MVL Bonus Round

Voluntary Round

Welcome to the start of Season 3 of the MVL.  We are beginning with a voluntary Bonus Round while we take a "break" from the normal routine. It may be best described as a "Free For All". This round will proceed differently from other rounds as follows:

There are no team points available in this round, neither Base Points or Team Points.

All points earned are Individual Points only.  As such, the first 4 submissions will each recieve 1pt.

Score and Speed bonus points will be handed out as normal (4 highest scores and 4 fastest games).

Since this is a voluntary round, each Player that participates will automatically earn 1 bonus point.

This is also the first round that will incorporate GC:Twilight of the Arnor into the MVL. A player may choose to use TA as long as it is a MV game.

FREE FOR ALL (MVL BONUS ROUND)

On a Tiny Map with 9 opponents aiming for a Technological Victory (note that for TA players, an Ascension Victory path will also be accepted).

The Bonus Round will end at 11:59:59PM Forum Time of Saturday, May 31st, 2008

It may be easy to miss but please note that Minors are DISABLED in this game. Also disabled are Super Abilities, Mega Events, Tech Trading, and Tech Stealing.

Thanks SB.

I'm going to try the TA Altarians for this. Guess I won't have worry about the MCC.

11,020, 1 year, Suicidal, Beyond Mortality, DA 1.80g time stamp 5/5/2008 11:54:54 on JustinSane5. Not the best game, but the quickest submission time, so good for 2 bonus points at least. :)

I don't think Twilight is favorable for tech victory personally :(.

Dude! You are just insane! Good work.

You may be right about TA. It'll be just my 2nd game, so I very little experience with it, but the Altarians look pretty sweet.

The problem is that tech victory for the Twilight Altarians is at the end of the Dark Energy tech branch rather than the research tech branch, which means the total number of research points required is much higher. Additionally, they've lost their econ and morale bonuses, and upkeep costs are higher, and starting funds are lower, so money is going to be a lot tighter too. I love Twilight, I just don't think it's a good fit for this round. In other circumstances, the Twilight Altarians can be very strong.

Are you sure? I've already started a TA Altarian game and I think I saw it at the end of the research tech branch. I could be wrong though, I'll check tonight.

Nine opponents on a tiny map... this will definitely be an interesting game!

Ahhh...A tiny map with 9 opponents. Right up my alley.  :)  Actually, I think Wyndstar holds the tiny map record and I hold the small map one. Still, it's a familiar enough one. I'll start a game in a few days.

Didnt put much time or thought into this one. Tech victory is my least favorite, so I just conquered enough planets, and hit end turn about 150 times while I read a book.    I like the 2 bonus points. :D

Seriously, how did I get talked into ANOTHER itsy bitsy map with NO tech trading going for a rush tech victory? Wasn't this combo sadistic enough the first time? And this time no Super Abilities either??

At least the tech speed was VF and not F. I really feel the difference between those two more now.

I would have tried to do this in TA, but for some reason all of my TA metaverse and tournament games are coming up cheat flagged. I'm sure it has to do with all the testing I did before release, but I don't know what I haven't deleted... *sigh*

Good luck!

Nice! :CONGRAT:

I can't figure how to keep from going into the red before the research is done though... any advice?

Advice: Hope Wyndstar answers your question   . Other than that, all I can suggest is that you colonize a few planets and get your population up and do a modest econ building build out before you go into "click end turn 40 times until the victory screen pops up" mode. Make sure to pick up Xeno Entertainment, Xeno economics and Star Republic too if you're having economic trouble. Worked decently for me.

Hope Wyndstar answers your question .

Thanks, but I'm unlikely to reveal the strategy I used while the round is still in progress.

But its not like I got it right the first try. If you check my Random character you will see I played 8 games last night, all tiny tech victories. It took me 7 fails before I got a situation I liked.

Fair enough. Actually, I'd thought you revealing your economic strategy would be more of a threat to my chances for a bonus point than yours, since even if everyone else knew more or less exactly how you'd managed your economy, the chances of 4 different players scoring higher in a 1 year game seemed remote (and I don't believe 0 year is possible personally), while 3 outscoring me is a lot more likely. But I can certainly understand waiting to see what everyone else comes up with independently. That makes the round more interesting too. :)

Oh, and very nice game btw!

Very tough map settings as the Krynn on ToA. Recommend anyone try this set-up. Was a fun yet challenging victory.
