What is the best Backup Prog to get ?

Ok, guys and gals ...  a little conundrum for y'all !!

I have a new Acer PC ... :grin: Pleased as punch with it .. Vista Home Premium .... ( couldn't afford Ultimate ..)

I am looking for a Downloadable FREE Backup prog so that I can , of course , do a full backup of my system ... progs , windows , et.al .... Reason being that the one that came with the PC is unintelligible ...  and has a pretty awful interface ..

Hence my post ... I have used Nero ( on XP) but I have heard that Nero and Vista do not play well together ..

So that's it ...

In one question ...

Depends...if it's to an external drive it's regulated by your connection more than the software. Internal drive to Internal drive is very fast. I don't use compression so I'm not sure if there's a performance hit for that.

Ah .. that's interesting to know ...  I do have an external 500Gb Maxtor ... I am not too sure what you mean by Compression ... is it Zip files  :maybe:

Ahhh.... well thanks for the info , mate .. I appreciate ya popping in ... I will try the Cobian first thing tomorrow ..I will keep you posted as to how I get on !!

The latest versions (8.0+) should work fine on Vista.  However, I recommend spending some money and getting a real good backup program.

Either Acronis True Image or Genie-Soft Backup Manager.

Well , Thanks Jafo  !! I went for Genie -Soft backup manager ..here in the UK it was £35

Complete System Backup and verify in 43 minutes,39 seconds ... all my media , extra apps like OD etc, DS , 24 .6 gb ~ all to my external Maxtor  HD !

Most excellent ...!!  ~ ~ ( and that was the Trial before you buy , too ...)

and another thing , the online tuts were very informative ... and easy to understand ...

Lantec, it was as you said .. Cobian  .. 1hr 27 minutes ...

Acronis True Image is a great imaging program that can really save your bacon.

A simple BU program called Second Copy has worked great for me for years.

My desktop just totally died and I was able to completely restore it with ShadowProtect Desktop Edition. It wasn't cheap but it was worth every penny. Top choice by CNET. I also use SeondCopy to backup personal files to an external drive. Don't try doing back-ups on the cheap. It's not worth it....speaking as someone who's lost more than 1TB of data to a dead external drive.,,,more than once. External hard drives have nosedived in price. I now backup everything I don't want to lose to at least 2 external drives.
