if you would like to see a spectator mode reply to this thread

How killer awesome would it be if you could observe any game in progress?  Find a game, see who's playing, and load it up as you would a replay... except it's live...

I dont think it would have to be anything fancy... same options as replay has (except the fast forward... duhhhhh), and chat disabled for spectators...

Lately, especially when most of the people i usually play with are in game, it would be hella cool to watch their game instead of just idling in lobby...

I'd love one, especially since I had my hopes up before release given the fact that the FAQ on the site incicates that there would be one (and still does).

100% agreement here. Joining in a running game to watch would be so awesome.
Only problem might be the traffic/lag if 100 people try to watch one game. But that could be solved by not updating the observers as much as the players (like ... a lag of a second doesn't matter for observers so their connected can be set to be really, really slow).

Would be great BUT ... you could use it to cheat and give info to one Team. So it would need to be delayed or.. be optional for tourney play.

whoah... i had never actually noticed that in the faq before.

From the Multiplayer section of the FAQ:
Q. What is the maximum number of players allowed within a game?
A. Up to 10 players may be present as participants or observers.

Maybe this means we can expect it for 1.1? I heard 1.1 is supposed to have a massive netcode overhaul

I don't know if the peer-to-peer architecture of the game will allow observers to simply jump in a game that's in progress. Client-server would make this a breeze, but Sins probably won't ever use that model.

i play guild wars its an online rpg for those of you dont know that revolves around competive guild vs guild 8 players a side etc etc any way guild wars introduced a obsever mode and i will give you all this fore warning observer modes make games amazing and kills them at the same time let me elaborate.

obsever mode allows you to view your games or top ladder play games etc to help you get better learn from your mistakes and how to work around them all good things but the auctual latter that observer mode turns into is not how to improve your own personal play but how to improve your play of playing the exact same way the number 1 player in game plays etc and the knock on effect from this is every one starts playing in the same fashion and you will see the rise of the sin Flavour of the month builds and strats more so than what you see now you think sova rushes are bad >.>

so my point is this in theory observer mode works in theory comunism works but we all know how that ended for russia so im opposed to obs mode but dont think its a bad idea for the game just depends on how iron clad implements it so fingers crossed

sorry to double post wont let me edit but also if a observer mode was to ever be implented all the observed games would have to have it least a 15 minute delay time between the observed game and the current on going game because even if you mute text chat doesnt stop voice chat :o

true
you could always impliment a viewer only chat window too.
i was just thinking that if you had like 8-whatever people watching and one person was watching a planet while the others were watching another guy. the first player could have an awesome battle with say the pirates, then the first observer could call all the other players over to watch which you couldn't do if you had the text disabled.

just my thoughts

cheers

I'd love to see that too, but yeah, this could be a problem. The spectator could be on voice comm or using whispers. For serious matches, I suppose that the host would have the option of just not allowing any spectators.

Another issue is whether spectators would also increase the chances of having a minidump and whether spectators could do things to try to make that happen.
