Starting an Elemental Fan Site

Do you want to get involved?

I want to set up an Elemental fan site and I'm looking for serious and committed community members to get involved. I'll cover all the setup costs and whatnot. So I wanted to know if anyone interested and what domain name do you guys would work best?

What do you mean when you want people that would add "content"?

Content is a very open ended thing... It can range from making desktop images to doing reviews on the game to coding interactive stuff for the website like we did for the clansofsin database or the database we developed and for another site we set up: twoworldscraft.com. It gets some major traffic to this day and I have not had anyone to update it in some time. Sad really, given it is/was considered the best game content site on the net for that title.

Anyway it really depends on what people want and can do to contribute to the community.

Delete me - something not right with the page change thing....

A lot of the content stuff will really start coming out once the game launches. There's a long time until the beta so the only real content we'll get are various screenshots, videos, previews, interviews, etc. With the beta we might get some FAQs, a strategy section with guides/tutorials, depending on how early we get mod access a mod section might be set up.. so on so forth.

But until then, it's mostly just picking up various bits of news and previews :P

Hum.. it seems I won't be of any help until the game release. I can't draw (i'm just so plain bad at this). I can't really code.

I can do guides for pros/cons of technologies or things like that.

Anyway I wish you good luck :)

I would be interested in contributing to a fan site, although I can't promise a large time commitment, so as long as you're OK with sporadic contributions then I'm on board.

I can do programming (I don't have much experience in web programming), but I'd be more interested in content.

I hope so. I added you to the webdev group so you should be able to post to the news forum if the guys did not change things on me.

Tells me I don't have permission to post in the Sins News forum :P

Annatar has the right general idea for now. What I would like to do is once the domain name is decided to set up subs for each race. For example like: TheFallen.ElementalGame.net. That sub would have a unique frontend and special content for it. All would of course be lined at the top domain level which would naturally reflect any new content or news updates for all as well as the game in general. We could then make fully interactive unit databases and spells -etc...

@Vieuxchat - No worries. Guides are a very important resource especially for a new franchise.

@Canomilk - Great. We can always use another content person and like I said in my prior post I set up the community to give people an opportunity to learn new skills without worrying about the money side of things and hopefully in the process create something that gamers can benefit from. In short if you got the time, interest and talent then there is always something that can be done to support the community.

@Annatar - Please try again I changed the permission set. The guys did change things on me.

Yupyup, that worked. Posted some bits, I imagine it takes a bit to reflect on clansofsin, since it's not showing up yet :P

Yep the modcraft db sends the new info to the other server every 15 minutes (I think). It is Mysql magic.

Really? You can graphics?
I said I could make a page if *given* the graphics and told the layout that was desired ;)

I actually don't see it updated yet :x Clansofsin that is.

How about something simple like EWOM.com

       or

WoMnotMoM.com

armiesofelemental.com

suckitatari.com

P.s. I would like to help with the site if I could!

OK knock-off action that will work in a pinch.

You are correct. I have asked MrHide to follow up. I think it may because we changed server farms last month.

That is the one most seem to like for now. Regarding helping sure. What are you interested in doing?

I also like the suggestion from NorsemanViking of Elementalfanatics.com

or something with fanatics in...mainly because it harkens back to Civfanatics, with is one of the best and most successful comunity site for a game out there. Plus I am a huge Civ fan, so that's a web site I've gone to ALOT

Maybe EWOMfanatics.com

NotMoMfanatics.com

P.s. I hope yall didn't already choose a name, becuase if so I feel stupid

But the booze evens it all out :P But no, don't think the name is settled yet.

Oh, a fansite! Sounds like fun. I'd be interested in helping, but I have a lot of real-life issues taking up most of my time. I can contribute occasionally as I have time, but can't really commit to anything consistent.

As for how to help... I've worked on a couple of fansites before. I just did news articles and a small tutorial, but I like writing and would enjoy making guides and tutorials and such on a sporadic basis.

I've also recently started teaching myself web design. (got the itch to make a GalCiv site based around ship designing) However, I don't think I know enough yet to do anything useful. Just basic HTML / CSS, though I seem to have a knack for reverse-engineering scripts coded in languages I've never heard of before. I think that means I'd be really good at this stuff once I learn it, but I'm not quite there yet.

Great to see this kind of great dedication so early in the game's cycle.

I thought about this very thing just the other day and came up with a couple of idea, one that immediately struck me as funny

MasterOfElemental(.com)

It pays respect to what came before and will resonate with anyone who shares that memory.
I also thought of TheElementalSource(.com) or TheElementalNexus.(com)

They are a bit more straight-laced, names that could actually exist in the game. Either would be good for a fan-site, if you ask me and easy to remember (that's important!).

I'm glad if I can be of some help!

Not bad. I first considered MastersofMagic.com for the same reason an ElementalMasters.com as a secondary. I would like to stay away from planet, vault, source, nexus, and other "brand" names to be honest. SD has business relations with some companies behind such names and consequently us using such names would likely cause issues for SD.

elementalfanatics.com would be a good choice, imho. It is informative, easy to remember.

ewom.com (not ewok :P ) would be just too cryptic.

everything with "notmom" would be hard to remmeber for anyone thaht don't know Master of Magic.

Simlicity is win!

Hey Spartan, I am working on an Elemental fansite too, i'm still working on the code and design and i hope we will cooperate! :)

Sure lets work on one really nice one together if you are interested.

Also for the rest of you that to work on things please go to my mod project site modcraft.net and sign up on the forums then go to the Elemental category and make a post in the welcome thread so I know for sure who is on board with the project.

ElementalFanatics.com would cause me to assume the site is associated with CivFanatics.com, one of the two largest Civilization fansites. Unless Spartan also happens to be Thunderfall, we may want to avoid this.

I agree that anything with planet-, -source, -vault, etc. would be too similar to established gaming networks. What about ElementalShard.com? We know we're getting shards, we know they're elemental, and I don't think there's any "Shard Gaming Network" out there.

I agree on elementalfanatics.com- too close to civfanatics.com

I really like shardsofelemental.com .  Elementalshard.com would work, too, but some people might think it's Elementals Hard.  We'd have to make sure it was capitalized, so www.ElementalShard.com .

Other ideas I have:

*ShardSeekers.com

*ElementalChannelers.com

*6elements.com or elements6.com  (there are technically 5, but since life/death are on opposite ends, it's like there are really 6)

I haven't checked to see if any of these are already registered, though.

I still prefer elementsofanotherage.com If you look closely and leave out the Os, you can also read it as "elements fan the rage" which I find hilarious.

One key element of any game is the player. And this game it could be argued is the dawn to a new age of awesome.
