Brad's Dream Machine: November 2008

If I were building a machine for best long-term value and short term performance, this is what I would currently put it together with:

CPU: Intel Core i7

Graphics Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4870X2

Memory: 12 Gigabytes

OS: Windows Vista 64-bit (moving to Windows 7 with the first beta)

Hard Drive: Intel X-25E Extreme SSD for the boot drive, A 1 Terrabyte drive for secondary.

Monitor: Good 24 inch LCD.

Must-Have Software:

  • Object Desktop Ultimate
  • Multiplicity
  • Windows Live Mesh
  • Impulse
  • Microsoft Office
  • Steam
  • Corel Draw
  • TechSmith Jing

Must-Have Games to install immediately

  • Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate
  • Sins of a Solar Empire
  • Left4Dead

Must-Have Games to prepare for in 2009

  • Demigod
  • Dawn of War 2
  • The Sims 3 (yea, I admit it)

Just out of curiosity what do you see that costing, minus the software and monitor and plus a case and power supply? :S

Sounds like a powerhouse. . . I don't know anybody who has that much RAM right now.

I had to look up some of your software choices. I might have to play with Jing when I have a chance (won't be this weekend--on the road again).

From what I've read recently about the Dawn of War 2 SP, it's either going to be really really cool or it will suck. Most people don't play SP anymore (besides me) so I don't know if it really matters to you anyway, but the idea of micromissions and no in-mission saves sounds really odd, although having a branching storyline sounds good. I guess I'll just have to see what the final product looks like.

I agree with everything besides the Sims 3 and the 90 expansions it will have. Also, where is Empire Total War on that list of '09 games? :annoyed:

BRAD YOU AND ME - DoW II - THE DAY IT COMES OUT. >:( IT'S ON!  (hopefully Tau will be in first expansion with IG)

EDIT:

BTW, Dawn of War II will be on Impulse also in all likelyhood. ;)

Well then looks like thats another game I'll buy off Impusle... if I can preorder it and download it on release day (So so far I have demigod, sins + entrenchment, and I plan on buying the Supcoms off impulse too)

You have my address, right.  :D

I'd like the memory. Yesterday I launched 8 Kols, 4 Marzas, 2 Dunovs, 2 Arkkans and 100 Kodiaks at the enemy, the close up action got a little jerky...

Entrenchment is not on the list.

I don't see a mobo or power supply listed.  Any preferences?

L4D is a blast and a half... good choice Brad. :congrat:

I'll take a quantum computer, thanks.

:)

(Which begs the question-if a blind man looks at a quantum computer, does it stop working?  ;))

There's no shame in playing with electronic dolls. The Sims is a fine game. And it probably raises your creativity stat or something, just so long as you remember to check your hunger need.

Looking forward to Dawn of War 2. Think they've taken it in absolutely the right direction. Also, is it just me or are the Blood Ravens the best interpretation of a Space Marine chapter ever? I am hoping for Relic to return to Homeworld at some point with a Battlefleet Gothic (Warhammer 40k space battles) game.

Empire: Total War and Dragon Age also for me. Mirror's Edge looks very interesting too.

Paint.net + Adobe Illustrator instead of Corel Draw. Open Office + Texlipse instead of MS Office (am cheapskate). Eclipse and Visual Studio.

Even on a 24 inch LCD, I don't think you'd need a 4870x2 for any of those games, although I fully expect DoW 2 to look stunning and know that Demigod already does.

Blood Angels are better. Technically I think Blood Ravens are a successor chapter of the Blood Angels (that or the Raven Guards and the BAs had a baby and they became the Blood Ravens). I hope that if they add a Chaos campaign it's Death Guard, Nurgle FTW.

I have two servers at home that are xenon quad-core with 16 gigs of ram each having 1.5 terabyte harddrives. One of them has sins on it and 1000 planet maps are very fun on it with 10 people having max fleets.

Servers don't play games... BUT THEY CAN DANCE. In all serious though, I think you mean computers... I would think.

Caedus - send me one :3

They were orignaly a server for a company that thery shut down 30 uneeded servers(I can't disclose any more info than that) and using the same componets it became a linux computer and mange to make sins work on it the other is a server fo storage, a hosting server, and web server.

You can have the server/computer Thrawn if you want give me your computer that your going to get this december plus another $1000.:erk:

The "personal computing subsection was made a while ago.

My current daily desktop is 4 cores with 8 gb and my 3D/graphics station has 8 cores with 16 gb of RAM, but it's designed to render 16 million polygon critters into 30 megapixel frames - oof!

Brad must be dreaming of some HUGE compiles.  :D

I'd also never go with ATI.  I'm an nVidia supporter BIG TIME.

Nice hardware specs .... B) .   I hope you plan on putting all that in a full

tower with a NICE .. big 1300  or 1600 WATT PSU ... with lots of cooling.

You might even think about adding a blueray drive too.

On the drive selection you might want to have 2 Intel flashs drive setup in

a mirroring config. for the OS and 4 1T HDs in a raid-5 config too,

in case of drive failures ... Having a hard drive fail on you without the

data being backed up totally stinks ... :'( ..

I would also go with a Asus mother and don't forget about some nice speakers

for the system too.

I have a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit OEM ... but I'm still in the process

of buying the hardware for my new system.  I have the mother board, processor,

memory, hard drives, blueray drive, graphics, and sound card. The only thing

missing is a PSU and full tower with lots of fans. I have 8GB of memory ... so

I might get the 64bit version of Vista .... then upgrade to Windows 7 when its

release ...

I might even have to run a third power line to my home office to power my

new system ... :D

I honestly love the black templars, just cuz they're nuts. Well that and they have a really distinct character. And if you really want a BFG game, I'd recommend you check out the sins modding forum or this link to the shiny BFG mod alpha I just released.

Blood Angels are better. Technically I think Blood Ravens are a successor chapter of the Blood Angels (that or the Raven Guards and the BAs had a baby and they became the Blood Ravens).

Doubt it. Blood Ravens don't have the blood thirst. Raven Guards maybe, but their styles seem a bit different to me, although some chapters go way farther overboard on being different.

About the computer, Brad, have fun with it for the four years you don't have to upgrade, but I honestly think you may do a bit better a touch lower on the price scale and upgrading some in a few years.

Why Radion instead of NVidia?

Also I never understand MAC OSers...

I've always thought that MAc was the most powerful and stable machine ever built. I think that's why there are mac users.

I've always been a gamer it's why I've always used a PC otherwise I would og gotten a MAC.
