MP connection issue

Possibly a rhetorical question

Right, well me and a friend have been trying to get online and play a game of SoaSE together, but although we both have ICO accounts we don't seem to be able to join each other's games, but those of others are fine.

We get a "Disconnected from server" message if we try - the issue is not firewalls either.

This may seem rhetorical to people here, but I'm looking for an answer if there is any.

Cheers.

EDIT: Also, pings are quite reasonable (125 between users).

The simplest explanation is that the firewalls probably are the issue, be it locally or at a higher level (either of you on a university network?). As that's the typical result if you try to join and the host is not accepting port 6112 TCP traffic as it needs to be.

Well I've opened port 6112 and made sure my firewall isn't causing any issues with blocking it, going so far as to turn it off.

Also, UPnP has been disabled in the modem setup.

I am not on a closed network either, such as a university or workplace.

Please download, read and follow my guide step-by-step and you'll be fine. (I'm finding people are skipping pages/steps and then complaining that things still don't work.....don't do that. :) )

The "Networking and SINS" guide is linked-to from the bottom of the "Technical FAQ"

thanks,

I know, I've tried your guide and although I'm not a retard when it comes to hardware, networking and anything related to connectivity does my head in.

I tried and failed. :/

Okay, maybe I should clarify as to what I don't understand;

My "Network map" looks like this - Internet <- Dlink DSL 502T ADSL Modem/Router <- LAN connection (Home PC). So I'm not understanding the bit about the LAN, unless if you are LABELLING what is my home PC as the "LAN Network".

I've also tried forwarding ports with the 502T's admin page using a guide from portforwarding.com (The guide looks different though). Also, I have trouble getting to understand the static IP (I always though a static IP was assigned through ISP, with Dynamic IP's being assigned in the same fashion, but on an as-per-availability basis.

So where do I start?

Type in 6112, check and see if the Intertubes can see it. If that fails, check the IP you forwarded against vs the internal IP displayed in Start -> Run -> ipconfig (usually 192.168.1.1 but varies depending on router type & manufacturer). If they don't match, then your problem is with the internal IP changing.

As for static IPs, that refers to a static internal IP: essentially, you want your router to open up the port for the same machine every time. You can set this up via MAC addresses too in a lot of routers, which might be easier.

Not to worry, I finally got it running after going to the Dlink Australia site and looking up the router model, then setting up a static IP.

I had this problem, we just bought the game, but I am the host machine, All i did was open up ports 6111-6113, also Type in the IP address for the router (This was on a Linsys Router so it might be a little different but the last 3 digits use those, also don't just put like 192.168.1.1 (have to be be 100, 101, 102 at the end), 192.168.1.101, and 102, 103, 104, just incase.

And if you can Bypass the Router entirely and just use the modem on whoevers network your hosting on. This way you can at least narrow the problem down to the router.
