CCleaner is good, free and light for the CPU...
U can use Spybot Search and Destroy, too, to allow registry modifications or not.

Also, try MemTurbo 4 if you need to defragment the RAM. Works wonders :)

Registry Mechanic is by far the best registry cleaner I've used. Registry Mechanic Link

Diskeeper 2008 is an awesome defragmenter. Defrags on the fly. Better than any other defrager I've tried. It even allows Boot time defragmentation of the paging file and MFT which most sw doesn't even defrag.
Diskeeper 2008 Link

Everybody likes what they like and everybody has their own opinion about which sw works best. These are the two utilities I've been using for a long time.

I use ZA Security Suite for an all in one Firewall, Anti-virus/Anti-Spyware to complete the package.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Cheers, f

seeuhellisoon what fontinalis said about everyone having their favorites or own opinion about which software works is correct.

Usually when I'm looking for a piece of software I check one site that I've come to like, Major Geeks, here's a link WWW Link.

Nice to the point evaluations with download links. If you haven't been there before take some time and look around. Lots of usefull information.  ;)

I have tried a lot of the free stuff like defraggler, cCleaner etc etc and they are reasonable apps but they have nothing on some of the paid stuff. PerfectDisk by Raxco is supposedly the defrag market leader and easily tops a fav poll by members on the techsite Neowin. TuneUp Utilities is also worth considering and has a huge array of programs to keep your machine in tip top condition and they added a disk defragger into their latest 2008 version which is pretty good but not quite as thorough as PerfectDisk.

Both apps have free 30 day trials.

I've had both programs for about nine months now and I would not be without them. My rigs are lean, mean, fighting machines and are so fast and responsive.....all due to these two 'diamond' apps  :)

TuneUp Utilities is also worth considering

I absolutely agree with Leo. Not only does Tuneup Utilities clean your registry, it also has an application which Defragments the registry as well.

So let's say you've installed a Windows Service Pack and your registry has become so bloated, that it has to read from a second page before your system boots. Tuneup Utilities Registry Defrag will condense your registry back to a single page.

I'm not too sure of any other application that can do this type of aggressive maintenance.

One word of advice. Stay away from the "One-Click" Maintenance, instead run the apps independently.

Hope this help;

Cp

Yep, Curtis that Reg Defragger is a brilliant little utility. And when you want to get rid of the clutter the 'free up disk space' utility really covers all the angles including System Restore and unnecesssary backups. There is a tool for everything and I have used them all at one time or another and its 'worth its weight in gold'  :)

Never heard of them nor would I use them.

I'd stick to popular choices because people have tried and tested them and can recommend them. Registry cleaners can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Most of the popular ones have been mentioned by the guys on this thread so take your pick  :)

I would like to try tuneup utilities 2008 but they don't allow you to use it on more than one computer. I have several and I really don't think I need to buy it for each computer, since they are all mine. I will probably still try the free trial just to see.

I like ccleaner BUT I prefer Iobit Smart Defrag to defraggler. More options and faster

TuneUp Utilities 2009 for PC Optimizing and Registry cleaning and PerfectDisk for defrag. But if you are using Vista there's a german program called TVISTA - Tuning Vista (there's a englisch version, too). It''s the best Tuning Programm out there and germany's No.1. (It has a defrag program and registry cleaner). All-In-One!

Download PC Optimizer Pro from Tweaking Tools.

You joined today to resurrect a 16 month old thread so you can push PC Optimizer Pro?? Twice??? <_< <_<

I agree with Lantec. I use Smart Defrag, and the whole Iobit Advanced SystemCare app. It has a junk files remover, regestry cleaner, system optimizer and more. Never caused me a problem and it sets a restore point before it does anything else, so it's safe.  :star:
