1. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness
  2. There is no cure for glaucoma—yet
  3. Everyone is at risk
  4. There may be no symptoms

I found out yesterday I have it....the 40+ years of smoking did not help any. The thing is, have your eyes checked at least once a year, even if you do not need glasses, and you are not *old*.

I am now on eye drops in the a.m. and the evening.....in a month or two I will have laser surgery to open a hole someplace in my eyes for drainage. I have what is called "closed angle glaucoma".  WEll enough about me!!

Ok, now get out there and get your eyes checked everyone!!!!! B)

thanks for the reminder teddy.....had them checked, once, in 2002....time for a visit....been slack... :-|

sorry you've been diagnosed with it....but glad you're on top of it..... :)

Sorry, but I just can't see that.

In fact, without the screening, that's what you'll be saying. And it won't be a joke.

So get off your duffs and get it done. Once a year.

GO!

There was a lecture at the university. the lecturer asked 'how many do it every day?'. then twice a week. then twice a month. then finally 'how many twice a year?'.

There were two hands raised. The lecturer asked, "Why are you smiling, sir?"

The answer was, "Tonite! Tonite!"

Uh oh....we were talking about glaucoma screening? 8|

Me? Personally? LOL...  o_O

Depends on the state (LOL...HIGH)...

The patient would need a Certificate og Medical Necessity from a physician. Or the FAA/NASA.

My eyes went a bit wonky after my surgery a couple of months ago.  I'm told it could be some meds I'm taking.  I need a check too because everything is blurry again.  I just had new glasses a year ago.  Watch me get new glasses and then they change my meds and the eyes change again.  Wait this is a post for the Murphy's Law thread.

You take care Barb and do as your told.  My thoughts are with you.

Angus is correct; diabetics are STRONGLY encouraged to have annual eye exams for this reason. (My wife has Type-2 diabetes.)

No. This is OT in a big way, and I'll probably start a "drug war" exchange, but. . . even in places like California, where state law permits the use of medical marijuana with a doctor's prescription, it is still illegal under federal law to possess or distribute marijuana. It is a Schedule IV narcotic under the Controlled Substances Act and the DEA continues to enforce this law; as is the case with all such legal conflicts, federal law preempts state law in cases where the latter is more restrictive than the former.

Anyway. . . everyone needs to go get his/her eyes checked, as the OP said!!

You are 100% correct. Usually the Feds don't make a biggie out of it. In SF, I passed people smoking MJ openly in the streets...and saw the Police pass them by also. Guess they really don't care about that.

I also agree it's OT....My answer to Zu's question was more on the order of a chuckle with the FAA and NASA references...and I figure tbc will forgive me my trespasses as long as I buy the zebra striped tin foil pants with the green day-glo duct tape from her on-line store.

;)

I get mine checked every 2 years. except for this past year as I have cateracts(hope thats spelled right).  Now its every 6 months.  Waiting for the right eye to get worse then my insurance will cover 1/2 the cost of lasik.  Am sorry to hear that  Barb.

Good to hear you do Mike...... Sad when you have to let something get worse before it is even partially covered by insurance....but then, over 1/2 the people in our *great nation* don't have any ( I am one of those silly people) ....But I willhave my surgery, just as soon as DrJ buys those fancy z pants!!!!

Cataracts: (from mrcophth.com)

Cataract as a name is of comparatively recent origin. It arose out of medieval Latin translations of Arabic writings and was a sort of shorthand term for expressing the pathology of the condition -- humour that flowed down into the eye. The older Latin name was suffusio and the Greek name, hypochyma, both having the same humoral implication; but these names were not revived to any extent when, with the Renaissance, men turned from translations from the Arabic to the original classical sources.

Hi Barb I’m Don, there now we’re not strangers. I know this isn’t a very trendy thing to say but I’m not a very trendy kind of guy so it works out. Just wanted to say I’m sorry to hear your bad news and you’re in my prayers.

A very trendy thing to say Don.  It can but doesn't have to be religious, only from one heart to another.  So yes I'll hold you in my thoughts and prayers also Barb.<3

Too late I already said one and I certainly hope I didn’t make you feel self conscience by using a larger font, to me it’s just as easy to use a large font as the tiny one most forums seem to favor. I was born with a detached retina in one eye and have astigmatism in the other so it doesn’t hurt my feelings a bit when people go with the larger ones.

I got over who has a bigger one a long time ago.:-"
