MP Etiquette?

Things that are just plain rude in MP

Here is a list of things that #$%$ me when playing MP as I consider them "rude". Feel free to pass comment or post your own issues - I would like to get something on a consensus from the community on what should or should not be done online.

1) The host quiting when he is loosing when they still have other team mates in the game. This is unfair as it denies the winning team a win or the "loosing" team a chance to recover.

2) Starting a game that you know will take a number of hours and being unable to complete it - I am not talking about an emergency popping up. I am talking about things like "I'll be back in 30 minutes after I have dinner" 30 minutes into a game, or "I have to go to the shops now". Don't start a game if you cannot see it through (and thereby let someone else play). If you DO start and have to leave, at least surrender so the AI does something to help your team

3) Quitting as soon as you loose you cap ship. I have played a number of games where I lost my first cap, and my second, third etc... and still won. I've won games where I have lost my homeworld. It is a team game so leaving as soon as you get a bloody nose in your first battle does not endear yourself to your team mates

4) Telling people that you are going RA at the start of a game before anyone has scouted the map etc... and then blaming them when you don't make it is not a reflection on their skill level, it is a reflection on yours. You have picked the wrong tactic since you are not isolated enough to be left alone while you tech up.

5) The game is not sim space - if you build a fleet you need to use it. Leaving your allies to be attacked (and possibly defeated) because you don't want to lose part of your fleet is poor form. And what will often happen is their fleet is defeated and then yours is - if you had stood together you would have won. Especially if you are different factions since you get abilities from two factions against the enemy...

Anyway, that is my carthartic rant for the day :D

I agree, especially with your second point about people joining when they know they won't have enough time to play.

let me add "Joining a 2v2 SKILLED game or EXPERT game or GOOD game or ELITE game" when you are new to the game. Obviously the title filters you out of the pool of possible players.

It's amazing how many people never read the titles. My favorite instance of this is when someone joins a game called 4v4 and asks whether the game is for FFA.

I will agree with this. However, I think that the opposite is also true. If a game is just "MAPSIZE - X v X teams" (e.g. large 4v4 or HUGE 5v5) etc..., it is unfair to boot someone who only has a few games as they have a right to play as much aas anyone else. If you are doing a special game, use friends slots and/or passwords.
Also, if you are not going to let someone join a game you are hosting, at least bother to tell them why you are not letting them join - I tried to join a game the other day and I kept getting booted and to this day I don't know if it was because they though I was too good or they wanted the spot for someone else. What made it really confusing is that the host then joined a different game I was joining....

I think they look at what the MAP description is best for, not what the game title actually is.

I agree with the OP.

However he missed a few out

1) Not Communicating with Allies. I know everyone has the right to be silent when playing, but when joining a mp teamgame you should be prepared to type and communicate with Allies.

I really hate those who join teams who cannot be arsed to type and talk to teammates .Sometimes for the whole game your trying to get a response from these people and finally they break the silence with something like "what!" as if it they are offended.

2) Theres also Those who silently quit games . I think alot of the Online sins players arent proper RTS players or those on the "RTS circuit" , so they dont understand that before you quit the game you MUST SAY "gg".
Its RUDE not to say "gg". In every RTS game ive played this is standard etiquette. Its only two letters but its an acknowledgement , like the handshake at the end of a tennis game.

I agree with the OP, and by the looks at the beta version 1.1 changelog some of those issues might not be too big of a stretch for a future patch?

Here's hoping....  :D

I have a new one to add

Pausing the game without bothering to inform other players and get their OK (similar to AFK, except no one can do anything until you return to unpause the game).

Since I only talk in complete sentences I never say that, I'm not even sure what it means. I think its lacking not to bother typing a complete line of thanks after playing with someone for several hours. It only takes 20 seconds.

GG stands for good game. I disagree with your opinion that it's lacking not to type a full line, just because so many other people don't do it. Of course, there's nothing wrong with doing that. Frankly I always type in full sentences, and never use internet lingo/abbreviations. My only exception is typing GG after a good game. :)

"GG" is very standard and also shows up in FPS games. It's the online multiplayer equivalent of shaking hands at the end of a real world sports match.

Bump

Only because over the weekend (in the same game)
1) I was ejected from the game repeatedly without a reason (I incidentally returned to find out why repeatedly until I was told I was an "expert"). There were a number of FU comments from one of the opposite guys with no explanation forthcoming...
2) Had the host just quit with no warning as he and his ally was losing

The main reason for this was THE HOST DID NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THE TITLE OTHER THEN 2v2 SO NO ONE KNEW THEY WANTED A BEGINNERS ONLY GAME...

Hack78, I think that's the general idiocy present in all aspects of the internet including games.

What bugs me is when people that join a game, quit within the first 5 minutes. They are not even being attacked yet. If they knew that they did not really want to play why bother joining?

One game the player right beside me quit like this and I was basically playing against the AI.

Although I have not played online that much, this has occured in most games.

I fear this quitting habit the most. This is basically the culture that plagues Microsoft Hearts online. Because its so anonmynous , people will quit the moment the game starts because their first hand sucks. They just continue to quit games and restart until they join a game where their first hand is decent.

Just want to flash this one up on the forums - we continually have new players, so they should be able to "learn" Sins ettiquette :)

Plus I want my name in neon lights again :)
