Specialized fleets/task forces

The more I learn about the game, the more I am amazed at its depth--and the more I realized how poorly I've been playing.

For example, I never realized that the little Arcova Scout Frigates could be used as a spec ops force to plant  fairly powerful time bombs on an enemy structure, and then quickly leave--even if the enemy has a phase jump inhibitor. Of course you have to perform the appropriate research to allow the Arcovas this feature.  According to one of the amazing spreadsheet analyses of ship features and damage that another player (Zyrxil) has produced https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/?forumid=404&aid=177682 , I understand that the time bomb is worth a whopping 1200 points of damage!  A task force of three or four of these fast little craft could wreak havoc behind the enemy lines.   Has anyone ever tried using a force of Arcovas in this manner?

I'm new too, and I think I'll have to try this out. It seems perfectly feasible to me, and it would likely be a nice precursor to a larger invasion...or simply a distraction intended to keep your enemies chasing your Arcovas to one end of their empire while your mass your fleet at the other.

The most sophisticated "task force" tactic that I've seen the AI use is really nothing more than an obnoxious, if effective, delay tactic. When you launch your main fleet away from a planet, they'll send in small groups of Purge bombers, or what have you, and cause all sorts of annoyances behind your lines. If you're playing on a map with long phase lines, this can be particularly annoying, as your response time will be greatly slowed.

But I have yet to see the AI use a small task force of Arcovas. Sounds feasible to me, although later on in the game it would be easily countered, assuming your enemy had a healthy economy. As I said, a nice precursor to an assault, or an effective distraction. Sounds viable to me.

a lot of strategy is currently emergant, basically any imaginable combination of ships designed to do a specific job can do it rather well if your enemy is unprepared.

this creates a fundamental underlying theme to sins: understand your enemy and think creatively to counter his defensive setup.
