Newbie: Max Number of Ships?

Hello,

I'm playing the small 1v1 single-player map against the AI (easy).  I have no problem building a working economy, fending off the pirates and up-modding my military/civ to high levels.  Then...I ran into a problem.

I met my enemy a few times (scattered ships) that I easily destroyed, but then I discovered their homeworld.  Lots and lots (and lots) of ships that then came after me.  At least 3 huge fleets--each with several large ships and dozens of frigates.  My problem is that in comparison to this onslaught my maximum build limitation seemed puny indeed.  I could only build at most 1 capital ship, maybe 4 or 5 heavy cruisers, and a couple of frigates.  All of my ships together would get torn to shreds by just one of the enemy's fleet--let alone the other two fleets rolling unopposed through my empire.

How is it the enemy seems to have such a high limit on their number of ships and I'm so constrained?  Is there a way to grow this limit during game play?

Another question--I managed to defeat the pirates.  I destroyed their ships through repeated waves of attacks then pounded their homeworld to death.  But then I couldn't colonize it--hostile culture it said.  But soon after my AI enemy colonized this rock, seeminly without trouble.  How did they do that?  Is it possible for me to colonize the pirate world?

Thanks!

pirates don't have any culture, so the hostile culture at the pirate world was the AI's, which means it wouldn't have given him any trouble colonizing it at all.

did you research your fleet caps and capital ship crews up? it sounds like you're still limited to the 100 fleet supply and 1 cap ship crew you start with, if you don't research the higher levels of fleet logistics, you are going to get overwhelmed, because you won't have any ships to speak of, compared to your opponents.

Yes, that was it! Nothing like facing down an invasion force with my little handful of ships.

With so much to learn about this game, I also didn't know about that area where you build up your commanders and fleet caps. I must have played 4 or 5 games before I realized something was wrong and I came here to get some info. Now I'm building 3 to 4 Cap ships of varing capabilities, adding lots of diverse frigates, and I'm learning to add a few Cruisers with air wings. The air wings are great support for me so far and do lots of support. They are also really cool to see all those little fighters running around when you zoom in.

I've been building up 1 to 2 Cap ships for raiding and keeping the opponant off balance, taking out his/her colonies. I use one Cap ship for defense, and support, usually in a bottle neck area so I can move him/her quickly. As you expand, build your frigate factory on an outlying planet of yours. I was building too much from my homeworld and having them jump. It takes to long to get them into action.

I hate the pirates so far and havent quite figured out a good strategy for dealing with them. I realize you need to keep the bounty up for the other players.

I've learned to go to the black market and see excess metal or crystal to get quick cash. This has been a great way to build quick frigates or get some quick research.

Yeah, not knowing about the logistics cap is a bit of a biggie. I think they teach you how to increase your ship cap in the tutorial, so you should play it again and pay closer attention.

But, be careful, the cap upgrades also permanently decrease your income of credits, metal, and crystal on all planets, reguarless of how many ships you have running around. Buy the logistic increases too fast/early, and you'll be too broke to buy other stuff, including more ships. . .
