Trolls on the internet. Why don't mods in most forums care?

So I had a fight with this idiot who, after fighting with him, I found out he was trolling and had some runs with a scientist.

He told the guy he knew more then him, and this kid is in high school and the scientist is a science major.

So this kid goes and bashes someone for their religious beliefs, I come to the persons rescue, and him and his friends come and bash me.

What makes idiots do this?

Well, because they're trolls, basically. It's just what they do.

yr best bet is to ignore the troll and move on........trolls often spawn on rebuttle, someone taking the bait and or attention.........

your energy is better off spent being part in something creative rather then destructive.

The same thing that would make them do this.

Not trying to be funny, but that's why they have the signs in the zoo, DON'T FEED THE ANIMALS.

Folks who troll the internet are not looking to have an intelligent conversation.  ;)

You gotta figure anyone that looks to pick a fight on the internet has some issues of some sort. C'mon... picking a fight with someone 3000 miles away?

But destructiveness causes things like chaos, rubble, rubbish, annoyance.

So wouldn't that make it "creative"?

But yes people thinking they can "fight" or "bash" or "be attacked" on the internet really need to get back to reality. ;)

I'll play...

Not sure about rescuing someone, I don't suppose the individual was in any real danger from others. I think it's also difficult to wear the mantle of the rescuing knight and then announce surprise that the dragon's threw fire.

Mostly this kind of intervention seems less about altruism and more about seeing some value{s} you personally respect challenged - and feeling driven to do something to affect an environment that you want to continue to feel able to operate in.

That's all cool and all, but it stands to move the question from the way you've posed it Why don't mods in most forums care? to an alternative version, such as why don't mods share the same values and or/aims as you do?

They care here.....and that's all that matters.  The other sites/communities/people/idiots can fend for themselves...;)

The Wincustomize.com Forums were once a pretty nasty place to be.... like so many others.  That's been turned around [mostly].

The rules are:-

1. Respect EVERYONE [old and new].  If you cannot/will not then the door's always open [an admin's/mod's swift boot to the butt is optional].

2. See Rule #1

3. There IS no #3 ...;)

Before there were computers there were smart ass people like you are talking about. They have been around since the dawn of man. Our solution was to kick their ass.

To follow on the above...

But with the advent of computers, internet, and the associated anonymity, these folks have become what I call "desktop warriors." If they ever get to you, rent "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and watch the end. It's every good Netizen's dream come true.

On the other hand... without Trolls, forums would be boring...

Well, just to add my 2p's worth ..I am a Moderator over on the Desktop Sidebar forums , and people who troll, flame and spam are banned immediately .. no warnings .....
Anyone who we SUSPECT of being a potential Spammer etc... will have all his/her posts previewed before
forum members get to see them ... we also run a search on the members' name .. that usually tells us
if the person needs to be watched ..

We also use Whois to do an IP trace, and report the offender/s to the IP , who should effectively deny internet access to them ...

Not foolproof , I know , but as a result of these measures we have cut all nefarious postings down to maybe just a couple per month .. which is not a bad average ...

Trolls are an intergal part of 'net' ecology.... their droppings aid in fertilising the mind and thus provide food for thought.

I mean, what would this place be without Bichur, our resident troll who has a highly fertile mind... not to mention his droppings. :d
