Petition to the Admins of JU/WC

Petition:

As we all know, JU is the red-headed step-child (sorry ParaTed!) of Stardock.  It is a money-hungry bastard child that exists on the goodwill of the site owner.

As we also all know, if a JU article is accidentally cross-posted to WC, the hapless JUer is accosted by angry/annoyed WCers.  JUers generally take great pains to avoid accidentally posting an article to WC because the backlash is so notorious.

However, with the new and improved (and yes, it is both new AND improved) JU format, myriads of WC, un-blogging-related posts make their way to the JoeUser forums daily.  Because of this a solid 50% or more articles listed on the forums are technology/WC-related, rather than blogging related.

It is not difficult to dig deeper to find blogging articles, but it is bothersome and annoying.  I propose a petition to have JU/Stardock tech-type-people consider further separating the two so that the bulk of "recent posts" is not comprised of 50% or more skinning/tech posts.

If you feel this is an important issue, and would like to see JoeUser remain a site dedicated to blogging, please leave a comment/signature.

Thanks.

I even use WC and the GalCiv site on a daily basis, but I'd like to see the 'cross-pollenization' cut down a bit. Some is ok, but it has grown exponentially.

When I want WC-related stuff, I go to WinCustomize. When I want GalCiv-related stuff, I go to the GalCiv website. They're both right up there in the bookmarks, with JU safely nestled between the both of them. I like all three, but I wouldn't mind a bit more differentiation.

(Plus there's the strange fact that the JU forums are ALWAYS slower than the other two. I can open the exact same article much faster on either WC or GalCiv than here. Weird.)

There is no seperation between a JU article and a WC article, or any other article. It's all in your head at this point. It doesnt matter what is created where, it's shared and shared alike, so long as one site shares a category with another.

The next JU update will contain code which will not show posts which are created by users who do not have a blog. However, forums are forums and will show everything.

This is the final word on the matter, as I have been instructed.

I can live with picking through them. When I see words that I don't immediately recognize as general English, I usually skip over them.

If we could get a border in there, that'd be cool...so consider this a signature. :)

I actually thought this was about the JUWC...but confused because we don't have admins per se. :P

Hey Brandie, how are ya?

Wow I haven't been on JU for AGES what the frack happened? It's nice that it doesn't take like half an hour to load anymore - I'm not entirely sure about the format though. I kinda liked the old format but maybe I'm just a sentimental fool :)

I don't care so much about the forum cross-poillination (though it does really weaken, not strengthen the site), but seeing dozens of WC and Stardock help posts every day is just another example of the decline in usability since the transition.

There is some confusion over this one.

1.  Forum threads in categories that are shared between sites will not go away.  WC content will show up here as JU content shows up there.  This cross-pollination of posts is intentional and has always worked this way.  This will not be changed regardless of petitions, emails or other complaints.

2.  Currently forum posts are being intermingled with articles in the "Recent Articles" box on the sidebar.  This means random forum threads are flooding off actual articles.  This is something we have on our fix list.  Posts that are designated as articles, regardless of where they come from, will show up in that list, posts made via just the forums, won't.  Forum threads will continue to show in the list of actively discussed topics.

The forum posts in the article lists is an issue that will be addressed in a future site update.

Since petitioning won't mean anything, this is a wasted comment...but since I agree wholeheartedly, let's just call it a show of support for TW, whom I am informed by sources in Texas, is an "OSM" gal.

All I know is that if the cross-pollenization has to occur, I want my metaverse medals along the bottom in JU as well.

Just so I can show off how bad I suck at GalCiv. :P

Why is it such a big problem? I use the 'recent posts' part of the forum and I haven't come across any changes in the way it's worked in several versions of JU. You still get most of the page as JU posts. Sure, there are a few more WC ones these days, but not that many.

If the admins wanted to tweak it all they'd have to do is remove the Wincustomise-specific forums from the JU lists. Even so there aren't many that still appear - OS Customization and Customization Software, Docks and Blinds are some I saw when I had a quick squiz. Do they attract enough JU post interest to justify their inclusion in the JU article category list or are they an oversight? I guess that's probably the only real question. If there are some JUers who are bandits for those categories it doesn't seem fair to black them out just because a few different people don't like it.

Have you cleaned out your cookies, whip? Just a thought.

And as far as you deleting everything and going away, I'd miss you. And I hope that I rate enough that you might drop me an e-mail so we can stay in touch.

Just for the record.

I know my opinion doesn't count, but I agree with Tex and Whip on this.

Just my two cents.

little-whip, if you wish leave the site, please send an email to the 'Contact' address located at the bottom of joeuser.com. You can discuss the matter with the staff.

I'm honestly confused here.  The forum posts have always been cross posted.  Not a single thing changed in this regard between the last JU and this one.

The ONLY thing that changed regarding this is the Recent Articles list on the JU front page and on subsequent blog pages (but not on the forums).  This list currently mixes forum posts with blog posts.  We've said this will change and that the Recent Articles list is going to be returned to the way it was.  I just can't give a date on that since we're a bit swamped with other work at the moment.

Is this what people are having the big issue with?  That specific list?  Because if it's the entirety of the cross-posting issue, then I'm confused what brought it up.  Since, like I said, it hasn't changed in behavior in the entire 5 years the site existed.

When I say certain things are not up for debate/can not be changed based on petitions, complaints etc, it's usually on issues that are fundamental to why the site exists and how we designed it to work.  Cross-posting forum content is a core component to virtually all of our sites.  When we launch or run a site, it is one piece of a larger picture that spans our entire network.  If you only use JoeUser, or only use WinCustomize, you can't see that picture.  You're seeing the trees, but are blind to the forrest.

I know, the response is likely to be "We don't care about the other sites, this is the one we use" but it doesn't exist in isolation, no matter how loudly you want to say it does.

Fact is, we do listen to a lot of feedback, we do take user issues into account.  But not every single aspect of the site is open for argument and debate.  We have a list of fixes, changes and additions for later phases of the site project (yes, it's an ongoing thing) based in part on what we've heard back from users.  The changes aren't immediate, but that's because we have a lot of work to do beyond JoeUser, but they're coming.

Nice to "see" you too mate, I hope you are well. I really must make an effort to start posting surreal stuff again or perhaps even get involved in those political debates I used to enjoy so much!

LW has been complaining about her log in issues for a long time now. Surely someone can help her fix this?

Ock has a new article up this morning that I'd love to comment on, Sodaiho had several in the past few days. But I cannot do so unless/until those show up on the forums. Sodaiho often gets no comments at all on his posts, so they never show up on those other lists.

But blogs with no posts do appear on the forums. That's been fixed for ages now.

Have you tried using a different browser? I can only post articles using Safari, and only comment using Firefox. It's a bit annoying but it works.

I use Firefox with no issues at all.
