Expelled: Is Intelligent Design a Science?

Expelled: Is Intelligent Design a Science?

A discussion of seriousness.

There has been a lot of movement lately to once again start teaching Intelligent Design in schools. Many mainstream educators think that science should be redifined as to what is logical, rather then what is actually true.

The media has played along to this in different forms. One of the forms was the new movie Expelled which show cases quite a few powerful points as to why Intelligent Dsign deserves to be taught in schools. Not only does it bring to light problems with the Theory of Evolution, including such evidence as its contribution to Nazism and Global Warming. This movie also shows that the theoy of Intelligent Desing is completly scientific and that it is only being excluded because it has religious support.

Now several school distrcits, states, and even universities have considered the inclusion of Intelligent Design in the classroom enviornment. This has spiked the concern of many that instead of being taught alongside evolution, it will be taught istead of it.

Religious background aside I wish to know the standpoint of the community. Keep it clean and relatively serious.

sigh... i owe you a case of beer Ironlandx :d if you ever read this hehe

I personally i believe god and the bible was made up so that the church could convince people to do things for them, like giving money and going to war.

zeitgeist movie will explain alot :)

BUT i do like alot of the words in the bible, it does have some wise words to it. Like "you shall not kill" and stuff like that.

If god and satan really does exist, most of will be going to hell since must of us have Sinned :p

What ever people whats to believe, its there choice in life :)

I'm just popping in to reply to the Zeitgeist thing.
Zeitgeist is pretty incomplete and very loaded and biased. It is rife with half-facts and rear-sight to support all the conspiracy theories in it.
But it is a great starting point! You should watch the movie just to have your handy list of stuff to read up on yourself.

I saw that movie. I think it makes some very good points. For one thing, inteligent design isn't necesarily religion trying to make its way into the classroom, or religion at all for that matter.

Hey, Multianna, you make a good point, but i don't agree.I just hope America's society corrects itself, or we will become Communist.

Sorry if my last comment was a little random. It's my first time on the forums. :NOTSURE:

Just wanted to bring attention to what this thread was supposed to discuss. You know, should ID be taught in science class, along with the theory of evolution?

After sixteen (16) pages of ranting, and still not one (1) scientific reason to why ID should be taught in science classes, can we decide on a no?

Probably, the ID supporters seem only able to attack evolution, not support their own arguments; but they say we're stacking the deck requiring them to use reason and provide stuff like empirical evidence and logical arguments.

Intelligent design... Evolution... what does it really matter. All that matters is that we exist, and the last thing we need are prople fighting, maming, and killing each other about things like this.

Why can't we all just get along?

Mag1KaL, What the heck are you talking about!? Have you even read the Bible? And where is your point coming from? I've read the Bible, and God doesn't kill anyone, it's always humanity's faults and their sins that lead to their deaths. If you've read the new testament, God sent his only son, Jesus, to DIE for us. Now, would an "evil death god" do that.

Ok can we just close this topic and stop pointless arguing that won't get anyone anywhere?

Evolution believers: You have nothing to gain from this argument. Obviously the ones "too stupid" to see facts, etc, whether they learn ID as a science or not... will just end up eventually flush of the gene pool due to natural selection without your arguing,so you can rest assured and leave them alone.

ID believers: You have nothing to worry about either. God will somehow guide the "unbelievers" if they are meant to be guided.. whatever the case, all will be settled on the day of judgement. Just do your part,I'm sure it doesn't involve arguing with irreconcilable "unbelievers". take some of your own time and teach your kids about ID, whether they teach it at school or not, nothing's stopping you.

I'll refrain from expressing my own stance as that won't get me anywhere in either case.

Unfortunately, we're keeping these willfully ignorant people alive and helping them procreate with our science, and their "morals" tell them to "go forth and procreate", so we're generally working against natural selection. That and their problem is more societal than genetic, a problem which they are trying to spread to science classrooms... which is the topic of this thread to begin with.

@setarcos

Umm... you don't really know the postulates of the theory of evolution do you??

TGE=basterd. He started this on purpose! Just to watch it spiral out of control and into flames. Notice how he hasn't posted on this thread in for ever. I admire you none the less TGE.

TheGreatEmperor must be truly evil!
Ah, got it! He must be one of those evil Buddhists, trying to start a war between evolutionists and fundamentalists. ;)

My role in this thread is over. That will make most of you think that YOU have won this "debate". Just the opposite, my friends. I am simply shifting my focus from typing to praying for each of you, and to find other ways to plant seeds of truth in the hearts of other skeptics like yourselves.

no need, I'm a devout Haruhiist, which is the only true religion. don't bother summoning death-god for +5 CHA.

p.s. my god can beat up your god

My my, you really ARE extremely ignorant about evolution, aren't you?

Evolutionists have never stated that humans evolved from monkeys, apes, chimpanzees, or any other kind of modern primate.

What they assert is that based on the evidence available, humans and other primates share a common ancestor, neither monkey, nor human, nor chimpanzee, but similar them, if somewhat simpler than them.

And if we evolved from monkeys, then why are there still monkeys around.

Three things to add to this really long discussion:

One: Abiogenesis is possible under certain conditions, including those that (insofar as we are able to determine) existed way back, "shortly" after the earth was formed.

Two: Gaps / "Missing Links" are, in fact, part and parcel of the theory of evolutions more recent iterations. While the slow "perfecting" of forms takes long thousands of years, when environmental change / stressor occurs, evolution occurs on a much more rapid scale measured in years rather than generations. Observers noted that certain birds on isolated Pacific Islands (Galapagos, I believe) exhibited easily measure, rapid shift in beak size depending on the weather cycle. (I don't remember the names, but its El Nino and another phase, one has lots of water the other doesn't) When the dry cycle occurred, the birds average beak size shifted, drastically, towards the larger beaks that could handle the larger seeds, when the wet season occurred, they evolved towards smaller beaks that could get around the abundance of vegetation, and deal with the smaller seeds that were then more prolific.

(And, yes, I've oversimplified the details of the observation here, I'm going on years old memory and the important details are there: evolution was observed in a relatively small time frame, with large macro effects)

Three: I'm reasonably certain the OP was engaging in sarcasm -- his bit about Nazi and Global Warming certainly sounded like it. There are very few people who could say that with a straight face.

It amuses me that this thread seems to be more popular than the movie that inspired it.

But I believe in giant exploding turtles :O I really do!! LOL! Great way to keep it simple and get the point across dude!

You see I didn't start this for any purpose but discussion.
When it did seem that people could not stick to the main topic and would rather prefer to pick apart each other religious views I just left this thread alone.

I don't have the time to pick out the post that are worth responding too and those that are plain false, or lacking... thought.

Still its nice to read peoples views.

If we were intelligently designed, the designer sure did a bad job.

I can sure think of a few design flaws that I would like to fix. I think PMS tops the list this month...
