A Check List For Nights...

So, I start my midnight shift tonight. Thought I'd share my list of things I'm bringing.


  • The Toronto Star. I'm not much into reading the paper. I usually get my news at their site, or catch the headlines on TV. I figured I'm in for a boring night so the Saturday paper was a good place to start filling some of it up.

  • Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. After reading Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix I realized that I wasn't paying too much attention to certain characters.

  • My lunch. I never, ever bring lunch to work. There's a chinese food place down the street that sells half orders of rice and mixed vegetables for 1.99. Throw in a can of pop and it somehow works out to be $2.50. The lazy in me hates the idea of making lunch every shift now, but I have no choice. There is no such thing as 24 hour in my hometown.

  • I've gotten a lot of jokes about it, but I've got a handheld computer game called Pocket Poker that I'm bringing along.

  • My bloody coat. I know they are going to have the aircon just cranked.

  • My coffee mug. Someone says that the company is serving coffee on our new floor. I'm bringing my 2L waterbottle, but I'm bringing the mug for backup.

  • My notebook. Soon to be filled with "Midnite Writing". Cheesy? Yeah, but I might as well try to write a story or two while I'm there.

  • Something I should bring? A tape recorder. I bet a lot of hot gossip gets passed tonight. And no, I'm not above it at all.

Enjoy your night shift as much as you can. Don't know if you have problems staying up all night (especially night after night for an extended time frame) but, I've found a number of ways to help myself stay up at night and I have my own checklist now. It usually includes a new magazine of some sort in addition to a book. Sometimes, if I can't focus on a book, I can usually get through an article or two. Also, I like Skittles. I've found that eating them one Skittle at a time helps me stay awake. Lastly, and you've already got this one, liquids. I've found very few things help me stay awake as much as running to the men's room every 40-50 minutes.
