EasyConvertData ready for trial

This utility will help automate converting Sins Reference Data into binary format.

EasyConvertData is basically a very simple wrapper i made for the
convertdata.exe utility which was generously provided and enhanced
by Ironclad Games.

I built this mainly for people like myself who dont know too much about
scripting stuff into batch processes.  This tool can be used to automate
the converting of Sins of Solar Empire Reference Data into the binary format.

This uses Ironclad's second version the converter utility from the 1.04 patch which ironically enough fixed a couple bugs i was running into with the first version.

Thanks to Ironclad for a brilliant game and excellent support.

Compatibility

~Ver 1 - 1.04 compliant (i think, more testing needed)

Requirements

-.net 2.0 & probably related service packs

Check the readme for more info.

I will take reasonable suggestions on improvements.

Figured i would give a bump to see if there is any interest in extra Sins Mod tools.

I have plans for an entity file editor but if this dies with no interest, that probably will as well.

a program that gives you a choice to pick from certain presets to allow you to mod .entity files easier without guessing what will and wont work would be nice. of course, a program like that would take a LOT of testing. im just tired of guessing what will and wont work in the engine, like the "Has Bombing Levels" part of the .entity file for cap ships, if you were to put it to true, is there any thing else that would need to be added? and if so what? small things like that. preset templates which allow you to do things faster with less mistakes.

As a first version i was thinking something 'simple' to get going. Basically you would have a config file that is a text file containing all the entity entries you want to look for. e.g. DamagePerBank:FRONT

Then you would select 1 or many entity files to edit. Requested entities would be shown in a list with their current value which you can change and resave.

That in itself would be quite a bit of work (and testing), and i made it sound way easier than it will be BUT i think it could help with changing lots of values. I start to go blind after an hour of editing entity files.

Of course if Ironclad has something like this in the works I will wait for the magicians to finish it up. Galaxy Forge looks like it is being built with lots of extras in mind so maybe the final version of that will do all(some) of this stuff.

I dont want to think about editing binary files right now. As a cheap work around i could fit the converter into the new entity editor and put it all behind one button push?

anyway, let me know if you think its a good idea, waste of time, ideas for the app, etc. It would probably take a couple weeks plus testing.

Very cute program.:inlove: But, if i use .entity files from ForgeTools-3 [reference data] and convert, then drop in GameInfo SoSE - game was crashes with Minidump mistake ... What i make wrong ?

zvezdochets, the reference data from the forge tools is for sins 1.15/entrenchment 1.01 only, while the changes between 1.15 & 1.17 are very minor, the changes between entrenchment 1.01 & 1.03 DO CAUSE minidumps/crashes, so I suggest making your own reference files for entrenchment 1.03 and also use the convertdata_entrenchment.exe to do the conversion this should minimise the causes of crashes & minidumps.

hope this helps
