OT: Any of yous just finish watching the new episode of Enterprise?

i just finished watching it about half an hour a go. What did you think of i think it was a good episode ;)
You know what i have noticed....of coarse not i'm strangly perseptive of stuff. Each new series of star trek is getting more and more daring(for lack of a better word) for what they put in it. like TOS well that was the 60s back them alot of that was daring, this frist ever interacial kiss to be put on tv was Kirk and Uhora(sp?). i dont want to get into texapeles for every series but think about it for a minute.

I found it to be a rather pathetic attempt to try to gain better quotes by putting in some nudity. I'm assuming you speak about the episode "Bounty". The most part of that movie could have been out of a cheap porno flick.

I find them less and less daring, less willing to put real drama on a show. Firefly was daring in its portrayal of real character motivation. It got cancelled. It rocked.

Yep, Firefly was the best sci-fi space opera on T.V. and Fox just let it die so they could push the brain dead Miami Vice remake, Fastlane, onto teenagers :sniff!:

I'd love to see Joss get someone else to pick it up but that would require some exec with a brain.

One thing that always bugs me about Star Trek (as opposed to say Babylon5) is that each episode tidily addresses all the issues and ends in a nice, orderly, and happy fashion.

I've liked many of episodes of Enterprise, as many of them are trending towards not-so-happy endings, or at least endings that aren't quite so antiseptic. But the last few have been dissapointments.

The Borg episode was pretty lame and felt rushed. Contrived and predictable. I would have preferred they expanded a bit more on the episode with the automated repair station rebuilding itself after its destruction.

And this last one, Bounty, was especially annoying. It was meant as a ratings catcher, but I found it to be a bit of a waste of time. Predicatable, contrived, and nicely tidied up in the end.

I would really like to see the series become a bit more fluid through the episodes, much more like B5 was.

I kind of liked the Borg one, for what it was 1 hour.
Surprised they did not try to exploit it by making it a season ending cliffhanger. I liked that he spaced the Borg. In lots of ways I like it better than some of the other spinofs (I think the charactors are better developed and less, well star trek like) :)

I still miss B5 though. >:(

How bout this?

How bout just stating facts.

Enterprise is just not a good show. It did have potential though.

Firefly was a great show.

Enterprise is the worst Star Trek series of the bunch.

This last episode was ok. They didn't get the hottie on the cast for nothing you know. I prefer the more cerebral episodes myself though. Ones that break Sci-Fi ground. It seemslike thats harder to do these days though.

Vespasian,

Why do you think Enterprise is the worst of the ST bunch? I've been pretty jaded with the franchise after the Next Generation ended, but this one seems to have a little more quality to it. Not that we have much to choose from nowadays....

I watched most of the 1st season of Enterprise, but I just couldn't get interested enough in the characters or stories to continue watching.

One of the things that really turned me off was that episode with the Ferengi. The show's writers have all these cool alien races to choose from for their episodes, and they choose one that the Federation won't make first contact with for another 200 years. Why, because people like the Ferengi, and it will draw viewers. Talk about stretching continuity for the sake of ratings. :p

Come on people....Farscape was the most entertaining SciFi show ever, and it got axed cause the head of USA networks doesn't like shows that even hint at being anti establishmentary. Oppss....I was about to go of on a political/social dialog about the ramifacations of Mind Control in America...Glad I caught myself.

01Anxiety,

I've had a hard time with the show from beginning. The whole concept behind the show, went against the entire Star Trek continuity that was setup since the original ST, TNG, and DS9.

But as far as the show itself, ive found most episodes to be mediocre at best. And the fact that they seem to be unable to stop bringing popular alien races into episodes. Borg, Ferengi, etc. Half of these alien races were supposivily never discovered until after Archer was even born. At least according to all the other Star trek movies and tv shows, who by the way, never mentioned an Archer existing or another ship being called Enterprise being around before Kirk's ship.

Another vote for Firefly.

This weeks TV guide had a preview of what is coming next year:

1) a new race Xingli (sp) attacks and destroys major earth population - Borg implications of technical superiority
2) Trip's sister is killed - he turns into a vengance seeking hard-ass
3) The Enterprise goes after these guys into a far quadrant
4) Tpal goes with them, voluntarily quitting the Vulcan High Command
5) New Space Academy recruits goes with them - a space SEALs-XFL type

The show producers know they need to up the ante and avoid predictabily. They've used sex to fill the gap (temporarily I hope!)

I like the new charactors, best since the Next Generation. The in-between I've not really followed or cared for.

I like Smallville better.

Vespasian,

I think we're on the same page, what with the introducing of familiar, if not non-sequitor, characters. I got a charge out of the Andorians, but they didn't do much with them save for one or two episodes. Then they started introducing the regulars (Klingon, Ferenghi, ...) and the generics (wrinkled nose person #1, ribbed nose person #2, ...)

What I do like is the limited technology aspect and central characters that are less "perfect" than the same in Voyager or DS9. There's a little more depth than in previous series, but not a tremendous amount. Phase cannons as a good example of a technology that is new and somewhat cumbersome (and weak) to use. Although in the last few episodes, the Enterprise seemed to be able to use them without all the previous effort. Corner cutting from the producers no doubt.

I try not to take this stuff too seriously, but with the deficit of this type of series, there's not much to take its place.

I watched it (by pure chance, so I'm surprised to see this thread) and it was alright. Star Trek is always a mixed bag of attempts to be 'realistic' or at least convincing, some contrived drama, and some crazy space stuff. TNG was fantastic fun, but face it, some of the episodes were ridiculous! The 'Die Hard Picard' episode (Starship Mine), for instance, is highly unbelievable, but we get to see Patrick Stewart killing bad guys with a crossbow. COOL. On the other hand, some were fantastic, and even demonstrated principles of space travel/science at times.

I didn't know they brought the Borg and Ferengi into Enterprise. They should be concentrating on the Klingons and the Vulcans...especially the Vulcans, who have been neglected since the original series of movies. There's more than just logic and sudden urges to mate with everything on the ship.

Rick Berman is different than Gene Roddenberry, but there's no denying that he's a very successful businessman. :)

"One thing that always bugs me about Star Trek (as opposed to say Babylon5) is that each episode tidily addresses all the issues and ends in a nice, orderly, and happy fashion."

ds9 kicked butt

had a harder, grittier edge, continuing story lines and well developed characters and relationships.

"There's a little more depth than in previous series..."
i could not disagree more. maybe because ds9 had multi-season story arcs with an intersting environment/local area and evolving relationshhips, shifting alliances etc. while enterprise has been on a much shorter time. generally, all the series had bad first one or two seasons. (voyager's lasted much longer though)

Wow, I'm surprised other people actually got to see Firefly since it got canned so quickly. My father and I both really liked that show for the...what, 8 episodes it had? It had alot of potential, though it had an obviously low budget for some episodes.

Er, sorry, couldn't be bothered to read all the other posts, but as a non-Kligon-speakier and in response to the first few posts....

I like the "Enterprise" series for its characters and its premise. I'm happy to see a SciFi series making some kind of dent in prime time TV. I would be sorry to see it "sell out" to its writers by pushing events and races that don't make sense in the UFP (OK, maybe I'm a little geeky!) timeline because obviously the hardcore fans will rapidly lose interest if they blow it. I think Andromeda faces similar challenges.

Having said that, everyone should realize that no matter what the world-according-to-you (and me!) says, any serial show loses viewers (and thus odds of staying on the air) as it becomes more timeline-specific. So, while you personally may love the twists and turns a show makes, they actually make it less likely that a show will return for a new season. :(

Star Trek was a great show because of, not in spite of, its inconsistencies.

Im going through this out there.

The last two season of DS9 were (IMO), the best Star Trek episodes to ever be put out.

They put the ds9 on five nites a week here awhile back and I got a chance to watch the in order again, it was nice...The would never give them a movie script though, too bad.

smok-n-joe i cant think of an resion to give DS9 a moive though thats not as cheesy as how Worf showed up in Inserection and Nemisis (well Nemisises resion wasnt that bad). Same with Voyager ok they got home whats next hmm they get lost again? IF they make another trek movie it would be Enterprise to get it i think so it wount be for a while. The only thing i can think of for a DS9 movie is Sisko come back after a year or 2 of being with the profits and tell them that an Intergalactic race of Badasses areon there way to this galaxy and only the profits can save them. IMO that wount make that good of a movie.

I just mean that good sci fi is easier to write a movie for than scifi that has been overdone like most of the trek series has. DS9 has more possibilities. The left the end wide open for something.

well imho Enterprise should have focused more onto the things leading up to the Earth-Romulan war.

Focusing on the Andorians and Vulcans mainly as they were both founders of the UFP, the first episode was a dissapointment also breaking the timeline just so they could show a popular race(klingons) is pathetic, as was the first meeting with the romulans, as they werent supposed to have warpdrive.

+ the main weapons were supposed to be nuclear/fusion warheads not phase cannons.

all in all the producers took the easy road, but didnt check to see that there is a pit fall a short while down the road.

because without an Earth - Romulan war, they cant justify the founding of the UFP, simply because the vulcans wouldnt gain respect for the humans, as the vulcans had supposedly been fighting the romulans on and off for centuries and the earth forces defeat them in 2 years or so, which is a lot quicker than the vulcans ever had.

as for the comparison between startrek and babylon 5, is that B5 had a clearly defined plot whereas ST tends to be made up as it goes, B5's entire plot was already planned b4 the first episode aired on TV. which meant that they could afford to leave a lot more loose ends, other than the fact that it is more heavily driven on motives and possiblities.

also another thing about ST is that most episodes are the same sort of plot with a new skin attatched to it.
