I recommend a couple tools for making music

    I recommend two tools to beginners at making music- Fruity Loops Studio and Anvil Studio. Fruity Loops Studio is much, much more complex, but sounds very, very nice, where Anvil Studio is a MIDI music creator, which requires more work to sound real, but is much, much easier to use.

    Anvil Studio is what I use if I want a solid score, I use Fruity Loops Studio to play around with music, partly because of its realistic instrument synthesis. All in all, I don't buy either, simply use the trial version (and Audacity if I wanna export from FL), and enjoy what I can do with my limited musical knowledge.

I do have a piano, and a couple years of playing teaching. It's just more fun to use these, because you get more instruments.

The computer is an instrument...

Regardless, I'd rather have a real instrument. But I can't play a real instrument. I also can't play the computer either, since I am horrible at music.

Maybe I'll check out Anvil. I have Enosoniq Soundscape or something like that, which has a MIDI score creator, but the stuff in my head can't come out easily.

I'd rather have ten thousand instruments than use synths, too, but I only have a piano. And, FL Studio sounds better than most other synths.

If you want to create music, the best tool is your brain.  Programs like fruity loops are just like coloring books.  Someone already drew the picture - you're going to fill in between the lines with colors and call it "creative?"

 

Get piano lessons.  All of you.  Go.  Piano lessons.  Now!  ;)

I can make music with the piano, it's just so much better to use a format you can listen to, as well as having 100+ instruments to choose from.

Most of my music uses only one instrument.

Or one active instrument, I sometimes use background patterns.

I'm not good with the piano...of course I never had lessons. :P I've been playing the saxaphone since 5th grade, though. :)

I did play the saxophone a bit in 5th grade, though.

There are a lot of free digital recording programs.

I've messed around with a few just to see if they are worth the time to download them.

Some are good, some aren't.

Fruit Loops is ok, but there is nothing like being able to play your own instrument and recording something you created.

Lessons are a must, not just buying an instrument and a chord book. Leaning theory, and it's not as terrible as it sounds, is very important in understanding, playing and creating your own music.

If you have a few $ and want a guitar or piano, check out the classified ads in you local news paper. The economy is forcing a lot of folks to sell instruments, cheap.
