /bin folder to start mine and it works fine.

I tried the profile application as well and it worked for awhile but then crashed (? or maybe just stopped) and the game would not launch after that. Gave an error that it could not find a directx9 compatible driver. Rebooted and did not run that profile app again and the game then launched with no difficulties (excluding the whole launch shortcut issue mentioned above).

For those of us who can't work out how to get to it, is there an official release due soon
