Strange Unexplained Crash

I just got this game yesterday, and I've never been able to finish anything because this game keeps crashing on me! I've literally had almost 15 crahses SINCE YESTERDAY!

It seems to be random, Once I clicked the 'start' button and it crashed. It doesnt seem to matter whether the game is 2 hours in or 20 mins in, it just randomly crashes whnever it wants. I was about to attack the enemy with a massive fleet (that attacked other planets before and was fine), they get there and all of my 2 hours of work is gone, game just closes. again, 20 mins in, I get my capital ship and some frigates and go attack a planet... before they even jump, the game crashes. Once I started the game and was about to build something (max 2 mins in), and the game just closes. That is REALLY BOTHERING ME and I'm thinking of getting a refund.

The strange thing is, 80% of the time it doesn't even give me an error message, it just closes. The only other times I got an error message was when it said 'Sins of a Solar empire has stopped working' and thats it.

By the way I have Windows Vista Home Premium - 64bit. PLEASE help or else im getting my money back.

Oh I forgot to mention that I have the 1.03 patch installed, I have the NVidia 8800GT, 4GB of RAM, 3.0Ghz processor ... maybe that will help?

I've been getting a tone of crashes since I bought this game. A lot of diffrent issues one after the other. It is REALLY FRUSTRATING because I love this game so much.

Have you tried all the options in the technical forum stickies?

If you've already exhausted that list:

If you don't have any minidumps in the minidump folder  it sounds like the nvidia driver crash. Try turning off bloom, multisampling and reducing all your texture detail levels to the lowest setting just to see if the crashing is reduced. Then gradually increase them. Nvidia hopes to release a new driver soon so hopefully that helps (if that is infact your particular problem).

Also please send a report of this to [email protected] along with any minidumps, your cd key and your dxdiag info and a zip of your sins gameinfo directory.

I downloaded some update for Vista for computer games (for 64) and I turned off bloom and set everything to 'high' and not 'highest' and it hasn't crashed yet... I was actually able to finish a game today! Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure it's bloom that is crashing it, that's what was doing it for me.

Turned off bloom, but still getting crash. I was in windowed mode this time.. just trying to find something that works here. I'm thinking about poking around in BIOS video settings next.

Ok, I think I may have fixed the problem. I went into my BIOS video settings and change the AGP apature from 8MB to 256MB. I also disabled the autosave feature, but don't think that had any impact on the display crash I was having. FYI, the game was crashing from 5 to 20 minutes of play. I just played almost 2 hours straight without a problem.

Ok, that definitely fixed it. I don't have any problems any more. I've even been getting abusive with the alt-tab... LOL. Works great now! Hope this helps fellow nvidia users.

The only time Sins crashed on me was the first time I ran it. I think my Def Pro firewall was asking for permissions for Sins but I couldn't Alt-Tab to the desktop to give it the OK. After rebooting, now I shut down Def Pro and it runs fine  :CONGRAT:

Bloom helps the game look a bit better graphically.
Havin same prob turning off bloom

What exactly is the problem? Are you experiencing crashes with bloom on? Have you tried it off?
