Earth hour is STUPID.

Earth hour is STUPID.

I use solar powered outside lights, leds for inside lighting, I'm switching to 15 seer and above air conditioners, I turn off my pcs after use, I use only low powered flat panel screens, energy efficient pcs (except for my core 2 duo 8800 monster, I gotta have it man :X), energy efficient appliances, X10 home automation for lights to keep power low, irobot vacuum for lower power use, and programmable theomostats.

My sister drives a car with 36 average mpg.  My mom drives a car with 26, my brother 25.  I drive a 36 mpg car.

Guess what?  Earth hour is a pile of crap.  Your not fixing a problem, your only having a bunch of people with incandescent lighting turn them off.

Here's an idea.  Get more energy efficient stuff.  Then the energy problem won't go for an hour, it'll go for good.

The hate is strong in the last few posts.

Why judge enviornmentalists by Al Gore carrying around a flourescent?

True greenies have moved on to leds. The ones showing off flourescents should be bashed, if they haven't already died from them.

That's my point. Earth hour doesn't fix anything, it just has people turn off their lights for an hour.

Welcome to the liberal world.

The leftists don't do anything to actually solve a problem, they just do things to make each other "feel" good about something, even though it doesn't actually help.

Yeah, buy bikes......Exactly. Don't brag about how you're doing so much good, and everyone else is so horrible for not doing it, if you aren't going to go all the way with it. And out of all this the only other thing I can think is.....What kind of jackass has 30 lights running in his house at all times??

The same type of fools who laugh all the way to the bank as their leds take up far less power then anything  :HOT:  :CONGRAT:

LOL.

The funny part is I'm independant, and I lean republican. I'm betting some of my redneck neighbors consider me liberal though  :SNIFF!:

The guys from stardock are pretty cool. But even you guys gotta admit a problem exists.

The liberals just wanna pretend their solving a problem, the conservatives get mad at them and don't try to fix it.

We need to all shut up and figure out how to fix it  (:(

Eh, I don't really care what wannabe's do. I've done my part, and while I've paid alot this year, next year and the year after I'll have tons more money to buy whatever I want  :)

I'll make sure part of that goes to Galactic Civ 2 and it's expansions ;). As far as your other games........ I dunno :X

It's odd how there are a group of people, in the US anyway, that give more credence to symbolic gestures such as 'talking about doing something' or 'having the right attitude' or 'performing useless attention grabbing acts' than they give to actually doing something about the issues they are trying to feel good about.

Turning your lights off for an hour amounts to nothing more than self-aggrandizing. ;)

See, that is the best attitude to have. I keep hearing "think globally, act locally", but what I see is "demand globally, act as if everyone else should be doing it before I do".

What I have to laugh at is, the times I've been flipped off by lefties in cars while I'm walking. They'll flip me off when I'm wearing some pro righty image on my t-shirt. I can tell they are lefties by all the "save the planet" stickers on their gas guzzlers.

Imagine, greenies burning fossile fuels, flipping me off because I have different political views... but I'm walking and they aren't.

Or when I walk past the Sheboygan Union Hall and see all the foreign made SUVs in the parking lot.

When I stop laughing is when I go out West and see the acres of aspen trees killed by the Dung Beetles that the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and Hollywood hypocrites got the courts to block the government from controlling. Or when I was a wildland firefighter and saw the result of the same hypocrites efforts to block the building of firebreak roads. The same fools who are the first to blame the government when wildland fires go out of control.

I have respect for environmentalists who are truly about reducing pollution and other environmental problems, but from my experiences, the ones who get things done cause far more problems than they help solve. In fact, I doubt they give a flying fig about the environment at all. It's just a pathetic power play.

The real problem is, their 'feel good' agendas almost always make things worse. All this global-warming/climate-change hoax, is really about growing government, and controlling our lives.
Don't think it's a hoax? Give this an objective read. LINK

As far as "Earth Hour" goes......... what a load of nonsense. We turn our lights off for hours, everyday. It's called time to sleep. And none of my lights are incandescent. Not because I'm trying 'save' anything, other than money, and time spent replacing burned out bulbs.

 There you go! We all just need to sleep an hour longer tomorrow night ... and then we can all feel better about ourselves!  ;p

People really need to start thinking long term. One day the sun is going to expand and completely roast the Earth. Life on Earth is dependant on us spreading it to new and young planets, or it won't survive at all. To this end, whatever advances our cvilization should be considered most important, and worth sacrificing one grotty little planet for. We can afford to lose a few species in the short term, because in the long term we'll have (possibly) hundreds of new worlds evolving independantly of each other, creating an infinite variety of species! I say screw the Earth, the stars await!

While I think it's a bullshit farce not quite as big as Live Earth it is getting the message out there.

I always look for people who's ideas piss off both the left and right. It usually means that they are on to something.

My power's going off for three hours tomorrow so, I'll be three times more helpful than the saps who think that one hour did any damn good.

You want to save the world? How about figuring out something that actually works!
End of quote

Well, actually, I do try to do my bit, Ted.

We have a small 4 cylinder car my wife uses to go to work otherwise she would be on public transport for over 2 hours.

I walk and catch buses everywhere, including my job. I've recently got a second hand bicycle that needs some repairs. When completed, I will be riding to work.

We grow as much food as we can and try to ensure any food we buy is 'slow'.

We have energy conservative equipment in our home and turn off everything we can when not using them.

We compost and recycle, reducing our landfill waste.

We conserve water as much as we can and recycle what we can.

Just about all the lights in our home are fluorescent (yes, I know there are arguments about the disposal of these but they do last a heck of a lot longer than normal bulbs).

Now, before anyone else says anything, I'm not a 'greenie', a 'wanker environmentalist' (thanks Jafo) or a liberal. We do this because these measures actually save us money. Yes, that's right,SAVE US MONEY. Given we're don't have a huge disposable income, any savings is good in our books.

Seems the purpose is more to "highlight"...than the energy saving for just an hour......WWW Link

'Earth Hour' encourages governments, companies and homeowners to voluntarily switch off power to non-essential appliances for one hour to illustrate how, by working together, people can make a difference by using less energy, thereby producing fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

I believe San Fran participated......

whether it will make any difference or not...who knows...but suppose it's a step........ :NOTSURE:

ID, not to turn this into a political debate, but the right-wingers don't exactly have the best track record as far as environmentalism is concerned.

I'm not trying to spout political rhetoric here. I vote independent because I think both the left- and right-wingers are pretty much full of sh!t, and are just serving their own self-interests.

You know, you guys who whine about how much good turning your lights off for an hour will do, or how much everybody else is a 'do gooder' or 'greenie' or whatever....go read something and learn about what you're talking about. Then act, do something not just sit and whine and talk crap. If you don't want to do it then don't do jack like you always do anyway. If you want to participate, then do so, and learn to do more. Like Syndneysider and Maso was trying to point out, it doesn't have to be for an hour, but it brings awareness...you do know what that means right? So instead of sticking your noses in the ear, go grow something! LOL and yeah, you can talk trash me all you want...I've got a very thick skin! :d

OK for now we turn it off...
Then a heat wave hits California and they have blackouts becuase they can't keep the electro on no matter what they do. By that I'm saying ya we get 1 hr now - but when it all hits hard they will be cracking it up to stay cool. So what do you do then?

Well maybe if we turn em off now it will work then..? I do not think so!

There is another group of people here on this planet - which has another idea for that.
They call it mortality rate of extinction! By which a large number of said population dies rather quickly. Thus a less of a need for more power and that of said power plants being built to provide such power. Along with the need for more auto's and such the like.

I'm not sure which plan is a good one - or that is works. But if the mortality group gets their way - seems a lot of people will die.

The other way a lot of people will just have to do without power. Or just say a lot of other things which use raw power. Such as cars and air conditioning...

Lights are a great step in some kind of a direction. But really it is a big lie to get you to buy said products to make someone else very rich - so they can have air conditioning!
As for gasoline - ah what they hell - we can grow it as corn and cook our own. But then again that takes a lot of money to get started. Plus it takes a lot of people to want to use it instead of gasoline too. Some countries are regulated to using non-fosil fuels - as to say no oil here! Well that only goes so far too. You still must have oil for any type of motor or engine to run smoothly with.

So in a matter of speaking - where does the lie die at or end. Arabs have made it big for they got it good for oil. They sure don't give a rats ase about this planet either. Just how much money they get for the oil they have that is from what some say is running out!
Ya! sure..!

We all believe everything the scientist are telling us and go by those things too!
What the hell made them so damn smart to figure they knew how to figure this damn stuff out anyway?

It's a plan and just figure it out for yourself who is behind it all! They don't really care - it will happen the way they want to happen no matter what we do or say. Thus I'll figure out what I'll have to do when I have to do it...

But as for saving the planet by cutting down on energy... hahahaaaa! good luck - you are gona need it!!!

SGT ;)

Not sure to whom you are referring...but 'read something' is a little vague.

I learned about environmental sustainability way back when studying Architecture....that was just this side of the Hippy generation, making love not war and protesting Vietnam [or avoiding conscription]....learned ALL about Dioxins....DDT.... and why the fuck we thought it was clever to spray it/them all over IndoChina....and since then knew one particular Aussie who was shat on by USAF dumping Agent Orange...fuckers didn't know the SAS was down there too...not just old women and children.  He died this Millenium....sometimes it takes time.

We are guaranteed to screw our environment simply because it is cheaper to do so.

That WILL NOT change.

Not until those who polute, etc are summarily shot.

I spent my first five years on the planet about 100 miles downwind of Maralinga.  Look it up.

How do I do my bit?  I live on a property that is 192 square meters .... substantially smaller than what goes for 'urban sprawl' - the quarter acre block.  I have no lawn...thus no watering.  All planting is Australian natives...next to no watering.  My car has not been washed in about 3 years. [it's prohibited now].  I'm within a half hour [or so] walk to the CBD ... with 3 different modes of public transport in easy reach [ 5 miutes].  Water consumption is less than half the 'average' of a two person household.

Most [NOT ALL] lights are fluorescent....their manufacturing energy use is more than an incandescent and has chemical issues. NOT all because they still do not work with dimmers....[another conservation method]...and yet incands are going to be legislated out of existence before this is solved.

Small car....1600cc ...average yearly mileage...about 3 or 4 thou. ....hardly representational of those SUV wankers....whose truck suspension [live axles] typically corrugate bitumen surfaces, use more resources to create just to get the rug-rats to pre school...and suck juice like there's no tomorrow....yet get a discounted registration [road tax] because they are not 'cars'.

Urban sprawl is still one of the biggest issues in the Western World.  Everyone wants his piece of dirt...and to keep up with the Joneses that dirt must be at least as big.  Service infrastructure costs shitloads...the lower the density [population] the worse it gets.  And then we're back to tyranny of distance....the bloody car/commute/freeway/traffic jam/roadkill/death and injury. /cost to the community of insurances/Hospitalization/stress/suffering.

There's no need to 'read something' [even War and Peace was boring]....all you need do is engage your brain....

...and go out there and look....;)

I don't observe Earth Hour, but I do like to try save energy when I can. Seen "The Inconvenient Truth"?

I think "Earth Hour is stupid" is a bit harsh...
