Anybody remember Freespace?

It'd be cool if a mod was made about this..

If anybody remembers the old games Descent, Freespace and Freespace 2, it'd be sweet to make a mod about those. As soon as I picked this game up, that was the first thing I thought about and a lot of the gameplay concepts are the same. Besides Freespace being a sim and not an RTS. In my opinion though, Freespace 2 was the best space game of it's time, but was largely un-advertised so not many people knew about it. It had great graphics, very well done gameplay, a interesting story and background, and lots of ships to choose from. It probably is still one of the best space games out there.

Oh yeah loved the game. But my brother scratched the discs, and I find it hard to find replacements.

Freespace and Freespace 2 are two of my favorite games of all time, primarily for the story line. I'm an amateur writer and I appreciate a good story. I think Volition should've got someone to write a full length novel based on it.

Yeah, I got one of the 2,000 copies of the Game of the Year Edition (1,647 if I remember right). It came with the Freespace Editor and some other extra stuff, like noteworthy bonus maps and mods. I think making a mod of Freespace wouldn't be too difficult. You've already got three factions, which you could change to Human, Vasudan, and Shivan. Then there's a boatload of ships (ha?) that can be added, plus brand new fighters, superweapons, and bases. The only problem I think you might run into is finding models. I've never seen a Freespace mod for any other game, and don't know how I'd come up with them, besides making them on my own.

I've never tried to mod this game before, but I have prior modding experience with EaW and BFME, and after taking a look at what the modding tools for this are like I'll see if I can't piece together a team and start on a mod.

by the by, i do recall both freespace games to have gone Open Source, meaning that a fully fan-upgraded version is available for free (legally so, i hope) on the internet.

Yes, the Freespace games are available legally for free. There's even a custom installer that installs FS2 along with several mods and unofficial patches for FS2, and the installer comes with a complete port of Freespace 1 over to the FS2 engine, so its a major win. And, a FS2 mod ws made for Homeworld 2 BTW, it's called FS2: A New Age and I think the maker might let a modder use his models. Oh, and FS2 is getting a mod made for Universe at War so that guy might be able to help you out. Anyways, FS2 is undergoing a revival on the mod scene, and I hope they turn out to be good. FS2 in Sins would make my day though.

well, here's to hoping Derek Smart doesn't get the FS license. Or worse, Uwe Boll.

Freespace was brilliant, its 1 of only 5 games i have ever played right thru to the very end!!!

Would love to see a Freespace mod for Sins

FS2 is open source. Meaning, anyone can use it, they just can't make money off it. So Uwe Bol is SOL when it comes to making a quick buck off an abysmal movie of a good game.

Yup, my friends at Wing Commander: Saga are doing a great job on pushing FS2Open to its limits. Check them out :)

Yeah I have. I downloaded the prologue and it was awesome. Haven't played it in a while but those two guys are just crazy. You know the ones I'm talking about.... Yeah, I know, they're crazy in the most insane, funny way. Who did the voices for those two? Insane asylum people I guess. I don't know how you can say those lines and not laugh!!! Anyways, prologue was great, autopilot was awesome, basically it rocked. Except for that Maniac-wannabe. I'm gonna have to go rescue his ass probably. Urgh. Anyways, finish up the cliffhanger in your next release WC:Saga guys!!! Love it!!!

lol you mean your wingmen that are either yelling for help or busy pwning something?

I've found the voice acting to be very well done, actually. It all sounds believable, not like they're reading a script or something. The AI was pretty intelligent too, it wasn't the best, because it couldn't be, but you could count on them to cover your back for you or distract the enemy when you needed it.

This game is awesome, if you make a mod, that would be SWEET. I love this game, and it'd lend itself well to a mass-battle game like sins; in fact, the concept of jump nodes is extremely similar to that of phase lanes! :D

Only thing I see with this is that there are far too many individual ships, and some with far too many weapons.

In Sins, or Freespace?

I'm fairly confident that you could get Freespace equivalents for every Sins class, and the small craft don't have to be different, just vary the models, so sometimes you get ulysses, myrmidons, ares, etc.

You could always make up your own ships in the style of Freespace, or, if there isn't enough Vasudan stuff for a standalone race, simply cut them as an independent race and put them in with the Terrans.
The Vasudans would have enough stuff for sure, they only have about five separate bomber and fighter classes though and that would be the only real problem as far as balance goes.

Ehhhhh. A whole NTF vs. Vasudans vs. Shivans would be good, except it just doesn't look very good. The GTVA has the Colossus, Hecate, and Hatshepshut as capital classes definitely in-game, however a valid point is do we need to fill up all the slots? The answer is YES! In my opinion, all the FS2 destroyers get moved to Sins capital-class, corvettes and cruisers to Sins cruisers, and fighters and bombers to individual Sins frigates.

After all, what is Freespace 2 without Myrmidons, Erinyes, Hercules Mk. II's, Basilisks, Dragons, and Maras all duking it out to pave the way for the Sekhmets, Medusae, Nephilim and Taurvi to drop their loads? If the devs would get rid of the hardcoded limits on ship build slots, then we could really have some fun with FS2 ships, because FS2 is all about fulfilling your thirst for massive ship battles without having to give George Lucas your money

But as to too many weapons, you are correct. The Myrmidon (when I fly it) has 6 Prometheus S cannons, a slot of Tornadoes, one of Trebuchets, and one of Rockeyes. An Erinyes has 8 Kayser cannons, Tornadoes, and Trebuchets. And your standard Perseus has Harpoons and Tornadoes, plus 4 of whatever is best, Prometheus S or Kaysers. Basically, FS2 has more weapons on a corvette than Sins has on a capital. A Deimos would rip a Kol to shreds, to say nothing of a Hecate.

To make a very long story short, it would be awesome, but lag would ensue as Sins tried to handle all of the beams from your Fenris strike wing hitting the enemy Ravana, not to mention your fighter cover and theirs, all blowing each other to hell. Believe me, I tried it in the Homeworld 2 FS2 mod, and a Hecate vs. a Ravana lagged like hell due to reasons stated above, namely Kaysers, Prometheus, and Shivan lasers all flying around from fighters, plus the cap ship confrontation itself, and the missiles from said fighters as well.
If it was that bad with lag just from those, I wonder what it would look like with ALL those Sathanas like in the game. Wouldn't even be funny.

Search for Freespace, the code got released as freeware and there is a lively community devoted towards improving it. Check it out, their progress is impressive as well as the huge following the series still commands.

Amazing installer; it downloads and installs everything you need to play the game.

Well Sins is a lot better than Homeworld when it comes to resource hogging, meaning it doesn't hog resources. In Sins it might work, although Freespace certainly doesn't lack for weapons and the havoc they tend to cause. If anyone wants to give it a try, I'd love to beta/alpha test for them, me having no modding skills of my own.

What? There's no one who is capable and willing to do a FS2 mod? What has the world come to? The Great War has been lost before it has even begun!!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!! I'm too young to die!!!!!!!

Oh P.S.

I'm also too lazy to mod.
I'd do it myself, it's just I need a team for all the models, skins, textures, and stuff. I can do general coding and direct people easily, but I won't be able to do it alone.

Best Game Ever Award goes to Freespace 2, HANDS DOWN! Yeah, I immediately thought of FS and FS2 upon starting this game. I hope this game is mod-dable, I can't seem to get the right effect from turning a TurboLaser in Star Wars Empire at War into a BFGreen on a Hecate-templated Mon Cal Cruiser. If you could make the Akkan BC into an Orion and the Kol BttleS into a Hecate, you'd be set. I just can't get the hang of it, but I'd LOVE a FreeSpace2 RTS mod.
