Thinking about Buying OD Plus...

Some initial questions first

Hi,

A while ago, I saw a MAC computer and I loved their dock they had, I almost ate my words and considered buying a MAC just for those graphic based docks of theirs! ::shuddering:: lol. Anyhow, I Googled it and found RocketDock. Please don't stone me! But then, accidentally, I spotted Stardock's OD listed with my other Stardock programs. Now I have some questions to ask as I would prefer to use Stardock's so that everything meshes together without conflicts.

Ok, here comes the newbie questions that I can't find answered elsewhere.

1. I want it to look like MAC's dock, where the icons seem to be sitting on a shelf. Is this possible with OD+ ?

2. When I make a folder for OD, when I click on it and it should show me all the icons for programs inside, can I chose to have it fan out like MAC? If so, how many icons will it show? RocketDock has a Docklet that makes this happen and the directions said it worked on OD too but I wanted to make sure as I love that feature.

3. Would an icon work on the dock, which I have in my Windows Quicklaunch Toolbar but it doesn't work in RocketDock and was hoping OD would.. I have the icon set up wiht a different than normal Target in the Properties , set to open my Explorer and open certain folders automatically when I click on it. Here is the target line:

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\AOL 9.0\download

Would that work in OD plus?

4. Is there any other benefits of paying for Stardock's OD plus rather than what I am getting using RocketDock?

Thank you SO much for any help anyone can give me. I do so want to use OD but I don't have a lot of money to spend so it would have to be worth changing for. I tried to find the info on Stardock's site but I felt the description didn't really answer these kinds of questions.

1. See these skins from my gallery as they may be something like what you want: icons
leopard docks
black leopard docks
2. stacks docklet
3. It seems as though it should work...
4. Benefits... hmm, let me see; tabbed docks, multiple docks per screen, custom flyout menus, and on, and on...

In short, yes-- I would definitely invest in OD+. You will not regret it. :)

OD and OD+ are simply wonderful!
I can't recommend these programs highly enough to you. Perhaps you should also browse the Forum about OD and OD+.
Even better, email WebGizmos! Mirsguy's post just above this one should also steer you to some very pretty dock skins.

Good answers to sharxxxoo's questions, guys!
Some Karma to all.

SharXXXOO, I found the thread I believe might help you make up your mind about OD/OD+:

WWW Link

You can always download OD free copy at Stardock.com and skin it to your liking, but OD+ is a much more muscular app and will give you far more organization options.

Hope this helps! ;)

I have OD+ and love it.  But if I want a machine to look like a Mac, I'll buy one.

I have to agree with WOM. There are so many themes in the Gallery Library that you should at least look at and even try.  ;)

No matter how close you get to looking like a Mac, it still won't be a Mac.  :SURPRISED:

You all are SOoOoOOOoo wonderful! Thank you ever so much. I'm going to buy it on your enthusiasm alone! But I most certainly will click on all the links too. I think the info I found on Stardock was just too generic and short, so I probably went to the wrong places.
Now, thanx to you all, I have great resources to check out.
Thank ALL of you for taking the time!!!
Oh, now, could you direct me to the tutorial that will show me how to make a WB skin in five steps or less? Are ya all dyin' and rollin' on the floor with that question? LOL, someday, SOME day I do hope to learn how to make them as I love graphics and love dabbling but when I look at some tuts that I've seen I think I'd be way out of my league to even attempt it.
You're dears!

Hey, if you love graphics and love to dabble, then go for it! :D I have not yet released my first WB--it is 2 months in the making--but I can tell you this; just jump into Skin Studio and don't worry about tuts. If you hit a brick wall, search the forums or post a question. And most of all, HAVE FUN!

Glad to hear that you went and got OD+ too, btw. :CONGRAT:

WHAT!?!?!? I'm still looking for the one that explains it in 100 steps or less!

Ok, I would ordinarily apologize for not finishing this thread as I started it. HOWEVER, YOU ALL ARE IN BIG BIG TROUBLE! ::hands on hips & tapping foot:: Not one of you warned me, not one of you looked out for my best interest or at least asked me if I had little or maybe no willpower! The first night after copying all your answers, I downloaded and installed OD +. I did this two hours before I was to start my online tech job! Was I nutz? Wait, don't answer that... It was impossible for me to work SOoOOoOOoo, I went back a year in my tech logs, and grabbed an old one and had to take a half hour to go through it and change the date from 2007 to 2008 after all the entries and submit it to my supervisor as if I had maybe actually put down my new toy, THAT YOU ALL PUSHED ME INTO, as if I had really done a shift that night!::sobbing:: I've never done that before. Ok, maybe once or twice.
I took 10 hours the first night 'playing' with OD+. Wait, it gets worse. The next day my eyes were almost glued shut from overusing them, but did that stop me? NoOOoOOoo! I now direct my accusatory gaze at Mirsguy. I made the mistake of looking for your stuff and I was only going to spend a half hour at the max. Yeah, right. :::sobbing again::: I spent another 8.5 hours just downloading backgrounds! I have yet to open them, I slept in til 2pm since I was up til 6am this morning doing this. So now, being the retentive person that I am, I have to open all the downloads and then of course install them.
But in your defense, I am saying for the world to hear, "OD+ RULES!!!!!" No comparison to RocketDock and I am sorry that I even brought that question up as it's like comparing oranges and apples but I was green and naive, I hope you all can forgive me for my ignorance. :::stubbing toe into ground:::Now, I have to try to find an OD+ dictionary so I truly know the difference between backgrounds, tiles, bars and the like as I'm still fuzzy on that. And what the heck is a zoomer? lol And I discovered that all my colorized bars I had made for RocketDock are totally useless for OD+ and after seeing what is involved in making them for OD+, I doubt I'll ever try, lol. Ok, maybe I will if I ever get bored playing with what OD+ includes!
Ok, I'm going to risk this.. and ask a question I can't find the answer to yet.. I noticed that there are a lot of choices in the Appearance and I found where they are all located but I also noticed that many aren't showing for my choices. I see that there are many folders for the distinctive ways to display the icons too. Is it safe to delete any of them? I know for sure that I won't be using the bars that look just like a flat background just standing up, I love the MAC Leopard look too much where the icons look like they're standing up, or the tile format ones, so would it be ok to lighten the load and delete the ones that won't work for me? Or should I keep my grimy little hands off of them? If I load too many in, as I love decorating and having tons of choices, will it slow down OD+'s fast performance?
Ok, I truly do love you guys, I just had to blame my probable future dismisal of my job on someone! (Maybe I should just show my boss OD+ and get HIM addicted too? Hmmmm)But getting fired is ok too, as that will gimme more time to play.
Thank you ALL so very much for taking the time and effort and giving me such terrific advice!!
Shar***
And yes, Mirsguy, you being my biggest offender, lol, I luvs ya and I will try to do a WB, I know I will! Maybe I'll start with OD+, to get the 'feel' as I am learning some different techniques on making icons and I love doing that too. Have a lot mroe to learn but that is what I love to do, gain knowledge for graphic thingies!

Mirsguy twiddles thumbs, looks listlessly from side to side and whistles.
The next day my eyes were almost glued shut from overusing them

I hate it when that happens!

Mirsguy whips out mirror, deflects gaze and defies responsibility.
And what the heck is a zoomer?

Zoomers are regular docks. Not sure exactly why their named as such. As far as pruning down your library--there are many backgrounds and icons that I knew I would never use, so I skinnied down my library and just got rid of them. No use keeping stuff that I'll never apply, in my opinion.
And yes, Mirsguy, you being my biggest offender, lol, I luvs ya

I love you too, man!

Mirsguy receives great satisfaction for turning another pc user to ObjectDock+.

Because when you hover over an icon, it zooms in, showing a huge icon.

I figured as much; however tiles do this as well. Does that mean that tiles are zoomers too? :NOTSURE:

LOL, you're all rotten! I didn't hear one person offering to make a casserole or somethin' so I wouldn't have to take five wasted minutes away from OD+ to eat! I was thinkin' about moving the bathroom closer to my desk tho....
I thank you all again, you have great senses of humor too! I'm just glad I wear waterproof mascara for no one taking responsibility for my lack of!
I'll try to figure the rest out myself, but ya never know, I just might be back!
Muhahahahhaha...

PS, messiah1, if that's how you lose points, I must be in the negatives, BIG time by now!
(I'm desperately trying to gain some sympathy here, but I'm just not feelin' it...)
It's ok, I'm used to abuse! ::dabbing eyes:::

I have a question please? Are you all shivering? LOL, maybe you should be.
But I went thru the topics and couldn't find anything about this.
I tell ya, I have spent the last two days "weeding" out the backgrounds I'll never use.
I haven't worked this hard even for pay, in a long time! (Just don't tell my employer that)
I was hoping, that in that window where you select which background you want to use, you
would be able to select one you DIDN'T want, maybe RIGHT click on it and select delete so
it would not only remove the .pngs associated with it but the ini's too. Wouldn't that be a
great idea? I have almost pulled out all my hair matching things up to do this. NOT an easy feat considering many of the designers name them completely different things than what they show as and then when they have a lot of different choices in the same folder, it gets a bit maddening, lol. I'm laughing cuz I've lost my mind.
Most times, I LOVE what I see but I know I won't use the one dimensional background. I like the little independent tiles and the trays so I want to keep mainly just them. I think I might be adding another dock at the top, so for my really favorite ones, I will keep a few of them. So I don't want it to delete the entire folder with everything in it, just the parts I don't want. :::batting eyelashes::: Is that too much to even dream of?
SoOoOOooOOoo, is there a simpler way to do this? Or a place I could put my warped ideas for consideration?
I mean, duzn't that seem like an easy feature but yet so beneficial for the user at the same time?
Ok, I'll shut up now, but I truly would like to know if there is an answer to either one of those questions...
Thanx again!
AND thank you to all the wonderful, outstanding designers. YOU are responsible for all the beautiful backgrounds I downloaded so now have to pick thru them, lol.

Not really  (:(

Keep a few of the tabbed docks in your inventory...before long, you'll add more things to them and think to yourself "I really need another dock". That's where the tabbed docks come in.  ;) I have 6 of them on my desktop. One tab on each dock, so they pop out as drawers. Plus I have one zoomer on the bottom with all the stuff I use daily.

I honestly dont know what I'd do without docks.(icons on the desktop...Yuk!!)

Thank you for agreeing with me. I'm sorry I haven't been reading the posts, I had to go to the hospital. I OD'd on OD+!! NAH, just kidding!  but my eyeballs are screamin' and to have this feature would have helped me immensely. But I'm getting it done slowly and learning alot about it too, so it's not all for waste. But that feature would have made it a lot nicer.

I am keeping some of the tabbed and tops, as I am finding yet another guilty pleasure of not overcrowding my bottom dock and putting less used thing on the top which I auto-hide. I love it! Of course, I'm overloading the top one now, but eventually, I'll trim it down like I did the bottom one. Who knows, maybe use some side bars and tabs too!

Thank you very much for answering, muchly appreciated!  <3
