Everyone's favorite music?

Everyone's favorite music?

Because there are too many serious threads here :P

Okay, so, time for another lighthearted OT thread since there are plenty of real world/politics ones going on!

I'm pretty crazy about music, I pretty much have to have something playing when I'm near a PC. I love discovering little-known music, and I generally don't get hooked on the pop culture stuff, though some things played on VH1 (US cable "music" channel for any non-US people :P Music in quotes because they just play it in the mornings, the rest is crap!) stick around for a bit.

A lot of really cool music I've found through friends, and a lot through http://pandora.com/ . Pandora is a free online radio station. You do need to register, but it's basically just email/password and I've never gotten a single email from them, spam or otherwise. It's very professional, and basically it creates customized playlists for you. Put in a song name or artist, and it will populate a huge playlist with songs of similar style. You can vote these up or down to help control what it plays, the only limitation is how many songs you can skip per hour. It's awesome for discovering new stuff!

For more control over what I listen to, I use http://www.imeem.com/ . It's not a radio station per se, but it allows users to upload music and then anyone can search and play it. It's also free (and you need to register), and it doubles as a mini social networking site but it's also pretty clean and I never get crap from it. It's very handy for finding specific songs, and you can also create your own playlists. You can always listen to everything you upload, but in some cases if imeem doesn't have a deal with a record company to play a specific song, everyone else will just hear a 30 second sample. These days there are fairly few 30 second samples, and there's a toggle in the playlist controls to just automatically skip these so it's still a pretty good deal. I use imeem every day at work :P

On to the music! Right now, I'm hung up on Maria Mena. She's got a great voice, and very nice tunes. A few examples:

"Blame it on me" : http://www.imeem.com/people/ZG1ajr/music/RvM6z1kE/maria_mena_blame_it_on_me/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=nyRsYWDUu_8
"Just a little bit" : http://www.imeem.com/people/ZG1ajr/music/5gxeYhc9/maria_mena_just_a_little_bit/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=Kwg30yydOiM
"Monday Morning" : http://www.imeem.com/people/ZG1ajr/music/h-WdLMrM/maria_mena_monday_morning/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=abMz7-Q-QyI

I also uploaded her entire discography to Imeem: http://www.imeem.com/people/ZG1ajr/playlist/BRmDcr7S/maria_mena_discography_music_playlist/

I don't usually go for goth bands, but Within Temptation is pretty good.

"Memories" : http://www.imeem.com/people/TWFLyd/music/_qRBbh7C/within_temptation_memories/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=bhzJO34SCoc
"Pale" : http://www.imeem.com/people/P57UBRN/music/K8kyXx-W/within_temptation_pale/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=nNdS8-PEILE

When it comes to pure vocals, Enya and Lisa Gerrard really take the top spots. Lisa Gerrard did a few notable tracks for movies:

"Gortoz A Ran" in Black Hawk Down: http://www.imeem.com/people/ZG1ajr/music/7uXG_U7a/lisa_gerrard_gortoz_a_ran_jattends/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=LMMAQbJeG8E
"The End" in Man on Fire: http://www.imeem.com/people/ZG1ajr/music/cGSPzZR2/lisa_gerrard_the_end/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=Id1bbIrrp5c (fan game vid, but uses the track)
"Now We Are Free" in Gladiator: http://www.imeem.com/foreverandever/music/YhchMrW9/lisa_gerrard_hans_zimmer_now_we_are_free/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=YCw9zo0CAZU

And for Enya..

"China Roses" : http://www.imeem.com/people/ZG1ajr/music/SNjM9SEl/enya_china_roses/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=N8XXcDUrdVk
"Exile" : http://www.imeem.com/people/ZG1ajr/music/fspggUJv/enya_enya_exile/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=2rf5q7rX2Pk
"Book of Days" : http://www.imeem.com/michi/music/jo-8nZI1/enya_book_of_days/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=h2gt4vUIWhE

I also listen to a bit of new age/electronica. Enigma, ES Posthumus, Amethystium, Sleepthief, Delerium.. A few samples:

Sleepthief - Eurydice : http://www.imeem.com/exciter/music/I5d2_pVo/sleepthiefjody_quine_eurydice/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=dKQBxcskN9s
ES Posthumus - Cuzco : http://www.imeem.com/hairdewx/music/NqjNeD0I/es_posthumus_cuzco/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=VaSROqLHXBs (anime vid with the track)
Enigma - Child in Us : http://www.imeem.com/ravagedragon/music/vGdfi36n/enigma_the_child_in_us/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=-rnuBizbXKg
Amethystium - Into the Twilight : http://www.imeem.com/isuda/music/Z_KskGkF/amethystium_into_the_twilight/ (sorry, no youtube link)
Delerium - After All : http://www.imeem.com/dkrech/music/1qOpcq1n/delerium_after_all/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=70YENjZJ3ow
Delerium - Fleeting Instant : http://www.imeem.com/people/FYZpdL/music/cDBOZuen/delerium_fleeting_instant_feat_kirsty_hawkshaw/ or http://youtube.com/watch?v=iVRZhJ2x1S8

That's it for now, though I could link tons more :P Hope at least some of you find something interesting, and share yours!

Mostly enjoy Progressive, Avant garde, and extreme metal. Stuff like Arcturus and Opeth. Some tech death stuff as well like Necrophagist and vital remains. my all time favourite band is DEATH. Though I also love the classic rock stuff of the seventies, old school David bowie and some of the darker styled classical music.

I cannot stand mainstream Radio music or the majority of the stuff on television, its utter rubbish.

Well, a lot of progressive / melodic rock and metal gets play-time in our household - try Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Rhapsody of Fire, Ayreon, Avantasia, Mostly Autumn, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Royal Hunt, Dragonforce for starters.

Also the classic rock and NWOBHM bands from 70's and 80's (and those clearly influenced ny them) still float my boat - try Thunder, Magnum, Maiden, Priest, ACDC, Saxon, Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin etc etc

Anything turned up to "11" is good for me :)

Lost_Wld, impeccable taste.

But when it comes to drone/sludge/post metal, Neurosis is king.

End of story. ;)

thanks for this off topics post OP

Indeed, that was a nice song Here's another one that's very nice listening:

"Turning to Peace" by Paul Schwartz

it was a nice song to listen to

I try to keep my mind open whem it comes to music and listen to all music

I mentioned "genre" mostly because it is a UI thing in iTunes. But Terraziel raises a really good point. A long time ago, I heard one of my favorite picky friends respond to a question along the lines of "What kind of music do you like?" She said "Good stuff," or something equivalent.

Like she said good stuff !!!!

Nasty

About the only thing I can't stand is country and I'm no fan of rap or hip-hop.Amen! I'm 15 and I agree with you on that.

Anyone who doesn't like rap either hasn't listened to the right artists, or is just jumping on the "pomg rap is only about bitches and bullets," bandwagon.

Ghetto Gospel - Tupac

Just like any other genre, there's something to love about it.

99.8 percent of the time I only listen to Prince. The other 0.2 percent I might have some New Age/Celtic in like Enya, Dagda or some such, if I need to relax (which is often)...

I hate to agree, because part of me is conditioned to hate rap and hip-hop, but there's so good stuff out there. Some really good stuff out there.
I like a few hip-hop tracks, but not many by and large. Maybe because I haven't heard them and they're still out there :P The few I like:

DMC - Just Like Me, though admittedly mostly because of Sarah McLachlan's vocals (I would say Sarah is my #1 most favorite artist)
Fort Minor - Where'd you go, again a good combination of female vocals.

And some older songs, notably TLC's "Waterfalls", "Damaged", "No Scrubs", and "Unpretty". There aren't very many male artists I like the voices of, which is true with hip hop also :P

I would say my main dislike of rap/hip hop is that it doesn't really have much flow or melody. That's mostly what I listen to music for and "broken"/discontinuous music doesn't do it for me (see Bjork, or a good deal of Tori Amos though I like "Sleeps with Butterflies" and "A Sorta Fairy Tale").

For anyone looking to broaden their musical horizons, go check out The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust. It'll pretty much change your view of industrial, rap and hip-hop all at once.

It's a freakin' great album.

If you're going to be a music monomaniac, at least you picked a real genius. Bucket of squirrel meat, anyone?

Re rap-related stuff, I have to throw out a few more names: Nathaniel Merriwether, Invisbl Skratch Piklz, Jurassic 5, KRS-One, Groove Armada, Nightmares on Wax, Coldcut, Howie B, and Handsome Boy Modeling School. AFAIK, none of them identify as "rap artists," but their stuff would not be what it is without rap in the world.

I can't say that I am a big fan of rap/hip-hop, generally, but Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back is still one of my favourite albums of all time.

Other favourites include Galaxie 500, Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Velvet Underground, Billy Bragg, Bauhaus, Big Black, Dead Can Dance, The Prids, Mission of Burma, The The, Interpol, David Bowie, Talking Heads, The Smiths, Michael Franti, Massive Attack, Skinny Puppy, Fishbone, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Pogues, This Mortal Coil, The Pixies, The Clash, The Damned, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Tom Waits, The Decembrists, Thomas Dolby, Gary Numan, Atari Teenage Riot, Guided by Voices, Ministry, Ladytron, The Dresden Dolls, Psychic TV, Adam Ant, Orbital, Stereolab, Cocteau Twins, P.J. Harvey, 808 State, Belle & Sebastian, Public Images Ltd., Dead Kennedys, New Fast Automatic Daffodils, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Orb, Sonic Youth, Aphex Twin, Spiritualized, Air, Phil Ochs, and most drum and bass.

Saul Williams can be a little too experimental for my tastes - imo he's very hit or miss. His coop on Blackalicious's Release (2:22) was amazing, as was Talk to Strangers, but I was mostly dissatisfied with that CD in general.

Most think that a 'song' (generic term for a composition) is a single track, and only a single track. This is certainly not true in Classical. Some New Age is multi track meditation, like Crystal Illumination (Chakra Meditation), which is seven tracks and you are to listen to the entire thing in order.
It is very much often true in classical. An overture is, most certainly, a song, and and you could really just call symphonies albums and movements songs.

Never heard of this niggy tardust... sounded pretty good.. I am just wondering... is he any relation to ziggy Stardust? Does he have any Spiders from Mars in his band?

This is also true of a lot of Rock as well..

Genesis: A lamb lies down on broadway comes to mind as well as Rush 2112 (a tribute to Ayn Rand) Most people don't seem to know that 2112 is a operatic tribute to here novel Anthem

I don't listen to much other than TOOL anymore. Any album, any song, Maynard is a fucking genius.

Thanks for the heads up Pony. I had always thought they shared something there, but didn't know just how similar the story was. I actually haven't read Anthem yet, but am getting there. Rush and Rand both genius.

Fun Random Fact, I once fell ASLEEP at an A Perfect Circle gig, though Tool are obviously much less boring.

There's a name you don't hear tossed around much! Sarah Brightman is interesting indeed, she has some very nice songs :P "Harem" and "Beautiful" are two of my favorites.

Secret Garden - Nocturne

Another good one, I have it on my ipod, along with Sleepsong which from memory is by them as well.

Also for those of you who like instrumental, especially with a modern touch, I would highly recommend E.S. Posthumus.

Perhaps their most well known track that a lot of people heard but don't realize is Pompeii, featured in the original Spiderman trailer. But they also have slower tracks, the likes of Ulaid, Cuzco, and Isfahan. They need to make more music!
