I'm Being Interviewed For Magazines

Over the past couple of weeks I have been contacted by writers for a couple of different magazines, the Financial Times in London and Yarn Forward in who knows where, for interviews about male knitting. I found it quite flattering that they would want to hear from me about the subject and did my best to answer their questions as best I could.

The Financial Times one is a proposed articnle that may or may not actually run in the magazine, but the Yarn Forward one is an article in the works although I don't yet know when it will run.
All in all I found it rather cool.

I am sitting in IA tonight on my way back from Cali. I am so glad to be out of there. I deliver in IL tomorrow morning and should head to the yaard from there to load for home.

Between high winds and snowstorms it's been a rough week for trucks. I've passed no less than a half dozen wrecked trucks between Cali and here. I feel for every one of those drivers, but they should have had enough sense to get off the road during the bad weather. High winds and trucks simply don't mix well.

I've stopped at a couple of taverns along my route, pretty much the same ones I stopped at on my out. It never ceases to surprise me when the bartenders ask about how my knitting projects are coming along. Tonight as soon as I sat down the cute little bartender asked how the alpaca vest is coming along. I was really surprised as I hadn't even taken my knitting out of the backpack yet (that's usually when they remember me). She actually recognized my ugly mug LOL.

The place I stopped at in WY was pretty much the same. The barkeep asked how my vest was coming along right off the bat. I guess a trucker knitting at the bar is unique enough to remember. That's cool though because it's nice to be so far from home and have people recognize you.

I got hit on by a gay guy tonight. Hardly the first time this has happened but he was a persistant asshole and started to piss me off a bit. At one point he said that his friend had cautioned him not to approach me because he thought I looked dangerous. At that point I was starting to get pissed that this guy was so persistant so I told him that his friend was right and it was probably a good idea if he went back and sat down with his friend before something happened that might cause me to go to jail and him to go to the hospital.

Most gay guys are ok with me, you tell them you don't swing that way and they leave you alone. This guy was just a jerk and I was a hair away from beating his ass for pestering me.  I think his friend could tell I was starting to get pissed because he came over and whispered something to the jerk that made him decide to go back to his seat on the other side of the bar. At least his friend was smart even if he wasn't. I found out a few minutes later that he had been accosting just about every male trucker in the place and had come close to getting pounded more than once.

Ah well such is life on the road. Some of it's good, some of it's tragic, and some of it just pisses you off. I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Excellent news about the interviews.  I'd really like to read the articles when the writers are done.  Good for you :)

As for the persistent gay guy, I can only say I sympathise, having been in the same situation once or twice myself.  It sounds to me like the bloke was looking for a beating.

Congrats Mason...that's awesome.

Make sure you let us know what issue the article(s) run so we can get a copy.

I am sure it makes you happy to know the ads on the bottom of the page right now are for free gay guy dating...hahahahaha

Seriously, congrats.  It rocks when someone is recognized for doing something they love.

Thanks. I'm sure I'm not the only one being interviewed, but it's still kinda cool.

Yeah, he'd had a bit too much to drink and was seriously going to get himself into trouble if his friend hadn't finally dragged him out.

Hey Mason--I can type a little now but have been having a hella time logging in, JU has been funky for days and days...BUT...I wanted to let you know I got your scarf on Friday, it's beautiful and soft and the color is perfect and I love the stitching. I also get a kick out of showing it to everyone and telling them a trucker made it for me, lol.Thank you so much, will post a pic of me wearing it someday soon (its supposed to be cold over the next few nights.)Simon got a job that He starts today, (here in Richmond)...not a bad contract either, 2 years at 42K per, plus 10 paid holidays, a week's paid sick leave and a week's paid vacation, plus health insurance.Congrats on the upcoming interviews, have fun with 'em!

I'm glad you like the scarf. I'm surprised it got there so quickly.

Congrats on the job for Simon. I'm sure that's a huge load off both your minds.

 Maybe that jerk should check out some of those ads instead of pestering folks who just want to enjoy a couple of cold ones in peace.

They're print magazines, both based in the UK. I think the FT has an online version (I honestly haven't checked) but the Yarn Forward one is a subscription magazine. I am not even sure where one can buy it but I'm going to check on that with the author of the article.

very cool mason! even cooler that you did not lose your cool with the pset!

I'd like to read those magazine articles as well...it's pretty cool that you are being acknowledged for a beloved hobby. ;)

I hope they at least send you a copy.

I wish I got featured in magazines for what I do more often. Blogging and playing video games don't earn you those many points, though.

Thanks. I didn't mention it but I had a publishing company approach me about writing a book about trucking and knitting but I'm honestly not sure I'd have the time to do that. I'm still mulling it over.

Cool about the magazine. Good thing you didn't hit that guy, he would've had you locked up and sued over a hate crime or something. If he's going after everybody for no reason, that is definitely a guy to watch out for..

Yeah, getting locked up so far from home wouldn't be any fun.
