In this example I drew the figure on paper, the Lion-O's face.<Image 1
>, is possible don´t use this one. Now I begin to make layers(Ctrl+shift+N), and with the help of the (polygonal Lasso tool, that you can find press "L" in your key, or use it from tool bar), I select the contour and fill each layer with gradients, in the example the hair was the first<Image 2
> , I use gradients because it give soft edges. Each part in diferent layers,example: the nose is a different layer that the face, (I make all in differents layers). When I have all, hair, face, mouth,eyes....., ("important":all in differents layers)<Image 5
>, I begin with other steps, Lights, shadows, and details. All in differents layers(don't forget that), If your shadows and lights aren't perfect, no problem, It isn't important.<Image 6
>, because now I going to use other tool:The Gaussian Blur,(The rute is: Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur, (Note:I can use a "GB" of 0.5, for give soft edges to all), but the valor is more hight when I want smooth shadows and lights, <Image 7>. Now you look the finished shoulder<Image 7-8>,it's the same step that the hair, but if we want a good results, we need imagine where come the light and where is the shadow, you don't need be a master drawing, but you need basic concepts. well the other steps are the same using the(polygonal Lasso tool) and (Gaussian Blur), look the <Image 12
> the face is the same, I use sometimes down opacity,for best apparence (opacity is in the botoom bars of your right), It look complicated, but I can say that my technique is simple,because only I use few photoshop's tools. In the final<Image 22
>, I take the finished image in ".png" format, and open it in photoshop how a new file, and I select: distort (right click-free tansform, and again right click on the figure and select distort), I tried give other appearance with this tool, and the result is the final Image. Finally I use brightness/contrast (the rute is: image-adjustments-brightness/contrast) with the values: brightness=-21 and contrast=22 I hope that all my instructions can help you, I'm not expert in photoshop, but this is my form of use this software, I want know if my help is util for you, please comments.
