Can you speed up the building process and etc on Lan or Online with game option?

This game review made me actually buy the software but I heard and saw it somewhere that this game is really really slow paced. So before I play this game, if somebody can tell me if I could change the whole building and income and etc process to speed things up with game option I appreciated.
