Resources

I play this game casually, and I play on Normal difficulty. When I play I try to aggresively take resources, as I believe they are the key to the game. However I notice that in long games I see NEW resources popping up. Unacceptable..I work hard in the begining of the game to get the upperhand on my opponents by sacraficing things and gambling on certain decisions to get these commodities. Howver all this work is RUINED in the late game when i see 5 new resources just pop up out of nowhere..and by this time constructors can be cranked out in 2 turns and travel fast..so unless they happen to pop up near me I can't get to them.

Seriously this is just a stupid stupid stupid problem, and its almost made me stop playing this game. Resources should be fought over heavily, but what is the point when I know new ones are just going to appear out of no-where. A new resource should be an important event, not some random thing.

I guess it all depends on the back story regarding resources. If they're an old Precursor artifact, what then makes them pop out of nowhere?

Maybe they slipped in through a wormhole? If that's the case, and it's within sensor range, then yes I agree with you. Maybe a pop-up is in order to let you know.

If you play to be a resource mogul...you may want to have a constructor camped in each sector, or near a starbase in wait.

Then again, you could just attack whoever gets there first...Or win the starbase through diplomacy, trade, threats, etc. C'MON!!! GET INTERESTING!!! Play the human race, now obsessing over Pre-Cursor artifacts believing it to be the key to galaxy domination!!!

I've never seen a resource pop out of nowhere. Are you sure it wasn't taken by one computer player (and hence invisible on the small map unless you have a starship nearby) and the starbase subsequentally destroyed by another AI (making the resource "appear" again on the small map)?

Anyway; it's not that hard to steal resources from the AI's. A couple of ways are suggested on the strategy forum:

- Brute force. If you do it quick and sue for peace directly you can steal a resource from a superior AI. They don't seem to hold grudges :-)

- Stealth. Place a few destroyers next to a resource starbase owned by AI-1. Ask AI-2 to start a war against AI-1 and give him the strategically placed destroyers as part of your offer. He will most likely destroy the offending starbase, allowing your strategically placed constructor to zip in an quickly build up a starbase of your own.

This is a known user interface flaw. If you have discovered an unoccupied resource, it appears on the mini-map with an 'x'. If the resource is occupied, and not within your sensor range, it disappears from the mini-map. If the resource is occupied, and in your sensor range, you can see the starbase if you have the "show ships" minimap button selected. If the resource becomes unoccupied due to war or elimination of a player, then the 'x' again shows up on the minimap, even if it is not within your sensor range.

Really, there should be a "resource summary screen" and "starbase summary screen". I keep track of resource locations in a notepad file for this reason.

I almost 100% positive that I've seen new resources apear in late games.

#3 brought up an interesting point but when I see like 5 new resources apear on the same turn, in a region thats not being contested than I somehow have to doubt that 5 SBs were destroyed simaltaniously.
