to Ironclad: What is your stance/views on the concept of "Offically supportted mods"

Mods are what propel PC games above any other console game/sytem out there. The ability to modify games to your liking, and even expand on what is thought to be missing. eather it be total conversions (for those who want an entirely dfferent experiance ) or those who already love the current experiance..and tweak it a little more to their liking. (Such as those great grpahical enhancements [baliknights]  taking place, perhaps there could be some offical support for that? :D sins loos 100% more awesome )

My question to you I.C. Is weather you plan to offically support player created mods in the future. if you are/were to support mods, why/why not + how would you go about doing it.

For example you could do as little as providing a free website to any serious modders who actually have a valid product. Or perhaps go the way Civilization 4 did ( great game btw!) and actually include finished mods (of course the company added theri own things too) in a expansion pack years down the road.

I'm just curious as to your position on the matter etc etc.

First of all, supporting yes, officially supporting - depends.

We've got to understand here, that if IC would go and choose the mods they support and ones they don't, they would get flamed, rather then praised: How some of the mods are unworthy when others are? I can see the upcoming wars : that's a NO-NO. Though adding mods on their website for download can be a good thing, I would rather see an implemented mod-downloader on that matter. Also there it goes, most of the Total Conversion Mods [ I think even DoW as it is based on a series of books/novels ] would get fined for basically selling licensed material. Remember that even if You give away the content for free... you still do not have a license to do so.

Also I would care to say that currently every mod is officially supported, and the developers are listening and trying to meet everyones expectations. More to that, if they would choose to go and support some of the mods, and leave the rest, that would be one of a serious mistake they would do. What IC can do, is to recognise good mods, by giving the team a badge [ like a quality badge, http://www.process-in-focus.com/images/mb.GIF ]and perhaps some means to contact the dev-team a bit more easily. That's it. Anything more will break the balance, and lead the modding community into chaos. Support everyone, or none. Other then that, there will be mess!

I think the topic says “To Ironclad”, not “To people who think they work at Ironclad and like to pretend they have some authority on the matter.”

Common sense is its own authority.

As a general rule, in the past we've not gone beyond hosting them on the mod library and providing forum stickies, etc. We don't generally provide any special accomodation beyond that due to legal concerns (many mods are based on preexisting IP, and rolling mods into an expansion is just as bad or worse from a legal issues standpoint), and it could also upset others in the community if it looks like we're playing favorites. If you just want hosting and such for a mod site, there are generally community sites who are more than willing to provide that since it will give them an extra draw to their own site.
