Hello there,

If you know me personally you will know me for my rants. If you know me only digitally you have not been exposed to one of my rants. I will demonstrate one of them for you now.

Holding the door; when did this become an offense to people?

Today I went for some coffee to start up my morning. A woman was walking behind me that I suspected was in her late 60s. I pulled the door open and stepped aside to let her in. She smiled at me and thanked me. It was simple and it was polite. Emboldened by this I tried to do the same when I left for a woman in her 30s. This time I got a "Huff" sound and a mean look. I was shocked enough that no sneering remark of my own came to mind. With a polite gesture I had labeled myself a sexist? In less than 5 minutes my day's great start went to craptastic.

I am all for women's rights. I enforce it even, dragging rules around demanding equal treatment. Here is a fact, I open doors for everyone, or do that stupid lean where you just push it open an extra foot by falling off balance in the maneuver I label "polite cltuz". I didn't do it because you are a woman, child, cripple, political leader, mime, puppy, or clone of Hitler himself. I just did it to be nice. Don't mistake my kindness for weakness though.

I see that woman again I'm holding the door only till she is in striking distance. There is my equal treatment.

I know what you mean. I work in an office where 90% of the employee's are women. Talk about walking on glass. I have to watch every word I say otherwise I will be shredded to pieces by a mob of women or will be the laughing stock for days to come.

I am very polite and do this like hold the door or elevator for both men and women. I always try to let the ladies be first in and first out because it's how I was raised. I like treating women good, makes me feel good as well and I figre they like it, but like you, I come across one here and there that sees my actions as some kind of insult to her femininehood.I don't care though, I did my part and if they don't like it, they can kiss my American born A$$.

I consider myself a feminist and have no problem with anyone, male or female, holding the door for me.  I think it's just common courtesy.  I would hold the door for someone regardless of whether they are a man or woman, especially if I saw them struggling with something.

I shut doors purposefully in front of all women I see. I am a Champion of a woman's right to open a door. Woman carrying a giant suitcase?
"Let me just shut that door for you."
"Oh thank you so much, how did you know I was a radical feminist?"

I hold the door open for guys though. They don't seem to have any problem with it. They even, sometimes, say "Thanks."

I am an equal opportunity door-holder-opener and appreciate when someone does the same for me. In fact, if I am struggling and you don't bother holding the door open for me, I'm probably going to say, "Thanks, asshole!"

I think it's common courtesy and not even a male/female issue.

Oh, I have seen that happen before and how funny it can be. It's even more funy when the guy being called an a$$hole actually hears it and feels like an idiot by the look on his face. Classic.

I didn't want to mention it, so as to not make any of you guys who I can't open doors for jealous.
