Sins of a Solar Empire: Entrenchment Tips & Tricks

Today Sins of a Solar Empire: Entrenchment BETA 1 goes up and this article will give you a quick run through of some of the features and what we're hoping to get out of it.

First thing to be aware of: Installing the BETA of Sins of a Solar Empire: Entrenchment overwrites your existing Sins install. So you'll want to back up Sins if you want to switch back and forth.

Now, for people who play on-line, we're still working on some of the issues with the ICO server locking up. It's a top priority to nail these down.

image

We are still working on costs and pacing for BETA 1.  A lot of the costs for star bases and other things are largely placeholders to get feedback on.

One big suggestion we have is to set the rates to Fast otherwise the game pacing is very slow.

In the final version, we'll probably make Normal speed what is currently Fast and Fast will be made even faster.

At first glance, one might think Entrenchment is very much like the original game. But it won't take long to notice some big differences...

First, military research labs get a big boost with the new defensive tech tree which lets players construct starbases and upgrade their weapons in lots of interesting ways.

One of the things you'll probably notice is how much better the AI is, particularly the unit AI.  Ironclad's AI team did a great job on making units a lot more intelligent. You should notice that pretty quickly in battle.

And how about registry and all other Windows related bullshit!?!?!

I hope Annatar is right but his way sounds way too much MacLike and as we know Sins runs on Windouz where nothing is simple...

Sins run on linux too... by using PlayonLinux, i have several version of sins running, each with their own config, mod, map and savegame...

I have a suggestion Maybe make the upgrades cheaper for the first initial 2 on the starbase, and have it get more expensive the more upgrade's you add on. Oh and how about being able to use all the upgrade's for the starbabes instead of only getting 7. I mean whats the use of having them when they can't even fend off a fleet of ships.

Example

1. Fisrt two upgrades you use on the starbase maybe costs 800/100/100

2. Third upgrade jumps to 1000/150/150

3. Fourth upgrade goes too 2500/200/200 and so fourth until your starbase has used all of its upgrades that you researched.

The modders either dont have the files as yet to update the existing mods or just hvnt had the time to update the files. Trust me, it takes alot of time and hard work.

No one wants to update their mods for a beta. They would just have to redo it all over again when it comes out of beta.

Also, the point of beta is to test out the new expansion. We wouldn't want people being distracted from that testing phase as it would slow down feedback.

That makes a good point.

It's like buying a stock car.  It's pretty cheap, but once you add performance parts, it all starts adding up.

Will any of the Entrenchment AI improvements get into a Sins patch?

Starbases? Serious? I was wondering where they were. MUST HAVE, no longer be overwhelmed by fleets while sending ships somewhere else. :D

To all you guys that want to back up Sins before installing Entrenchment, it might be an idea to create a mod in your user directory with the features of the original game rather than starbase and stuff

If whta im saying makes no sense, sorry

I downloaded entrenchment before backing up the old one (didn't read this in time) so it overwrote it, and not many people are playing the beta online at the moment.  Is there a way to use impulse to restore the old version? For instance, removing sins and then you can redownload the original from impule or something, then back that one up, then redownload the new one? Arg.

Yeah, uninstall Sins, and you will have the option of downloading and reinstalling. If you copy the Entrenchment version folder, you can have both at once.

Nice post Frogboy.

Just off the top of my head the purple skybox is damn sexy!

Couple of tibids you guys might wish to include with the expansion for us MP types is more Game Options.  I know you guys have not worked up the whole team placement, but could you at least introduce Shuffle teams option? This would basically shuffle players around before the game is launched, but it would keep the number of players/team.

Other Game options that would be great: Bring back the mineral options.  That was probably my favorite options.  You used to have Random, Low, Medium, and High. I'm not sure why that was taken out :(

But when you bring it back, give it a slight twist! By separating it into minerals per each planet type! That way you can set Minerals for Asteroids, Terans, Deserts, Ice, Volcanic, and Even Neutral sites!

Lastly maybe allow setting of Militia levels. That way you can boost militia levels per each planet, that would give better pacing for expansion. The random assortment can really be unbalancing.  But you can leave it as option. Random, Low, Medium, High Militia would be faboulous.

And lastly if you can break the Militia Settings to per planet, much like I wish resoruce settings to be planet dependent, that would be great.

I leave you with a question: Were there any new planet types/sites added to the game?

Keep up the good work. Later

Frogboy, I don't know where the best place to ask this would be, but what does TDN (on the TEC capital ships) mean?

Best tip for the game: get your economy rolling, then buy all the military hardware you could want but at first buy only that which you need to acquire new colonies.
