Impulse Download of Twilight Problem

I just got done downloading Twilight of Arnor from Impulse.  It took about 2 hours to do because I also had to download the update for Dark Avatar.  After download was complete I restarted my computer to hopefully make sure that nothing required restart and proceeded to click the Icon for Twilight.

Windows immediatly said can't find file.  So I tried searching for the game myself only to find that the Twilight file doesn't exist in my game file and the Dark Avatar exe also appears to be missing?  Help

Also Stardock Central shows Twilight is up to date and shows a different version for Dark Avatar available.  Thought that maybe something wasn't showing right in Impulse so I looked there too.

One other person reported issues with Impulse messing up DL/DA during the install, so please contact [email protected] about it (If you can't wait, try installing DA+TA via SDC).

I'm downloading via SDC right now. It's still taking awhile.

I installed TA via SDC no problems.

Thought I`d migrate to Impulse.

Impulse reported different file versions for DA and Sins. Upgraded, but nothing was installed.

It also reported that I don`t have TA installed, but I do.

I don`t want to download it again if I can help it.

Any advise ?

Ok i had this problem and it is down to where Impulse installs the files. I found mine in My docs/my games. All you need to do is track down the file (starts with stardock) and move it into the programs file on your main drive. This will return all the files to their correct location and the game will start

How long does this take exactly? I've been downloading at around 600-700kb/s for like forty minutes now.

Edit - Keeps going from 99% - 100% then to 0% and starting from scratch again. Guess I'll try later or something.

Edit- Seems to have worked after i cancelled the update/restarted sdc and tried again

I looked in this file, I had no files in My Docs/My Games/ labled Stardock or anything close to it. Just the normal DA folder with the saved games.

I fiddled with this and came up with a solution. The forum post I made is here.

The culprit is the Dark Avatar registry keys. The structure of them for Dark Avatar has to be exact or else Impulse will attempt to download the whole thing and install it in the wrong location, screwing up your main GalCiv2 folder.

re: #5 I'm having the same problem. Glad to hear canceling and starting over does the trick!

I have been using impulse without a problem. The TA DL went perfectly.

I do have a question re impulse. There are a lot of updates available on impulse that are not on SDC. This includes updates to GCI and GCAP along with updates to some other minor games I have dl on sdc. Are the updates of any value or are they just something to sync with impulse?

Is it worthwhile to run the updates?

For the purposes of not having to traverse Stardock's forums, I'll repost the solution to getting Dark Avatar updated properly in Impulse.

To make sure the 1.80g.103 Dark Avatar update works properly, go to this registry key:

hkey_local_machine\software\stardock\drengin.net\galciv2\darkavatar

Change the "exe" value to "DALaunch.exe"

Change the "Path" value to the FULL location of where Dark Avatar is installed on your PC. For most, I suspect it will be "C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar"

If you do this, then perform the Impulse Dark Avatar update (from 1.80g.102 to 1.80g.103), it will take a split second to update. If you leave the registry hack as I descibe in my post a while ago, Impulse will think it is not installed, download the entire game again, and install it in the main GalCiv2 folder, really screwing things up.

After this, follow CariElf's instructions for uninstalling the beta for Twilight. The uninstall process via Impulse will remove the beta registry keys, so the 1.9 install will go smoothly.

Good luck,

Franco,

Twilight will install properly as long as the beta is uninstalled (or if it was never there). The problem is with Dark Avatar. For some of us the small update from 1.80g.102 to 1.80g.103 screws up because the DA registry key is not correct. This was due to a hack that had to be done to make Impulse recognize Dark Avatar in the first place.

I'm confused. Earlier today, I downloaded TA from SDC. I had followed Cari's advice and uninstalled the beta first and removed its vestiges. I used SDC to make sure everything else was up-to-date. When TA came out, I downloaded it without problem. DA shows up as 1.80g.100 (dated today) with no later update available. TA shows as 1.90.018 (dated today) with no later update available.

I then thought I'd try Impulse. Under Updates, the only thing it's showing is a Dark Avatar update from 1.80g.100 to 1.80g.103 (dated yesterday). Under My Games, it's showing GC2 (installed), DA (needs yesterday's 103 update even though SDC has 100 from today), and TA (available, even though it's installed and I'm playing it).

Do I try to update DA to 103 via Impulse and hope that changes the status of TA to Installed? Or do I go through a similar process to what Hollow Man noted in Reply #10, above?

I downloaded the DA update on impulse and TA without deleting the beta. Both work perfectly as far as I can tell so far. There was no option to uninstall the beta TA on impulse.

If an application only has the zz change in version number xx.yy.zz, then it's considered moot. But I did it anyway, and that's where I discovered the issue.

Franco, how did you install your Dark Avatar to begin with? Mine was done quite a while ago using SDC, and because it was done it that way, the proper registry keys were not in place for Impulse to see it. And that's why I ran into this issue.

All of my games work fine no problems. All updated etc.

SDC reports DL, DA and TA installed fine.

Impulse reports DL, DA but TA is not installed but available.

How can I get around this problem without re-installing via impulse.

Is there a regkey hack ??

Thanks in advance

Darn, no edit.

Basically, follow my reply #10 above, but tailor it for Twilight. The exe is "TALaunch.exe" and the Path will be "C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\Twilight" (or whatever your specific path is).

We have finally found a good solution to this issue.  The latest version of Impulse does not require a registry edit.  Just fire up Impulse, it will tell you it is making a registry change.  Say OK.  Close Impulse and open it again or just mouse over the games that were marked as Available even though they were installed.  They should show up as installed now.

Hmm, Twilight is still shown as available instead of Installed even with updated Impulse. If I tell it to start the download will it recognise if it's installed, or will it install it all over again?
It will likely install it in a different folder than where you currently have it installed.

Obviously this is not desirable. I guess what I'm asking is if Impulse will be fixed so it recognises Twilight as installed without me having to mess in my registry, as a future update may mess it up again.

According to Zargon in reply #19 it has. If it's not working, you may want to sift through posts here (which will help you edit the registry to make sure the EXE and PATH variables are present and pointing to the correct locations.

But it does involve messing w/the registry, so obviously, do so at your own risk.
