And what does dx10 add to the table that merits the extra amounts of work needed to make dx10 versions of the game compatible with dx9 versions?

+ Space games can look marvelous in dx9 already, look at nexus for example.

Polish what is readily available for the bulk of the people.

I have an 8600 GT M0nkey, and I get slideshows when I turn on DX10 in any game. The only Nvidia Cards that can run DX 10 playable are the 8800+ cards.

well for one the 8600 is the bargain bin card, lower clock speed ect. However if you SLI two 8600's those DX10 games will run smooth and look beautiful. I did run a 8600GT and ran crysis on it on high and get 20fps, yes game looked pritty but wasn't playable kick it to med and it ran fine. Now I'm running 9600GSO's in SLI and everything just runs wonderfully (the 9600 is $150 here vs shelling out $600 for the 9800). However this is not the topic of this thread so I will end it here saying that Soase looks fine in DX9. After all its an RTS game you would have to zoom in to see the beauty of the game which already looks good.

DirectX 10 - what for? And no, it's not better just because it has a higher version count.

Some games manage to do it well (look at World in Conflict DX9 vs DX10). Others sort of well (Crysis DX9 vs DX10, but the performance takes a huge hit unlike WiC).

Others just fail miserably (Hellgate DX9 vs DX10).

It's all in how much effort the developers put in it. DX10 does have the ability to make a noticeable difference in the 'oooh, purdy' factor.
