To jailbreak or not...that is the question!

I have a shiny new iPhone3g. It does some stuff really well. It does some other things very poorly.

On the one hand...there are a bunch of really nice aps and customizations I could use if I jailbreak it. Things I would truly use and appreciate. And I've never been real afraid of modding and tweaking and diving into beta software.

On the other hand...it voids my warranty and I believe once I jailbreak it I can't "UnJailbreaak" it. Some of the aps may be buggy. (But couldn't be much worse than 2.1)  And it may introduce other "deeper" problems.

So I'd value your opinions. Yes, Jailbreak it. Or No, play it safe.

Have any of you jailbroken your iphone? Did you find it helpful or hurtful?

Thanks...

Hmmm, or the other option is go to Apple and see if they have a 'fix'.

If not, it would make a nice present for someone, and then you go buy something that works.  :O

i've never jailbroken my touch but a friend has done it to hers. she has to restore it before upgrading her firmware each time. i've been told she loses all her data when she restores it.

When confronted with such problems I ask myself 2 questions and make 1 comparison:

What could go right?  In this instance, I could try out some unsupported aps. (yawn) (so what, probably hyped junk anyway)

What could go wrong? Hmmm lot's.  Unsupported software might introduce viruses or security problems.  Voids getting support and updates from Apple when the need arises.

To me it seems the risks are much greater than any possible benefits.

I was mistaken. After further investigation I discovered that it is entirely possible to go back to the original setup. Thanks for your insight everyone.
