Have You Updated to Vista SP1?

Microsoft released SP1 for Windows Vista this past week and the reviews seem to be mixed.  Some reviewers say SP1 improves various system performance tests, and others say it does the opposite.  I installed Vista SP1 on my main desktop PC last week, and the installation process was flawless.  As far as any "real world" performance issues, I haven't noticed anything either way.  On my system, I have had no noticeable performance gains or slowdowns as others have reported.

I haven't installed SP1 as of yet on my HP laptop, as the SP1 betas I have used kept constantly BSOD'ing my machine.  I was never able to narrow down the culprit, but I am a bit wary about installing it again on this computer.  I might fire up Windows Update tomorrow morning and give it another go, so we will see how that works out then.

Otherwise, my question to the community is have you, Vista users, updated to SP1 yet?

I just got a dozen updates through auto update...not sure if any were part of SP1. Initially, 4 installed and 8 failed. After checking MS newsgroups, I tried one of the posted fixes and it worked, was able to finish installing all updates. Is SP1 made up of more than one update, and will it say "SP1" in the description?

Bebi and Dog, download the entire SP1 package from the MS site and install it. I have the Conexant audio issue too but after talking to an MS support guy last night, I installed SP1 and everything works fine. the file is named Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0.exe. it is over 400mb in size, tho.

I was researching the whole audio driver issue and installing the standalone version of SP1, and I'd rather do it through Windows Update. Not only because the download is smaller, but it will also show up in the updates section of add/remove programs (apparently). Oddly enough, booted up the lappy and there was a driver update for my audio, but stupid windows update wouldn't give me the driver version information. When doing my research, the new driver (4.37.something) actually broke the audio, I think I'll wait. (See here and here.)

I really dislike the update on Vista, I like it much better on XP where it's done through the actual website/browser and I can pick and choose what I want to install and view all the description and version information (I already said screw it and turned off automatic updates on Vista). Is there a way to access the similar update through Vista?

I didn't update through WU and if I go to Add/Remove Programs and click on View installed updates on the left pane; Service Pack for Microsoft Windows.

I'm able to pick and choose what updates to install on Vista. It's as simple as clicking the option to see what updates there are and selecting or unselecting what updates I want.

Yeah kona I've been doing that as well (since an autoupdate of my video drivers killed the machine when actually watching video). Seems that now we just have to double-click on the update to get the description and info. Still doesn't give exact driver version numbers though, blah.

On another note, man checking for updates is so much faster on Vista than XP, takes like upwards of 5 mins or more to check for updates on my XP machine.  X-( Aggravating.

Yeah I agree checking for updates on XP takes forever.

i did the update to SP1 the first or second day it was released...to be honest it does seem to speed up my system some what.

Yeah they are a bit slow. I usually don't bring it up as it's a sore subject.

I updated to Sp1, the only problem i got was DX pro that didn't work but now thanks to the SD team it's fixed.
Anyhow i noticed a really improvement, PC is more responsive and speed than without it.
I'm happy with SP1 :D

Yea, I don't know why so many people say XP is much faster than Vista. I have Vista and it seems faster than XP. Unfourtantly, I have not and cannot update it to SP1 because of the darn SigmaTel audio drivers. Guess I'll have to wait.

Oh, and a question. Has anyone with SigmaTel audio drivers 6.10.5343.0001 or earlier successfully updated to Vista SP1?

Updated to SP1.

There are 2 sets of games I've had problems w/in Vista.

1. the witcher. ON save it would crash. Otherwise worked perfectly, but couldn't save games. Tried all sorts of fixes. After SP1, works fine. (but it may also have been the new video drivers I updated to at the same time, so can't say for sure that MS gets the credit here).

2. Heroes of Might and Magic V. worked fine in Win2k. Vanilla HommV still works fine (I got the UK edition of that). Expansions, however, force me into the lowest graphics setting for no reason, and look just awful. After SP1 - still no go. Others on the forums have the same prob - no fix. Patiently waiting for disciples 3.

I reformatted my computer and upon reformatting Windows installed the default audio drivers, I ran the windows update and updated all the way to sp1, then installed the sigmatel drivers and haven't had a problem. Everything is working well.

I have updated and I cannot see any difference.

The auto update on Vista is much better than with XP.

I cannot get the flight sim game IL2 Stormovic 1946 to install on Vista.

I updated my PC to SP1 earlier this year, and I couldn't really tell a difference, other than DesktopX stopped working, and some of my other apps were starting to not work properly. And the copying & pasting thing doesn't really seem much faster. The estimated time just updates more frequently so it appears to be quicker. I downgraded back to Vista SP0 earlier this month so I can make some of my apps work again, but others such as Backup, still fail to work, even after the uninstallation.

So my advice is that for older PCs such as mine, either stick with regular Vista, or better yet, downgrade back to XP.

No? At least for me its much better. If I copy a 4GB game ISO from my backup drive to my main hard drive it will go roughly 50-80MB/s, before it wouldn't go over 40mb/s .. thats not exactly nothing to me.

Search around the forums a bit, someone has posted a solution. I just can't recall who.

I have an AMD FX60 PC which has XP, but am leaving that alone for now, its my key beastie for work, I am not yet confident enough on the Vista Build to Risk that.

In fairness the latter may well be a misplaced perception, but it stays that way until I see the whole initial release saga die down, which probably take another year - usually does.

I did update the Laptop to Vista, its a Sony Vaio, pretty much standard for a Vaio, and the update to SP1 just after SP1 was released, did go well with no issues. So full marks there.

The work PC stays as is for now in spite of that. The consequencies for me of that getting screwed up for a week after a nightmare install, are too serious to risk at present. Theory is well and good, I have to suffer real effects whilst the "promoter" disapears over the hill in a cloud of dust .... Nooo thank You, not just yet ...

I can finally say I have updated my Vista rig to SP1...not without issues either. Everything seems to be okay now, except for BitDefender has a firewall driver that SP1 does not like, so it keeps reminding me that it is being blocked.  :NOTSURE:

From Personal experiance and research, Watch out if your running a HP notebook and AMD processor. The only way it would install on my laptop was to do a factory reinstall and do the whole update thing before installing any programs. This was the advice from Microsoft. It seemed to work but when it rebooted I got a message that there was no Operating System. Fried the harddrive. Had to buy a new one and start all over again. The Notebook is only 1 year old so why did the drive quit.So now all is redone with SP1 and everything Seems to be alright, but I'm still holding my breath.
