GCII - Espionage in a more Customizable Galaxy

GCII - Espionage in a more Customizable Galaxy

- A further look into Version 2.0 -

Continuing our in-depth look at 2.0 brings us to the new Galaxy Setup options, as well as the Espionage changes people have been looking for. Again, as with all new things in 2.0, we aren't looking to revolutionize, just to bring these features to a natural completion before work on GCIII begins (which is still a way off, but still looming).

New Galaxy Options

As Brad (Frogboy/Draginol) pointed out in his official Preview of 2.0, we've gone in and added some options for the Placement of Special Environmental Worlds, as well as the Frequency of traditional Random Events.

When the Environmental Worlds option is cranked up, approximately 75% of the galaxy's habitable worlds will be of an Extreme class (Toxic, Aquatic, etc). This is a great way to play if you like a long, drawn out Exploration phase of the game. Placed at it's lowest setting, the galaxy will only have around 10% of habitable planets requiring special technologies to inhabit, making the Colony rush closer to Dreadlords, but keeping those technologies somewhat vital.

The Random Events setting works in a similar fashion. You can turn them off entirely, or you can set them to happen around 4 times more frequently. This results in a fairly hectic game, where you're never quite sure of your galactic footing.

Espionage

Changed back in the first 'Dark Avatar' expansion, the new Espionage system enjoyed a love/hate relationship with the players. Some people liked the new options, allowing the placing spys to strategically disable an enemies infrastructure. Other players disliked being forced to perform blatantly offensive maneuvers to gain higher levels of intelligence on their neighbors.

The new system adds 'Empire Wide' spying option to your 'Espionage Details' screen. Here you can place permanent spys on a race, which will gather up information and raise your 'Espionage Level' and unlock more information on them. These spys ONLY gather information (passive in nature), cannot be nullified, and dictate the espionage level that you can reach.

Spys placed on planets will also gather information on a race, but at 1/3 the rate.

We've also added the ability to spy on Minor races. Yahoo!

The Beta Release

Like most things we do, Version 2.0 is going to have a Beta period starting (barring any major problems) next Wednesday, the 26th of September. For those not playing Mega Man 9 next week (which is what I'll be doing), you'll be able to try your hand at the update, playing with all these fresh new features and helping to ensure the game is still balanced (and stable). This will be released on Impulse, with the final version making it up onto Stardock Central as well.

Next Wedensday: We wrap up our 2.0 journals with some nice new Negotiation tweaks, Campaign updates, as well as all the dangling improvements that'll make 2.0 rock!

I have some questions about that...

What do you need to take one on a "test flight"?

Can you rent 1, I have one of those pesky reunions coming up.

I think pulling up in one of these would do just fine.

Does it come with a pilot? I wouldn't want to scratch the paint coming out of spacedock.

So far there have been three attempts to informally schedule 'test flights'. These coincided with similarly unscheduled tests, for marketing purposes, of the Dirac nine targetting computers and the supercharged dilithium foci test of the central doom ray core system. While we feel that the high performance of these marketing tests speak well for the high quality and craftsmanship of these fine and well maintained Ranger class vessels, Commodore J'nan feels strongly that the antique nature of these vessels, the youngest of which is older than the dreadlord/arnor conflict, would render our allowing casual test flights of these to be lacking in the respect owed the fine craftsmen that built them.

Accordingly, no formal mechanism for scheduling 'test flights' has been put in place, although the Commodore happily encourages informal, friendly attempts to do so, as Admiral Tokas, late of the Drengin Imperial Navy, would surely attest should sufficient portions of his molecular structure be separated from the expanding vapor of the Dreadnought Chartung for deathscans to be effective.

There is a substantial deposit required.

Anyone wishing to purchase or rent one of these fine antiques should acquire an experienced shipmaster and crew for handling the day to day operations of a vessel of this type. The Commodore is particularly effusive in praising veterans of the Psilon Deep Space Survey as being quite capable of handling the occasionally strange logic with which the Arnorians designed certain portions of the ship, as well as having the sense of humor for dealing with Arnorian Artificial Intelligences which are themselves known for having personalities best described as . . . quirky.

Although it should be noted the Commodore, being just such a veteran, may be biased in his opinions.

As always, Thank You for your interest in our product line.

So, it's Wednesday - I guess you had a major problem?

Maybe someone stole those focusing crystals and laser fuses that you pulled out of your Precursor Rangers and built their own Doom Ray, then nuked Plymouth Michigan with it.

You really should keep tighter security around those things J'nan, I mean, they might steal the whole thing next time, Corinthian Leather (TM) interior and all!  Can you imagine what they would do with one of those?

They normally release around 6pm EST or so.

Alas, Doom Rays are no use for orbital bombardment...

Who said anything about 'from orbit'?  Prop that sucker up on a building out of town, point and click...

Afraid so...we should be good for tomorrow but there were some server issues that are still being resolved :(  Sorry gang.

Awww.  But I've learned a long time ago to not expect your betas on time. O:)   That's not an angry dig at you, I still <3 Stardock more than any other game company.  You guys just always seem to have an issue coming up that pushes release of a beta patch of the major kind back a day or so.

Such is the business when working with computers, which, while they do not do anything you don't "tell" them to do, thier language for interpreting simple instructions often translates that into "crash and burn".

Still looking forward to that update, SD!

You could always add an extra week to your expected release date, so that you're never late, but occasionally early. It would only be a PR trick, but hey - we'd all be happy!

I don't think I'm alone when I say that this one day delay of the 2.0 beta is, by far, the worst thing that has ever happened in the history of the universe!

Great ideas.  LOVE THEM.  But one thing.  I think one should be able to nullify a passive spy by some random means.  Say if you have a high level of intel on them, you get a ~5% chance per tern of nullifying one of their agents.  maybe make it so a medium is 5%, and high is 10% and whatever is over that is like 20% or somthing along those lines.  Mess with the numbers keep the idea ;-)  this could also add strategic depth because if your spys are being nullified you know your getting spyed on heavily and you can return the favor.

also your espianage level should decres slowly over time if your agents have been nullified to some bass level.  (this may already be the case, idk)

I didnt read the whole 60+ responces so if this has already been talked about.  I ditto whoever said it first.

Good idea :)  I hate having to dump bad news on you guys...this way we'd only have to dump good news on you, which isn't so much dumping as it is bestowing.

That said, no 2.0 until next year! ;)

OH NOZ

In all seriousness, what makes it awful is this is another day I have to wait before starting my new Galactic Xbox Humongous sized game.

I'll settle for just a journal update, even if the beta isn't yet available.

I have also noticed the trend toward "it'll be ready by X" and "X" is better described as "X + 1" (or 2 if it's late at night).  I'd have to give Boogie a huge kudos for posting that there is a delay.  Being an community-driven company, it's pretty easy to shout out an update, even if it's "something broke last minute- update you later".  Much appreciated!

Really looking forward to hearing about those other tweaks!

Next week - you mean, right?

PS; It's okay... since most of CoSH version 05-B is ready when you are. Besides, i'm up for a surgery to my left hand (Depuytren 'fiber tendons' extraction) in about two weeks and that will result in half-effectiveness on keyboard for nearly six months. Then, i'm also scheduled for Carpal tunnel syndrome for that same arm wrist too.

One may say, i'll feel like a Borg :borg: for awhile being fitted with some orthopedic device with screws all over & bigger than a boxing glove. Now, try wearing a winter coat with something like that.

I guess, i can always wait for 2.0 and everything else. While trying to figure out a way to qwerty hits only with five fingers on the right (when off the mouse clicks). Thumbing my mood straight to the left in knee deep snow storms.

Bof, with the number of ships planned to be designed for X-Worlds - next year feels more like tomorrow.

Nnnooooooooooooo .... :P

Well, at least you tell us that you have problem and that it could ne longer. I also remember that you made a pool for taking more time for TotA instead of releasing it not ready. I wish other companies would be like that. There is/was one (I won't name it) that said that a patch would come at a named month and it didn't. But instead to telling us what the problem is or that they have problems they felt silence just like they have never said anything like that.

Back to Topic:

I love the idea of this system, just one question. How will you handle the proble with running out of spyies? - I run out of them once (I spend as much GC as I could), because the enemy build them somehow faster as I did. (Acctually they are 3 enemies with weaker eco)

After reading in this thread, I'm thinking is this official and final change regarding espionage? And so, if you think about it, it's really not a change is it? All they did is gave us the option of spying the "old" way which we had before or the "new" way by placing spies on tiles? Oh and a few bonuses ..... but really, why did they keep this so secret and why did i work so hard to give them ideas that will have significant changes and makes espionage really interesting?! Am I missing something, if so please someone enlighten me.

Are any of these negotiation tweeks going to make it to DA 2.0?

As far as I know only the Mind-Control Center and Esipionage tweaks are being backported to DA.  If boogie wants to come in here and tell me I'm wrong and horrid for giving you wrong information he's welcome to.

...Especially if he comes in to tell us the patch is ready for download when I get home from work.
